I've always been curious to compare the different forehand grips the players use and see, for instance, if one player uses a grip to a greater effect than another. It'd also be interesting to see overall which grip is used by the players who supposedly have the best forehands. So, post if you know. Oh, also you can use this thread to request if someone knows the grip of your specific favorite that isn't listed. Thanks a lot.
btw, the top 20 is:

(1) HENIN-HARDENNE, JUSTINE BEL

(2) SHARAPOVA, MARIA RUS

(3) MAURESMO, AMELIE FRA

no pros hit with continental grips and get the amount of racquet-head speed that Serena does. continental grips were grips in the era of wooden racquets. Serena is FOR SURE semi-western. you can't hit as open-stance as she does and generate the amount of topspin that Serena does with a continental. Mara Santangelo and maybe Kristina Brandi. But NO way to Serena. Only on the serve does she hit with a continental.

All the top players today use pretty much the same semi-Western forehand grip, with minor variations. No players use Continental. I'd guess the furthest Western grip is Kuznetsova. The closest to Eastern is probably Sharapova.

pretty much right. Ana I. is probably eastern if you ask me. Marion Bartoli prob has eastern grips on both hands for her forehand. Idk, that's just a guess. I would also say that Schiavone has an extreme western as does Nadia, Amelie, and maybe Patty.

Mara Santangelo and maybe Kristina Brandi.

yup. These two players both have very funny looking side-spin forehands because of their Continental grips.

Sharapova and Serena are both definitely semi-westerns

Mara Santangelo's shots are soo weird to watch in person anyways (i never saw her on tv). You never ever think her forehand can make it past the net, than stay in the court but it does. Her grip is so eastern that she almost slices the ball a little.

i think lindsays grip is the most eastern of all (former) top players, except for graf. its amazing that she has to much control!

i think you have too many players with western. i think dementieva, shahar, vaidisova, jankovic and kuzzy hit with semi western grips. jankovic and vaidisova for sure. watch justine and momo - their forehand grips are completely different to the players you say have western grips.

the western grip isnt actually that common compared to the semi western grip which the vast majority of players hit with (or at least a variation of the semi western grip)

i would think tati and na do too. mary hits with an eastern grip

Pretty much dead on except for Justine, who is semi-western (there was article made about her grip in Tennis mag). And Ana Ivanovic has said it herself that she uses semi-western grip (and her tip was "put the racquet on the ground and pick it up"). Lindsay actually varies. And Martina Hingis is definitely not extreme-western, but western. Mary actually hits with a western grip. Tatiana semi-western and Na semi-western too. Especially with Na because her groundstroke resembles that of Kim Clijsters.

IMO extreme western players tend to look awkward in their forehand action shot due to the use of their wrists. Normally we hit the ball with the palm facing the ball, but i think extreme western people hit the ball with the back of their hand facing the ball. So it is rather easy to pick up.

i think when martina was getting hit off the court, before she "retired" she would use a more western grip to get more spin, didnt work though :0, she just dosent have enought racquet head speed
