if yes how far does she have to go?

I think she would have to reach the semi-finals, at least, to get the #1 ranking.

Henin, Sharapova, Mauresmo and Kuznetsova will be in the contention for No.1 spot.

Making it to the final will guarantee No.1 rank for Sharapova regardless of her opponents' results.

To surpass Henin Maria needs to reach 4th round, to eliminate Kuznetsova out of the contention she has to reach QF. If Mauresmo loses prior to the final she is out of the contention too regardless of Sharapova's result.

Basing on these projections I would say only a miracle could prevent Maria from returning to No.1 spot.

Amelie could have kept the fate of #1 up to herself had she won Sydney. With a win in Sydney and AO she would be guaranteed to get #1, regardless of how far Maria would go. After Amelie lost in Sydney Maria's final at AO clinches the #1 spot for her, even if she loses the final to Amelie.

IN MARIA GETTING AT LEAST TO THE SEMIS,I'VE GOT THE SLIGHTEST DOUBT,BUT THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IS THAT HOW WILL BE SHAPED THIS YEAR'S DRAW? just let's wait until tomorrow to see how's draw so that then we'll be able to predict her place in AO!:worship:

Maria seems guaranteed to be no.1 IMO

Well Kim would closely reach #1 if she wins AO

Predicted Points for January 29th (With first round points only)
1 Henin 3311
2 Sharapova 3220
3 Mauresmo 2762
4 Kuznetsova 2416

If they get to third round an extra 88 points are added (Not enough for Sharapova)

i guess you're wrong?? if masha gets to the semis she'll be pretty much sure of her #1 in february, cuz she'll defence her points, and if she gets to the final then she will immediately become next #1.:hearts: by winning AO she'll be even more than 50 pts ahead of jhh!

Jan 11th, 2007, 10:50 PM
hang on, isnt kim not even defending anything?

If Mauresmo doesn't reach the final, Maria is number one even if she withraws.

If Mauresmo doesn't reach the final, Maria is number one even if she withraws.

Nope. If Mauresmo doesn't reach the final and Maria withraws before the start of the tournament then JHH will stay #1 (unless Kuzi wins the tournament).

Mathematically, Sharapova truly has assured herself of the # 1 ranking unless she exits in the first week of the tournament.
Clijsters is defending a Semifinal ( remember her ankle turn? ) and if she wins, even with the new ranking points, she will come close but will not be # 1. She would most likely achieve it at Indian Wells.
Mauresmo needs help from Sharapova. The new ranking points mean defending your place in the draw is meaningless. Mauresmo needs to make the final and get an EARLY loss from Sharapova or win the championship with Sharapova exiting in the quarters.
Kuznetsova is the ultra *if*. Because a Grand Slam is now 1000 pts, Kuznetsova can mathematically achieve # 1 as long as Sharapova loses before the 4th round and Mauresmo does not make the final. Oh and Kuznetsova would have to win the title.
Should be fun but Sharapova will be No. 1 when all is said and done.

Yes, that's true. I forgot Henin and Kuznetsova..
