The main thing is for Anna to get out of Hobart healthy. That stomach problem could be recurring.
If Anna is healthy, she'll do well with this draw.

Jan 12th, 2007, 04:39 AM
The first two rounds appear roadblock free. I think Stosur would be a very tough match should they both make it that far. Schnyder is always tricky.

Overall a pretty good draw. We knew she'd have to go against a top 8 player in the fourth round and Schnyder is ranked 8 so that was the best outcome ranking wise.

I hope Anna gets out of Hobart with her stomach intact and can play pain free in Melbourne.

Anna has lost only twice since last grand slam!

First was against Lindsay Davenport 6-7 6-3 5-7...
Second loss was against Stosur but it was only because Anna was ill!!!

Since US open last year she has defeated Jankovic, Medina Garrigues, Safina, Schiavone, Dementieva, Petrova, Zheng... and many others :bigclap:

Stosur... (last player that has beaten Chaky)

I like to think that doesn't count because she had flu. The last person to beat a fully fit Anna was Davenport in Beijing, five tournaments ago. ;)

The schedule for Monday is out and Anna's not on it so she gets another day to prepare. :)

Last year Anna lost in straight sets to Nicole Vaidisova in the second round gaining her 38 points. But with the new points system she would now get 60 points for making the second round. This is the only slam where Anna hasn't been beyond round 2. With her form this year there is considerable opportunity to rectify that and get lots of ranking points. :D

I have 3 questions regarding AO.

1. Will Anya play doubles?
2. If so, who is Little Mary's partner?
3. Should Chaky focus solely on singles and skip doubles?
;)

goldenlox
Jan 13th, 2007, 02:34 PM
I don't know if she's playing doubles. Right now, she might want to just focus on singles. There's huge money involved if she keeps up these good results.

goldenlox
Jan 13th, 2007, 10:50 PM
Matt Cronin's pre-AO comments -

Anna Chakvetadze: Tracy Austin calls her the new Hingis. She might be a little grittier, but is also a bit too emotional. She's smart, play the angles well and is rising daily. Don't be stunned if the Russian reaches the semis.

This isn't the best draw imo. Shouldn't have too many problems before the 3rd round. But Sam in Australia is very very tough. But first things first, all the focus has to be on Bammer and her stomach problem.

She still plays Doubles with Mara Santangelo they got a tough opener with Safina/Srebotnik :scared:

Okay, my theory is Anna told Vesnina that she wasn't going to concentrate on doubles this year because she was expecting to go far in singles so it would be more fair on Elena if they played with different doubles partners.

Given how well Anna and Mara did last week I don't expect them to get much further than round 1. :tape:

Well done Anna. :)

Looked like a horrible match from the stats. The extreme heat rule came in at the end of the first set so they were slogging through 40 degree heat.

Anna was serving at under 50 percent and making tons of unforced errors. She went a break down in the second and saved a set point before coming back. Lucky this didn't go to three sets.

Hope she doesn't have to play at midday for the next match.

cosmoose

Anna should have come to the net more often since her groundstrokes were very suspect today.
It would have shortened the plays and conserved energy
She plays doubles all the time, her vollying should be good enough as a weapon.

Much better for Anna to play Kostanic. You can't quantify how much the Aussie crowd would have helped Sam Stosur on a stadium court.

I'd say it's unlikely this match will be televised in the UK as I don't imagine they'll stick it on the biggest courts.

Kostanic hit a lot of winners against Stosur and she's done well to get to round 3. But she's also taken out 2 Aussies in the first two rounds so perhaps the crowd will get with Anna. They had one previous meeting in San Diego last year which Anna won 6-4 6-3. :)

Yeah, I think Anna has had quite a nice draw and she's putting in her best ever performance at this event. Kostanic could be dangerous in that she's handled the big stage here already and knocked out the crowd favorite. But Anna knows how to beat her and she's playing so well right now.

This happened with Sveta also. She moved her ranking up at 18 & 19, but was still under the radar. Then she had a great USO draw, and won it.
I don't think Anna has a great late draw, in Sharapova's quarter, but her ranking is going to give her a lot of good draws.
That ranking is worth hundreds of thousands of dollars, if not millions..

I hope Anna didn't have to wait around all day Saturday. Rain sucks!

Favoritism by the Aussie schedulers. :(

No it is not. They didn't know it was going to rain all day. Molik's match was scheduled at night because it was seen as the marquee 3rd round match. It isn't only Anna in this situation. Hantuchova and Dinara are in the same situation. As soon as it was known that no play would be possible or highly unlikely the singles matches on outside courts were cancelled for the day so the players could go rest. You could argue that those who have already played & won their 3rd round have a slight advantage but that isn't due to any favouritism in the schedule, they were scheduled on Vodafone/RLA because they are the top seeds and big names, simple. Any advantage they have at this stage imo is rather non-existant any way, these girls are used to playing back to back days. The only way an advantage will possibly come in is if they play long matches in the heat tomorrow or late at night.

goldenlox
Jan 20th, 2007, 12:41 PM
That's favoritism, letting big names play indoors while the rest wait, then go home,.
But it doesn't matter. Just beat KT.

That is different. What Wintermute said and what you are saying are different arguments. You are talking in general terms about all the players on Vodafone/RLA, imo Wintermute was suggesting their was favourtism by the Australian organisers towards Molik alone. That I disagree with because Molik's match was not the only one completed while Anna's was not the only one delayed.

