oh serena. these pictures are kinda....hmmmm...i don't know how to say this...may be a little bit sad.

when she was winning her majors, she had this "look" even in her press conferences and in her practice pics before the slams start. Now the press seems to be picking a lot of shots of her being seen as negative and frustrated. and THIS IS frustating for tennis fans because this is not the same great Serena Williams that we were all awed back in 2002-2003.

I wish her well in this tournament.

Okay, Serena doesn't look huge. That was last year at Oz. She was really big then. Now, she's like 2/5 of the way she was in 2000-2004 in-shape wise.

I think some of you pick on her size too much. Why does she have to be so muscle bound and not anybody else? Think she just needs to lose about 10 lbs. I'm surprised people don't talk about Clijsters. She is kinda big herself and has a gut..

Not too much. I'm sure she lost a little weight because of how much tennis she played in Hobart. She prob has just been working out some and on the court practicing. She def. looks better, but maybe that had all to do with the camera angle and the outfit she was wearing in Hobart. And plus, her upper body is not the prob, it is the lower body. These pics don't show that part of her.

I hope you people who are saying Serena looks so fit, and the field better watch out are being sarcastic. I am sick of tired of thining she'll get it togeter. This has been going onfor a year and a half. :o She looks horrible. And from those pics, seems to me her practise isn't going too well. :help: :o

She doesn't look horrible. Yes she needs to get a little fitter but she looks much better.

The fact that she's even on a tennis court is encouraging. I'm glad that she's practicing - and she looks better than she has in a while. The more matches she plays, the better shape she'll get in. Match play is just what she needs right now. I think she'll take a lot of positives back with her to the US when she returns. Good luck Serena! :yeah:

She is still chunky in her "back".

I'm very happy to see her on a court, in her second event in Janurary, practicing. I love the fact that she will be using a racquet more adept to her game, which means that she knows that she's going to need to be timing the ball well and getting her body into position. That other racquet allowed her to be off-balance and still hit good shots or it gave her a false sense of power. She wasn't even swinging and the ball was going pretty fast. I hope that this racquet doesn't affect her serving because when I switched from my FlexPoint 4 to Instinct Flexpoint, serving was the first thing I noticed that was different. Anyways, good luck to her tomorrow night. Can't wait to see Venus on the court as well.

:yeah: I hope Serena can adjust quickly. When I mentioned the change in racquets affecting her game, no one listened, but I'm glad you know what I'm talking about :yeah:

Good Luck Ree! And Honestly, she DOES look better than Hobart, but I think that's becuase she's wearing more form fitting clothes. She should be poised to do well there. :bounce: I'm SOOOOOOOO excited :yeah:

She is not in optimal shape but she of course has been worse...still her fitness is a major reason she was so good back in the day. Most of the other top players are in peak condition...can she compete with that? I''m hoping for a great result here...but I don't think it's likely. Still, good luck and give it all you've got Serena!

I don't think she is not in shape. Rather I think this is just her body type, typical of many women with the same ethnic origin as Serena. IMO Venus inherited the body structure/build from her father while Serena from her mom. I just don't think this is such a big problem. And as she grows older, her natural body build will be more prevalent. Also, I think you guys are just being a little harsh by imposing the "white" standard on someone like Serena, as I mentioned above, this is the natural body build for women from her ethnicity. For God sake, look at Daniela, she is too thin, but did anyone make any thing against that? People just think Daniela is sexy, blah blah blah. Despite her various attempt Daniela is still around the same shape. So if Serena can't do much about it, why should we say so much about that?

She's definately getting there. I don't know if it's what she's wearing but her legs definately look a little less large than before. And her arms are looking much better but not as ripe as they were in her prime. She looks about 50% to me. People need to take the positives out of the situation. Every fan will do so but, understandably, every hater won't. In fact, I bet most of the negative comments in here are from people who are scared of what they see i.e. a improving Serena who is ready to take her place at the top of the game. And the fact that she looks so distressed in her practice pics, IMHO, tells me that she's just the perfectionist as she always was. She always gets pissed off if she can't make a forehand or if shes not happy with her serve. Those pics remind me of how she was back in her prime.

Tricky opponent for Serena first round. Santangelo had a great run here in 04, reached the fourth round and gave Justine quite a match in that second set. Santangelo is an all-rounded type of player and takes the ball very early. Saying that though, her margin for error is a bit all-over the place so she can be a bit hit and miss. Serena will have to be moving well i feel.

I'd expect it to take a few games for Serena to adjust to the odd spin Mara puts on the ball, but if Serena is any type of decent form she shouldn't have too many major problems. As you say, movement will be key. :)

I was at Center court and watched their whole match at Wimby 2005.

I dont know what it was but even when Serena lost the first set, I just knew that she was going to win, and didnt really have any nerves about her losing that match.

She was very sub-par that day and still walked away with the win.

I think the match will be tough for Serena now, seen as she has just come back, but if any place can bring out the fighting spirit in Serena, its the Rod Laver Areana. I see Serena winning 6-4 6-3!!!

