WATSONS WATER CHAMPIONS CHALLENGE (Hong Kong; outdoor hard; exhibition)
================================= http://www.watsonswaterchallenge.com/ (http://www.watsonswaterchallenge.com/)

(Transworld Sport may be televised in other countries, but the details in this message are specific to the UK.)

There are five points from the Hong Kong final between Maria Sharapova and Kim Clijsters in this week's Transworld Sport, which is repeated with sign-language at 05:20 GMT on {Wednesday night/Thursday morning} on Channel 4.

The tennis was 19 minutes into Sunday's broadcast of Transworld Sport, so I recommend 05:33 as a safe start-time for timer-record (the repeat is 10 minutes shorter than the original broadcast due to shorter adverts), and 05:47 as a safe stop-time (the tennis lasts 3 minutes, and Transworld Sport has been known to start up to 5 minutes late).

The points they showed:

* First set, Clijsters serving: A wide serve forced Maria outside the tramlines to hit a short forehand return; Clijsters hit an off-backhand winner back behind Maria.

* First set, Maria serving: Maria hit a good wide serve, but a deep, penetrating forehand return down the middle forced Maria to hit a short backhand; Clijsters took the initiative with a deep crosscourt forehand, forcing Maria to hit a defensive forehand lob that sat up nicely for Clijsters to nail a forehand winner down the line.

Bruce Hammal: "Clijsters proves the stronger in the early exchanges, as both players show some excellent early-season form."

* First set, Clijsters serving 5-3 (set-point): Ace out wide, right in the corner.

Bruce Hammal: "In the second, Sharapova shows her fighting-qualities, as she ups her game to take the set into a tiebreak."

* Second set, Clijsters serving: She hit a deep serve right into the hitting-zone of Maria, who could have done more with a backhand return; Clijsters hit a deep backhand; Maria hit a penetrating backhand down the line; forcing Clijsters to do the splits and hit a short forehand; Maria hit a forehand down the line, forcing Clijsters to stretch low & wide for a defensive backhand lob; Maria hit a forehand drive-volley winner down the line - back behind Clijsters.

Bruce Hammal: "But Clijsters recovers from 1/4 down in the breaker to seal an impressive straight-sets victory."

* Second set, Clijsters serving 6-6 (9/8): A pinpoint serve down the middle forced Maria to stretch wide and hit a short forehand return; Clijsters came to the net behind a penetrating crosscourt forehand just inside the sideline; Maria hit a dipping crosscourt forehand at Clijsters' feet, but Clijsters hit a forehand drop-volley winner from below the height of the net. Clijsters won 6-3 7-6 (10/8).

Maria was holding the smaller trophy, but wearing the lovelier smile! :hearts:

Bruce Hammal: "She and Sharapova will both now head to Melbourne confident of winning a first Australian Open title."
