it is quite common for top player to practise together before tournaments.

hingis usually plays with henin, i remember henin saying she was shocked when hingis actually even toss a coin for practise matches.

What a better way to scout your opponent than to practice with her.
Martina has it made.
NOt a smart move for Maria to agree to a pratice session with a student of
the game like Martina

It's definately weird.
They practiced with each other a little in the summer of 2005.
The first time they meet on tour, Martina crushes Sharapova at Tokyo.

You would think Sharapova would learn but at the same time she's a different player now.

FFS, when will this stop ? Maria Sharapova isn't as bad as you think ! She has a personnality, I admit but always pretending she's a bad person, it annoys me the hell out.

Maria Sharapova couldn't find a better partner

Martina has known about Maria ever since Maria was like 12... they hit up against each other then. Martina is the smartest player ever, if anything this would be a seemingly bad move for Sharapova, but alot happens in two weeks... form changes etc.

And what? Maria is a complete dumbass? Martina is a great tactitioner (if that's even a word) but Maria is not stupid, both of these girls would benefit from this, and if they weren't going to, then they would hit with their practice partners instead. Besides, maybe they just wanna have some fun, Maria isn't a snob and Martina isn't either, they both seem to be considered outcasts on the tour, maybe this might be the start of a wonderful friendship... or maybe they are just hitting up

Mark for Martina
Jan 13th, 2007, 10:40 AM
I think the now older Martina is quite popular among her peers in the tour. She seems to be ok with all of them (Kim, Justine, Svetlana, even Amelie I believe). I remember hearing a commentator last year that when Martina was on top, she was very amicable with everybody in the locker room. Maria and Martina are intrigued with each other, I think. They seem too see part of themselves in each other.

(The 2 most popular players practicing together? A photographer's dream! The WTA might have plotted this press spectacle... hehehehe...)

I saw her yesterday training with Patty, which was no shock. However, they trained on Show Court 3 which was a shock, I would have thought Martina would have wanted to train on a better court, considering she wont be playing any matches on an outside court like court 3

A nice doubles team maybe? 2 Different styles helping each other out, Maria has little experience in doubles but has played and won with Kirilenko, we all know about Hingis' experience. I think they could make a good team. I have wanted to see Maria take doubles seriously and my top choice for her to progress with that would be Martina.

Very nice to see!! :D I think Maria rarely practices and hits with other girls especially now and in recent years but this doesn't surprise me. She seems to get on well with and like Martina. And as opposed to what others in here have stated, I think she'll benefit from this just as much as Martina. Martina has a lot of power players she'll run up against and well it's no secret that Maria's biggest hole in her game is netplay and who better to play with than Martina? Anyway, it doesn't even matter that much, considering that Maria rarely practices with others, a competitive hit with another player will do her good.

I like how Martina gets on well with many girls on tour. Good for her. She's probably a refreshing addition to the lockerroom if you ask the others.

Martina has Clijsters to worry about first whom she hasn't beaten at all since her comeback. If and when she does at the AO QF, that's the only time Maria (given she reaches the semis herself) should worry about this hit with Hingis.

I have wanted to see Maria take doubles seriously and my top choice for her to progress with that would be Martina.

Same sentiments. I love both and I really think it will help Maria's game. And they look good together on court noh? They'll make a very interesting team. How I wish!

You know, all this talk about how dumb it is for Maria to practice with Martina, I think it really shows how much each of them respect each other. Maria clearly sees Martina as a player it is important to figure out, and Martina certainly realizes that with the Florida brand of tennis (serve and forehand, so-so movement, solid backhand) becoming the dominant trend, it is a very good move to practice with the queen of Florida tennis.

Venus's interviews are always great to listen to

Now, I would agree that Maria is a luke-warm interviewer and sounds pretty much like every dumb jock in history (think Brendan Frasier as the basketball player in "Bedazzled") with the "you know, I just think I went out there and played my game, I take this one match at a time, I didn't learn how to think or speak my mind, blah blah blah", listening to Venus' interviews are physically painful. She gives the impression on court of being so intense, and in her interviewers, she just transforms into an art teacher (sorry art teachers, my wife is one, don't yell) and talks about the ethereal majesty of, you know, being an athlete. It's like she's been smoking pot before she interviews; she ranges from spacey to paranoid.

I hope you all enjoy this winning contribution from me, I've been grading papers all weekend, and my brain is fried.

ANYWAY, I hope the report that Venus will be back soon is true, as she always adds class to a draw.

These are nice pics. It's always good to practice with someone who can make your practice worth your while. You know practice with someone who can actually make you feel the court better. And practicing with a former number 1 and AO winner is a good thing to do. And for Hingis, well it's just nice to see her together with Masha on the court.

practicing with another top player is always a good idea. think possibly martina can get more out of the practice than maria can, but think it's a win-win for both. would love to see those two in the semis, that would be mouth watering. didn't they practice when martina was training to come back on tour. since they already have a history it makes sense for them to hit together. wish serena would hit with them, could help her a lot too. hate it when the women players practise with men players, dont think it's as helpful as practicing with other women.

Martina is playing doubles with Svetlana Kuznetsova in Melbourne -- another player she gets along well with.

Actually, I don't see why these pix surprise anyone. It is not the first time they've practiced together and we have seen pictures of them watching matches together. They are friends. I doubt that they go shopping together, but at tournaments they are friends, just as Martina is friends with most of the other girls. Most of them like her a lot. Kuzy said that after their first match up.

I've also got to think this is good for Hingis' confidence. Practicing with the best player on tour right now, and most likely competing closely with her, is good prep for Oz after two close losses to Jelena and Dinara. It cant hurt Maria either, sine Hingis is an intense competitor even in pratice sessions and a fixture in the top 10 at this point.

You may have been trying to insult Venus here, but in my opinion you have praised her unknowningly. IMO she is a deep philisophical person, and yes it might be painful for someone who doesn't possess the same type of mind to listen to. ;)
