View Full Version : Wertheim: Sharapova d. Jankovic in AO Final

Women's Top Seeds
1
Maria Sharapova
We're putting our Australian dollars here. Best fighter in the draw now that Justin Henin-Hardenne is sipping mai tais in Tahiti or shopping at Baby Gap. Sharapova usually plays well in Australia and can adjust her game to the court speed. For a glimpse of the future, check out her second rounder vs. Anastassia Rodionova.
2
Amelie Mauresmo
Defending champ is in the least formidable quadrant. She doesn't however, enter with much momentum.
3
Svetlana Kuznetsova
Athletic Russian seems destined to reside outside the spotlight. She sure can't complain about her draw, but we like Jelena Jankovic to prevail in her quarter.
4
Kim Clijsters
Belgian may be in final year of her career but she enters on a monstrous roll. And, historically, she has played well at the A.O., an event played on a surface ideally tailored to her game. Can she begin her final year with a second Slam?
5
Nadia Petrova
Medic! On paper, athletic Russian is a threat to win. But health -- as always -- is a concern. She retired from first match in Sydney on account of an abdominal strain.
6
Martina Hingis
A surprise quarterfinalist in '06 (and three-time winner), Hingis plays well in Melbourne, but looked iffy in tune-ups. (Maybe that gift registry is on her mind.)
7
Elena Dementieva
Simply too many talented opponents who can take advantage of her weaknesses. Overdue for a "statement Slam" but we'll wait till Paris for that.
8
Patty Schnyder
Swiss Miss-tery is a terminal underachiever in Slams, now on the downside of a mercurial (though entertaining ) career. Watch for Shuai Peng to take her out early.
9
Dinara Safina
No longer simply Marat's little sister, but still needs to establish herself at a Major. Not a bad bet to "upset" Hingis, but we don't like her chances against Clijsters in a likely quarterfinal.
10
Nicole Vaidisova
Czech teenager backslid a bit after reaching French Open semis, but her aggressive, if unimaginative, always puts her on a short list to win Majors. Plus her dismemberment of Ivanovic last week bodes well. Could get an early workout from steady Jill Craybas.
11
Jelena Jankovic
Serb has been playing lights-out tennis -- as Brad Gilbert would say -- in the tune-ups. Blessed with a beneficent draw, she has a good shot at her second straight Slam semifinal.
12
Anna Chakvetadze
Little-known Russian has been playing top-five tennis since the fall. Looked sharp in tune-ups to boot. A player to watch.
13
Ana Ivanovic
Ascending Serb is (over)due for a breakthrough. No reason it can't be here.
14
Francesca Schiavone
Skeevy Wonder is always fun to watch, but she lacks the big weapons to be a major threat. Might live up to her seeding but that's about it.
15
Daniela Hantuchova
May last a few rounds but she's not beating Clijsters in round four.
16
Shahar Peer
Future top-10er ought to at least live up to her seeding.

Seeds 17-32

Vera Zvonareva: Seems to be awakening from an extended slump.
Sam Stosur: With Molik still on the mend, hard-charging Stosur is best local hope.
Li Na: Highest-ranked Chinese woman is a player no one wants to face. Beat Dementieva last week.
Alona Bondarenko: Still inexperienced but a player to watch.
Eleni Daniilidou: Health/fitness is always an issue, but if nothing else, she'll have the Greek contingent on her side.

Dark Horse Nation

Alicia Molik: Scored nice win over Bondarenko in Hobart. Is the darling of the '05 event finally back?
Agnieszka Radwanska: Trivia: Last player to have beaten Venus Williams.
Victoria Azarenka: No less than Andre Agassi has gushed about her talent.
Sania Mirza: Tournament where she first made her name several years ago.

First-Round Matches To Watch

Ana Ivanovic v. Vania King: Best American teenager gets tough draw, starting out against 13th seed.
Emilie Loit v. Aravene Rezai: Two Frenchefemmes (and Mailbag faves) throw down early.
Martina Hingis v. Nathalie Dechy: The Chuckster starts out against a steady (if mentally gimpy) veteran.
Serena Williams v. Mara Santangelo: Big chance for Italienne to score an "upset."
Maria Kirilenko v. Karolina Sprem: A lot of unfulfilled talent on display here.

Predictions

SEMIFINALS: Sharapova defeats Clijsters, Jankovic defeats Mauresmo
FINAL: Sharapova defeats Jankovic
DOUBLES WINNER: Stosur-Lisa Raymond

I think those kinds of predictions are pointless. It's kind of like when people predict a winner based on their ranking. It's whoever brings their game. I think JJ could beat any player in the WTA. If she's on form. Even when she's not on form, she plays hard to win.

Clijsters will beat Sharapova
Mauresmo will beat Janko or Serena :p

He thinks Santangelo will beat Serena :weirdo:

When was the last time a player outside the top 10 (Jankovic) has been picked by so many?

I think this is the 5th time in a row he's written that. Thankfully Jankovic is no longer "a rising teenager" according to him.

Is he talking about Arina?
Wertheim is such a stupid tard, I don't even know what he's talking about.
He's a basketball writer. He doesn't go to Melbourne, he covers the NBA.

I was just reading this and unless that's a really weird picture, they posted up a pic of Ivanovic for Petrova.

If that's Nadia, then I think I need my eyes checked.

Okay, I'm not blind...

They put up a picture (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2007/writers/jon_wertheim/01/12/aussie.men/index.html?eref=writers) of Nalbandian for Berdych.

Which begs the question: Do these idiots even know where the tournament is being held?

As much as people put Jelena in GS final....i just dont think its gonna happen. She's my no.1 player and i would be heeps happy if that really happens. I want her to get to QF...become a top 8 player and constantly get QF or higher at GS...so she can win it one day!

Please Jelena reach Quarters!

If he remembered that Blake has to win the semis, before he gets to the final, I kinda agree. Blake has been hot, and since the USO, went 18-5 (2 titles 2 finals [one to be played today]) so I think he can get to the final...hopefully Roddick can take Fed out in the semis and Blake can get his first slam :bounce:

I like Wertheim. And weird, Bodo (or Steggy, if you want to be anal) was praising Jon like mad in a post earlier about how he's a great tennis writer. I find him an interesting read. However, his predictions are a mix of safe and very unsafe (like with Blake in the Wimbledon semifinals), so when he's off, he looks stupid. It's always nice to take a gamble.

The seed reports (not the predictions) aren't too bad actually, compared to some of Wertheim's previous ones.

Wertheim isn't biased and spiteful like say Bodo, but it's plainly obvious he doesn't know much about women's tennis. His descriptions of the lower ranked women's seeds on previous reports were so inaccurate that I wondered if Wertheim had ever seen them play.

I don't think predictions are meant to be accurate but more fun  but it's a question whether his preds are fun

It's not that unreasonable a suggestion - Jankovic seems pretty insatiable for glory at the moment.

I'd far rather see and Amelie - Kim final as Kim probably won't play here next year.

It's a shame he didn't say more about Serena - she's really someone you can never count out.

Jan 13th, 2007, 12:51 AM
Well...the fact that they are presenting him as "tennis expert" doesn't mean that his preds are more or less accurate then mines  But I think his semis are quite realistic ;) But everything can happen. Hingis is always there, Serena is freath to everyone, Petrova as well...
