What is the most important thing to teach someone playing tennis?

I am teaching an adult tennis from scratch and I need to come up with a lesson plan.

We did about 5 times in the summer and each time I told my "student" to just have fun and focus on making clean contact with the ball. I didn't give any technical instruction beyond "bend your knees and follow through".

I'm a 3.0 intermediate player myself.

Help me!

Be as detailed as you like.

THE MOST IMPORTANT THING (Actually two things :D ) :

1. ALWAYS WATCH THE BALL!!! BUT ALWAYS!!!
2. LEARN HIM HOW TO HOLD RAQUET, SO IT SUITS HIM

Hope I helped ;)

teach him the semi-open stance, over-the-top backswing with the racquet facing the wall (don't let him take the racquet back too far), low to high swing motion (but don't encourage too much ala Rafael Nadal because this person is just a beginner and doesn't need that much topspin), remember elastic power--so let him prepare early, but not too much so the motion is still fluid, keep the serve simple... he might be overwhelmed if you tell him a lot, so just give him the continental grip and then tell him to toss the ball and tell him to "just hit it"

that's my advice. hope it helps

THE BEST PRACTICE EVER!!!

I know that Monika Seleš once practiced with THREE BALLS  in one time, hiting on wall! And she was hiting it pretty hard! I was amazed

A racket.

A wall.

Near a tennis court so they can watch others play while they "play the wall" that's what my Daddy did to me when I was little and I ended up playing up through college and love the game to this day.

The less instruction early on, the better...too many topspin robots in the tennis world these days. :tape:

"mini tennis" and definitely try the two handed backhand as a START. and watching stuff on TV does help, too.

Teach them these essential tips:

1. Let out a blood-curdling scream after each groundstroke.

2. Pump your fist after each of your opponent's unforced errors.

3. 3 fingers = Don't eat the banana; 4 fingers = Don't forget to eat a banana!

4. All your opponent knows how to do is keep the ball in play; you are your only enemy!

definitely the two handed backhand. it is so hard to develop a one handed backhand. i tried for a while but it's just too frustrating. now i have a really good two hander and i'll take what i can get. :yeah:

and i got a lot of my form/shots from watching my favorite players. needless to say i don't serve well. thanks dementieva. thanks nalbandian. :o

... and not forgetin the fist-pumpin, scissor-kickin, hop+skip+and-a-jumpin routine back to the chair after your student has just won a game to avoid being bagelled in the second set :D

seriously:
footwork, lots of little steps and its correct usage in relation to the shot is important for beginners.