This is a tournament, they want to get people through the gates & sell tickets, you love to speak about money, that is one way the tournament makes it by selling tickets. If there are no matches, no body goes to watch. Why do you think Wimbledon are following suit and building a roof - it makes sense.

goldenlox
Jan 20th, 2007, 02:23 PM

Anna was troubled by Kostanic - a lefty with an all-court game. Schnyder will be more of that but even trickier. The commentator on Eurosport said earlier that Patty's third set against Molik yesterday was the best he'd ever seen her play.

Anna needs to cut down some of the errors. Her serve percentages aren't bad overall and in fact she is 9th on the first serve points won leaderboard for this tournament.

Sunday, 21 January 2007

No.12 women's seed Anna Chakvetadze has continued her strong progress through the early rounds of Australian Open 2007, winning her delayed third-round match against Jelena Kostanic Tosic in straight sets.

Chakvetadze, who won the Moorilla Hobart International in the lead-up to this tournament, has now dropped just one set in her opening three encounters and will play Swiss No.8 seed Patty Schnyder in the fourth round on Day Eight after her 6-4 6-4 win.

Kostanic Tosic had herself to blame for losing the first set after squandering no fewer than 10 break-point opportunities. Chakvetadze won just eight points on the Croatian's serve for the set, but got them when they mattered, converting her only break-point chance and wrapping up the set in 42 minutes.

Kostanic Tosic finally got the break she was looking for in the second set, but Chakvetadze broke her twice, dominating the Croatian's serve for much of the set. She wrapped up the match in an hour and 19 minutes for her second appearance in the fourth round of a Grand Slam tournament.

http://www.australianopen.com/images/pics/large/b_achakvetadze_0121_01.jpg

Match facts
• Kostanic Tosic had 37 unforced errors to Chakvetadze's 21
• Kostanic Tosic had 20 winners to Chakvetadze's 19
• There were 16 break-point opportunities for the match with just four converted, three by the Russian
• Chakvetadze won 70 points to Kostanic Tosic's 59
• There were just two double faults, both to the Croatian

Where did you watch it? I got the last game off ES but I must admit I was asleep at the start and missed the beginning.

I don't know what happened to Patty but this was a much easier scoreline for Anna than I would have predicted. Very nice, especially after having her previous round delayed.

Doesn't matter who Anna plays next, she will create problems for either one.

Doesn't matter who Anna plays next, she will create problems for either one.

i watched it on Bet Fair site
you can watch it all again from the Eurosport site

Cheers TBE.

It's funny how Anna has made the QFs this year but her ranking is still stuck at #13. At least she's closed the gap to the next spot now that the Top 10 has started to shift about a bit.

what i look more towards is the points a player has, she'll get to top 10 soon enough, gap to #9 is about 100 pts

Anna has nothing to defend, so her ranking will be fine.

I can't believe that scoreline. Anna really stepped it up today. That is great to see that she knows when to elevate her play. It will be very interesting to see how she does against Sharapova/Zvonareva.

And her first ever Slam Quarter!

Now, Anna should get some rest, and maybe watch a little of Vera-Maria in a few hours.
This has already been a good tournament for Anna.
Then, she just should go have fun in her QF. No matter what happens, Anna has already made a statement, that she is an elite player on this tour.

OMG to Quarters:bowdown: great victory!!!:bigclap: :bigclap: :bigclap:

In Eurosport offered the match from the games 1-3 until Anna I recover the break 3-4, I am charmed with the game of her, playing very deeply and attacking the balls and his alone rival cutting and running, then obviously one saw the end in the last game with the victory!

Anna this is wonderful!!!:smooch:

Very impressive Anna! She really stepped it up from her previous matches! She could really test Maria in the quarters assuming they play. Good luck Anna!

Anna won't become top 10 after this tournament unless she keeps going this week.
But she only has 90 points to defend before Warsaw, so she will be hard to keep out of the top 10.

Anna is playing the world #1, so this is a difficult match.
It's already been a good tournament forAnna.
Now she has to beat Maria and Kim to make the final.
I don't know if anyone on the tour can do that.

But Anna is quickly becoming one of the best players on the tour.

HARD TO PLEASE: Anna Chakvetadze is into the Australian Open quarterfinals and has won 20 of her last 21 matches, but she's not getting confident about her chances against either Maria Sharapova or Vera Zvonareva in the round of eight at Melbourne Park.
"I think I had a pretty good draw, especially the first two rounds," Chakvetadze said Monday after her 6-4, 6-1 win over Patty Schnyder. "I don't want to talk like some of the players 'I will win a Grand Slam'."
No. 12 Chakvetadze has won three of her four matches in straight sets here and was correct in saying she got lucky with the draw, not having to face a top player until beating the eighth-seeded Schnyder.
Since losing to Lindsay Davenport in the first round at Beijing in late September, Chakvetadze has lost just once - to Australian Samantha Stosur in the second round at Linz, Austria in late October.
Along the way, she has won tournaments in Moscow - beating five players ranked better than her, including compatriot Nadia Petrova - and in Hobart, Australia two weeks ago, where by luck or by skill, she beat five players who were not ranked as highly as she was.
Chakvetadze has already improved on her previous best Australian Open finish - second-round exits each of the last two years - and has matched her previous best finish in nine Grand Slams - the fourth round at last year's U.S. Open.
"I'm happy to be in quarterfinals, for sure." she said. "I didn't expect that when I came here because usually I play very bad in Australia."
Chakvetadze doesn't care who she faces next - Sharapova, who is 2-1 against Chakvetadze, but Chakvetadze's win came on a Sharapova walkover - or Zvonareva, who is 2-0 against her. "They both play pretty similar," Chakvetadze said. "They hit very flat, good serve. Better backhand, I think. They both very tough opponents."
