It's a shame it ended the way it did. Katie and Chen seemed to be scrapping their hearts out. Both had saved a match point during the contest.

I expected Zhang to get through as well as the other two in fact....Zhang and Chen are exciting young players with some good firepower...they're rising fast.

From LTA Site:

O’Brien can thank her superior fitness after registering a first ever Grand Slam qualifying win. Both she and 192nd ranked Yanchong Chen had braved match points and the match seemed to be extending into marathon territory when the Chinese girl collapsed on court with severe cramp.

The trainer was called but Chen failed to respond and had no option but to hand a 3-6, 6-2, 8-7 retired victory to O’Brien who now meets the Russian 15-year-old Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova who impressively eliminated the far higher-ranked Georgian Margalita Chakhnashvali.

“I don’t think I’ve ever been involved in such a dramatic match,” O’Brien said.

“It wasn’t the best tennis but I wanted to win so badly. I had one match point then one against me and I was thinking I couldn’t face another repeat of what happened at Wimbledon and the US Open where I came so close only to lose.

“I couldn’t believe it when she collapsed with full body cramp. It’s not the nicest way to win but I’m just so happy to have pulled through. I’ve got to get myself back up for tomorrow now.”

Yan is inconsistent though. She can play really well one day and bad the next.

Yanchong  Shame that she had to end her match with Katie that way, but I'm not too upset with the result
