Andrew,
Read what I said. "In-shape" Serena. When Nadia beat Serena @ Amelia, Serena was obviously limping from almost having broken her ankle.

Listen, I'm the wrong person to try to get into a petty argument with this evening regarding players. Nadia's game is limited because her forehand is mediocre, and she is clearly a basketcase in the mental department. There. . . I said it. She is talented, but she's not in the upper echelon of the tennis players and not a threat to win a Slam - ever.

An in-form Serena, however, is.

Let's not make this discussion between us uglier than it already is.

If there is a rain delay on outer courts, why is there continuing play on Rod Laver?

BTW, to correct, I think, Pureracket, Petrova has the ammunition to beat any player on tour today. If you are talking about mental ammunition, well that's a work in progress. I think she's gotten a bit better, mentally, since she's won her first tourney.

That was her match against Silvia in 2005. In 2004, she allegedly hurt her knee.

If anyone's game is limited right now, it's Serena's. You can talk about "in-form" Serena all you want, but she's not here right now. She's not even close to that, and neither I nor you know if she'll ever be there again. You have to look at her as she is right now - a pretty average, out of shape player.

Nadia can win a slam, when she won all those clay tournaments last year including beating Justine, she got injured and missed the French and Wimbeldon Open.....About Serena, if (the match is not over) she loses it might be a good thing, Oracene said that she did'nt want Serena to win like she did in 05 where she muscled her way to the win, she needs to know that she has to play more and lose sometimes in order to get back on top.If that happens we all win because we get to see her play a full year.

I think one of Petrova's difficulties is that she has a tendency to lose concentration. I've noticed it before and she's done it again at the beginning of this second set. She had a good gameplan - move Serena around, get to net if possible - and she was executing it and then she just let up and got herself down in the second set.

One thing I will say, for whomever wins, the commentators have a point about Serena being almost a part-time player, and that it is not acceptable for a tennis player. I'm not saying that she has to play 30 tourneys, but 12 in the course of 11 months? Come on, this isn't a winning strategy for getting far into tourneys.

It would be different if Serena was actually winning or challenging for a majority of tourneys but when you've been hurt, and now you are back as any one will tell you, what you need are matches.

Oh btw, that is now 5 straight games for Petrova.

For some reason I'm not sad at all about her losing. It wouldn't do her any good to scrape through matches to win another title. Serena is better than that and she needs to lose in order to improve this year. Realistically, if she even plays one tournament a month, trains and loses the weight by the US Open she should be back. LOl@ Petrova. She can't handle the pressure. dfs and errors. Can't believe we're in a 3rd set. Can Nads come out on top, or will Serena blast herself to victory? but Nads has to win, afterall she is AO 2007 champion.lol

I'm not even really a Nadia fan but I hope she sorts her head out - it's just sad to see a player of her talent throw away a set she should have won with a double fault.

vejh

And you can bet your last dollar that Petrova is steaming over that too (throwing away the 2nd). And that was all because of fear of Serena (well not really, she does this ALOT), correction, that was the Petrova way. She's gotta walk her talk. Let's see how long before she gets over it, or she may never get over it for the remainder of this match.

I don't think Nadia does get scared/nervous precisely, I think she just lacks the ability (that Maria and Justine have in spades) of playing one point at a time. She seems to lose her concentration at times and then rush at other times. And then she gets stuck in a negative loop - she's annoyed with herself for losing concentration so she's even less focussed so she's gets annoyed with herself all the more.. etc.

But I still think she has a chance of pulling this out.

Hey, they moved this thread from the GM, why??

If she can pull this out then good for her because that was a bad giveaway in the 2nd. And she definitely got nervous at the prospect of closing it out in the 2nd. It takes a strong mind to leave the past in the past within a tennis match.

To be fair, this has not been because Serena was the better player, it has been because Nadia has handed it to her. If Nadia wasn't a headcase, this match would have been over some time ago.
