Why isn't Justine playing? With Kim it's understandable - she has points to defend and the shoulder injury - but Justine has no excuse... Belgium are going to lose horribly to Italy without her.

Elke must be there as a doubles player - she's done so much better in doubles than singles recently. Laurence is there for doubles too, so they'll be the doubles team. Leaving Callens as the main singles player, and possibly Elke & Caroline playing one singles match each?

Justine wants to play a full American hard-court season and FED-cup doesn't fit in her planning. She said it to the coach in the beginning of the season (as did Kim), and he was okay with it.

Personally I think it's a shame, but it's understandable.

The Crow - I don't agree. Justine is scheduled to play 6 hardcourt events this year. It's her worst surface and the most punishing physically - so why is she overplaying on it? I don't think it's the best decision for her, even not looking at the Fed Cup issue.

The Crow

The "understandable" was about not playing FEDcup, saki. She just wants perform good in the hardcourt season and on the us open and FEDcup doesn't fit...

About her overplaying, maybe you're right (but that's a whole other issue), but I hope she and her coach know best ;)

It's a good decision from Justine.

She has no points to defend. She has the right to get points like other top players do (Kim etc).

It would be bad playing on clay again. The clay season is already over.

The only one who is to blame here is the WTA. They have to learn to make a better shedule.

Good decision Justine. She kept us in the world group this year. So thank you.

The difference between Kim and Justine is that Kim has points to defend!!!! Justine hasn't!!!!!!

I think Ivo would have better to ask to Daphne Van De Zande to come instead of Caroline!!

Daphne played great in Brussels she lost in three sets to Virginia Ruano Pascual, so it's a great result!!

So ? Justine can't play a new tournament then, to gain points ?

It's her decision.. so respect it.
I completely understand she doesn't want to play on gravel at this moment, that would be a stupid thing to do. She can win a lot of points the coming weeks...

The Crow - what I meant was that I don't think it's an understandable tennis decision from Justine. If she wants the match play she'd be better off playing Fed Cup; if she wants the points, she'd be better off not playing so many hardcourt tournis. I have a horrible feeling that she'll injure herself halfway through the hardcourt season & miss out on the U.S.Open big points.

Yes she can, but I think as she isn't injured and es she has no points to defend until the 12th August, she can do it for Belgium!!!
Kim did it in 2000!!!! Sabine and Domi decided not to play and Kim did it!!! now, she can't due to her Stanford title and her injury.

La Deux zendt de Fed Cup matchen uit, das al wat ik weet :)

Come-on-kim, Daphne isn't a team player so maybe that's why Ivo's picked Caroline. And btw, Caroline's doing very well this year! She deserves this place in the Fed Cup team!

Come-on-Kim, I don't understand what defending a title has to do with anything?? If you think it's understandable that Kim's not playing Fed-cup, then the same goes for Justine! Why does Kim gets the excuse that she wants to gain points (cause that's basically what's it about) and Justine can't??

Saki, I agree with you. I also think she's playing a bit too much. But, I hope she and her coach know her body better than we do ;) And playing FED-cup, well since it's played on clay, I think it's an understandable decision. Again I myself do not like her decision (and Kim's for that matter) not to play Fed-cup, but they are the boss.

So what?

Justine also played for Fedcup when Appelmans and Clijsters didn't play. Together with Domi they swept Holland with 5-0 and so give us a place in the world group. If they didn't we wouldn't have the result in 2000 because we won't have been in that world group.

So, why was she a player engaged against Australia?

She said in La DerniŔre Heure, that she'd love to play for Belgium and that she thinks she can still beat some good players on clay. She said, she hoped to speak with Iva at Brussels

I understand, but :

*) Kim won't gain points, that's for sure!!!
*) I think that Justine could have done it, but she didn't choose to do it, so I respect it, but I think it's sad because if one of them (either Kim or Justine) would have play, Belgium would have another chance to win it (without the USA in quaterfinals!!) and I thought that between Kim and Justine the one who has the most "excuse" is Kim, so that's why I can understand better her choose, but I still understand Justine choose only because of the fact that Fed Cup is played on clay!!!
BTW, I think that Justine puts to much pressure on herself!! Like when she said that if Kim wouldn't have played Fed Cup against Australia, she wouldn't have played too!!!
What she must know is that if Belgium lose while she is in the team, we won't tell : "We lost because of JUSTINE!!" NO!!!!! If we lost it's because our players weren't as good as the other nation's player on THAT day!

The Crow

You're right, that if 1 of them had played our chances would have been much (and I mean MUCH!) better. But timing of this round of FED-cup is very bad, especially since it is in Europe and on clay...

Oh well, they made their choice and Ivo seems to be okay with it :)

Could someone explain the points situation to me? Why does Kim have points to defend and Justine hasn't?

Come-on-kim
Jul 16th, 2002, 08:40 PM
Yes, and I'm feared for next year, because they want to put it before the Grand Slam, so... most of the Top player will want to take rest before Grand Slam!!!

But the question is, why don't they do like the Davis Cup?? but the girls are too competitive, so they don't want not to play a WTA event the week after due to Fed Cup. Boys are more involved in Davis Cup than Girls in Fed Cup!!!

And about this Fed Cup, what makes me mad, is that now, the French are the favourite (I love the French, but I don't like them when they win something because....)

Well it's easy, Kim won Stanford last year so she has lots of points to defend and Justine didn't play so she doesn't have any points to defend
