Maria has a chance to win 2 matches, if she plays well

Maria Kirilenko RUS (26) vs. Karolina Sprem CRO
QUALIFIER vs. Elena Likhovtseva RUS

Jan 12th, 2007, 01:16 AM
Not a bad draw. She can definatly get into the third round. I don't think that Sveta in the thirf round is impossible either. Especialy if Svetlana isn't at 100%. Good luck Makiri!

Good Luck Makiri:kiss: :hearts:

Not too bad, not too bad at all... I won't make any predictions about how far she will get or anything coz Makiri is too unpredictable, but I'd just love to see her win a match!

Good luck sweet Makiri

I'm hoping for the best for Little Masha in Melbourne. But I am worried for her as she seems to regularly get blown away by power players. :smash: And even though Karolina Sprem isn't an Amazon she has alot of power so it's vital Maria make her play long points and let Sprem beat herself with unforced errors. I hope Masha plays a smart match and comes out the victor. Udachi Maria! :bounce:

She really mixed it up and came too the net a lot! Must be a real confidence booster!

Next up is Julia Vakulenko, and Maria will have to play with the same determination against her.

Go Masha!

Maria did well to beat the hard hitting Karolina Sprem in 3 sets in round one. Especially after Sprem won the first set. I hope the heat in Austrtalia doesn't weaken Maria. She's one of the slighter players so I'm concerned about her wilting in the oppresive heat. :( And I think her match against Julia Vakulenko is a tricky one.

Jan 16th, 2007, 09:37 PM
I think Makiri is tremendously fit. Hopefully, she'll hydrate herself before, during, and after the match. I think she needs to do what Pin did to Masha yesterday. Keep Julia out there on the court, make her hit that one extra ball, and let her wilt under the oppressive heat. Makiri needs to come to the net like she did in her last match, get her opponent involved in long rallies, hit some loopy shots (moonballs), and make Vakulenko generate her own pace. One thing I don't want Makiri to do is try to end the points early just to get off the court. This will be a true test of Makiri's patience and willingness to stay out there and fight. Good luck Makiri!:)

Are these stats for real? Check out the stats from Maria's win over Sprem at www.australianopen.com/en_AU/scores/stats/day5/2145ms.html (http://www.australianopen.com/en_AU/scores/stats/day5/2145ms.html). Masha had some nice numbers. Especially the serving department with 5 aces to only 1 double fault. But the numbers say Sprem had 27 more winners than Maria and an amazing 47 more unforced errors tham Maria did. I know Sprem has a bigger game than Masha but Sprems's winners and unforced erorrs numbers seem far fetched to me. If Masha played as clean a match as the numbers indicate then I'm happy about that. :) This is the style of play she should use against the power players. Let them beat themselves. And according to the match statistics that's what she did against Sprem.

Jan 17th, 2007, 02:35 AM
Damn it! makiri is down a set 4-6:sad:

Jan 17th, 2007, 03:53 AM
Nice effort Maria! She's not playing her best but she has been able to fight her way through! Good luck against Svetlana! Give it everything you got!

Jan 17th, 2007, 05:07 AM
Well done Maria!! I really like the fact that she lost the 1st set in both of her matches so far and fought back and won both times. The fight is back and that is a good sign. I hope she comes out and just goes for it against Kuznetsova. She has nothing to lose. Good luck Maria!!

I have the perfect coach for Maria, Darren Cahill. He took Lleyton Hewitt & Andre Agassi to #1. He is at the Open commentating for ESPN. Maria should meet with him and get him to coach her. He would do wonders for Maria and her game.

Jan 17th, 2007, 06:33 AM
good win again Masha ;) :)

that was too much of a struggle again.

PS: i dont think Cahill would work with WTA players, but you never know.

Jan 17th, 2007, 08:05 AM
Nice win again. Best of luck for the next round! :)

That's another nice come from behind win for Masha in Melbourne. Maria has won her first 2 matches at this years Australian Open mainly because she has limited her unforced errors. That's a good sign. She let Sprem and Vakulenko beat themselves and they did. She needs to do the same against Kuznetsova. And if Makiri plays some great defense Kuznetsova could make alot of unforced errors.

Jan 19th, 2007, 11:40 AM
Maria played really well in the second, Svets was just a little too powerful but Maria looks to have found some good form again which is great news.

Jan 19th, 2007, 02:46 PM
 She played well in the second set thought she might be on to something im more optimistic about the season now then i was before which is great but still sad she had to go out.

I'm dissapointed this match was played with the roof closed because Masha needed the outdoor elements like heat to tire the much heavier Kuznetsova and for her to have any realistic chance to win. I expected Svetlana to roll over Little Masha and she did. And another slow start for Masha was too much for her to overcome this time.

I think the 2 toughest matchups for Makiri on the WTA Tour are Kim Clijsters and Svetlana Kuznetsova. They are the same height as Makiri but probably weigh about 40 pounds more than Masha making it easy for them to overpower her off the ground and with the serve. :( Then to boot they are faster than Maria as well. Masha floats and glides beautifully around the court the way Anastasia Myskina does. But Clijsters and Kuznetsova have a burst of speed from their incredbly strong legs that Masha lacks. I would much rather have Makiri play any other WTA players besides Clijsters and Kuznetsova. She really has nothing to hurt Kim and Svetlana with and she can't outrun them either. And this makes it almost impossible for her to beat them.

Atleast Masha looks to be playing some good tennis to start the year. I hope she stays healthy and makes a serious run at the top 20 again.

Jan 19th, 2007, 03:25 PM
Maria!!!!!!!!! ........ ........:sobbing: ........:hysteric: Good luck Makiri in Women's doubles and Mixed doubles;)

Masha  :sobbing: but good to hear she played well in the second set.

Jan 19th, 2007, 04:13 PM
Maria.

I saw a good chunk of the match.

Basically all of the 2nd set.

Maria was playing pretty good in the second set, but she struggled holding serve and didn't convert her chances because she should have broken for 4*-3.

More UE's started to creep in towards the end.

She had some nice passing shots, but she didn't do too well herself at net either. :o

Jan 19th, 2007, 04:28 PM
Makiri  I hope you'll do well in Doubles and Mixed :D
