IN THE SWING: Jessica Moore, 16, with parents Sharon and Peter.

WA schoolgirl Jessica Moore says she will "keep swinging" after drawing third seed Svetlana Kuznetsova in the first round of the Australian Open.
Moore, a 16-year-old wildcard, giggled when the draw pitted her against the former US Open champion, possibly in a showcase match on Rod Laver Arena.

Tennis Australia player development director Craig Tiley predicted that Moore, ranked No. 992, would justify her wildcard under TA's policy of rewarding youth for their performances on the Australian summer circuit.

Moore was given her Grand Slam spurs after winning the Australian 18-and-under title last month and being runner-up to Alicia Molik in the final of the Open wildcard playoff series.

"She (Kuznetsova) is a gutsy player who has won a Grand Slam and won a Grand Slam doubles with Alicia. I'm excited to see how I play and I'll focus on me," Moore said.

"I'm getting used to the limelight a little. I used to be nervous about the whole thing, but I hope I can deal with it well on the day. I'll go out and keep swinging.

"The biggest crowd I've played in front of was probably in Hobart, where there were maybe 1000 at most. You have to start somewhere."

"I want to do the last two years at school. Schooling is a big part of my life and tennis isn't the only thing."

Tiley said: "Jessica's played all the junior Grand Slams last year and done well. She won the under-18s nationals and lost a close match to Alicia in the final of the wildcard playoff. We believe she deserves the opportunity."

These Australian papers are interesting. I can't find an article about the #3 seed, but her opponent gets an article.

Is it going to be like a Davis Cup crowd?
Sveta might still be sick from last week, and the crowd might be cheering her df's.

i think the crowd will be cheering for jess but i'm sure they'll show some respect for sveta & i don't think it would be like a davis cup crowd or that crowd in the sydney final. us aussies can be biased, but were also layed back.

might not be enough to cheer bout cause sveta might/could win easily.

No i wouldn't think so, i don't think the aussie cheer squads will go to this match but i might be wrong, they aren't that bad anyway.

AO people are quite nice, from what I recalled. So I'd be surprised to hear people cheering on stuff. Maybe 1 or 2, but I hope no one does such thing

That's good to know, because Kim took a lot of nonsense from the Sydney crowd.

Surprised that such low ranked Americans get WC's in Oz. For example, Patty Plays (16 y.o.) #497 Madison Brengle in the round of 128.

WA in the article stands for Western Australia, not Washington state.

I think if Sveta is healthy, she can make a huge run with this draw.
So this is the right first opponent.

sveta will defintiely reach the quarters & the only players that may block her path to the semis are nadia & jelena i have to say. but i hope jess can play a good match against sveta.

The only match I'm even remotely concerned about up until the quarters is potentially Tulyaganova. She's got a lot of ability, and is someone anyone should take seriously.

What you talk about? Madison Brengle is an American player! :p She also won the wildcard play-offs with fellow American players.

Something tells me this girl will be good

Not really sure why, but I also have a feeling she will give Sveta a very tough match

isn't it natural to have articles about Australian players in australian newspapers for the Australian Open

maybe I am not looking at the big picture but it is expected thing ;)

Interesting? I'd call it normal. Moore is an Australian, the target market for Australian newspapers is obviously the Australian public, of course they will write about Moore who is the national u-18 champion. Kuznetsova is the number 3 seed but doesn't have as high a profile in Australia as seeds below her, ie Hingis, Kim. They are going to write about who there is a demand for, look at the media attention on Hewitt. He definitely isn't getting the attention because he is one of the main contenders, he is getting it cause he is Australian.