That's a dangerous suggestion for an athlete. Serena will lose the weight with exercise and playing matches. That's the problem with society today, everyone wants a quick fix. The last thing an athlete needs is to go on a diet.

At least she's not tha same big Serena as last year.
She can't be playing well, but I hope she fit and ready to get some matches under her belt. She needs to play as much as possible to regain her confidence, the fitness is also a great factor but she can do it in like 2 months time.:)
Just win a couple of matches Ree!:bounce:
though, I know it's gona be tough 1st round Vs Mara - a thrilling opener that'll be for sure:hearts:

LOL @ some people who think she is in great shape. :tape:

Ana is pretty chunky. I wouldnt say shes in the greatest shape either :)

Anyway she looks good to me. I dont expect her to get back to her 2002 shape. As long as her movement is better she'll be fine

She looks better than last year anyway, and she's on the right track, I just hope she doesn't disappear until Miami after the AO, that'll just prolong the problem, she needs to PLAY :)

As I said before Serena is not fat at all just bulked up and theres a difference. She just needs to do some High Intensity Training to get back lean and ripped, that could take up to a month or two or three depending how hard she trains, but she needs to add some weight lifting with medium weights and hight reps to do it.

MrSerenaWilliams
Jan 13th, 2007, 06:02 PM
so far she's slated to play:
Bangalore and Dubai after the AO, and I hope she squeezes a WC out of Paris indoors. 5 tourneys by Miami would be PERFECT, then if she played both green clay tournies and Rome, she'd be @ 10 by RG, then Wim, LA, and Montreal, she'd have her best shot @ the USO w/ almost 15 tourneys under her belt. The key is playing, not playing is what got her in this shape. Playing can get her back there. :yeah:

While fitness has been something Serena's been struggling with the most. My biggest concern is not so much her weight, but her face just doesn't look all that lively and youthful to me. I know shes getting older, so I can't really expect to look as she did in the previous years, but shes also only 25 years old. I'm starting to wonder whether alot of whats she's gone through is starting to take a toil on her. While I want her to be fit on the court, I also want her to be happy as well.

No, she didn't look like that in July. She looked like that after the photo was heavily retouched. They can do amazing things with Photoshop, even make her half as wide as she really is. The candids are the best.

serena has not gotten fit since we last saw pics 3 days ago, guys. :o

serena fans need to stop bragging about how much better she looks that ao 06. she was huge then, and if she hadn't lost any of that fat in a year, then that would be pathetic. she is not at peak shape and has a long way to go. playing 6 tournaments a year, it's going to be tougher for her to stay fit.

U must not be a big tennis fan then.. Cuz pretty much EVERYONE had something to say about Daniela's weight

Yea, people did mentioned about Daniela's weight. But do they ever beat Daniela as much as Serena? Where are the bamboo stick and monkey jokes? All I hear is the McDonald and burger jokes on Serena. At first, I thought they were funny, but eventually they have gotten to a point where they get disgusting. How could people just laugh/be so harsh at someone's body like that? If she can't loose it, she can't. I honestly think her USO 2006 shape is the best she can do if she is to ever put any effort back to it, which is far from her heydays. But as long as she is playing tennis and she is happy, everything is fine.

I think some of you pick on her size too much. Why does she have to be so muscle bound and not anybody else? Think she just needs to lose about 10 lbs. I'm surprised people don't talk about Clijsters. She is kinda big herself and has a gut..

You can't possibly be serious comparing Serena to Kim? :tape:

as long as people realize she will never be a beanpole like venus. thats not her body type, she will always be somewhat thick. think she just about at her target weight, another 10-15lbs and shes perfect. whats perfect for her isnt perfect for everyone btw.

Nobody in here is bragging, Serena is obviously still out of shape. You just want to take it that way because you know Serena is at a low point and you are reveling in it. And thats a pretty fucked up, vulturish attitude to have, if you ask me.

Serena looks fine. Much better than she did last year, and no one expects anything from her. I wouldn't be surprised if she lost 3rd round or wins the whole thing. Serena seems to like to win the AO on odd numbered years so watch out.

Honestly, yeah Serena could get into better shape but I'm just happy that she is back on the court. And if she is healthy (meaning no soreness in her knee or any other body part), then I'm just glad that she is back on tour. At this point in her career, I think she knows that she has to put hard work into tennis. As painful as it is to see her ranked so low, she simply has not played or won enough matches to be ranked any higher.

Also, I remember Pam Shriver or some other commentators saying that Serena is still possibly dealing with her sister's death (Yetunde). I know that everyone has (at one point in their lives) lost a loved one and everyone deals with it differently. Serena and Venus were (and still are) close to their sisters. The loss of Yetunde is definitely still on their minds (and who could blame them, since they were extremely close).

Whatever the case is, Serena and Venus are living their own lives. We know what they are capable of and we are all hoping the best for them. I am and will always be a fan of them.
