View Full Version : Is it safe to say now that the AO 2007 winner will be either Sharapova or Clijsters?

OUT: Justine, Venus, Myskina
RETIRED: Davenport
STRUGGLING: Hingis, Serena, Mauresmo

There's still Petrova, Kuznetsova, Dementieva, Jelena and Patty, but Sharapova is the favourite to win her 3rd Slam, and Clijsters is on form at the right moment.

So I guess either one of them have one hand on the title already... correct?

Sharapova and Clijsters seem to have the best chance but don't count out Jankovic.

Hingis isn't strong enough to get past the Quarters.

clijsters and jankovic are the form players.
sharapova has a couple of matches under her belt and she doesnt necessarily need that many to be able to play well.
but i'm not sure if jankovic can make a slam final yet, so it would be pretty much down to sharapova and clijsters

petrova and kuznetsova have injury problems so won't figure.
mauresmo hasnt had many matches and says she is unprepaed.
hingis still loses to practically any big hitter.
serena will do rubbish, she hasnt had many matches and hasnt played against a top player.

It is safe to say that it will be ONE or the OTHER. I will be shocked if Mauresmo defends her title.Mauresmo is too inconsistent. I fear Mauresmo maybe just like Novotna after she won Wimbledon almost a decade ago. Mauresmo may feel like all the pressure is off and I don't think the motivation will be the same. Mauresmo can now retire as a champion. Clijsters and Sharapova are much more consistent then Mauresmo I really believe those two are the ONLY real contenders.

Kim hardly performed at her best in 2006 and I HOPE that this was because she was not fit enough to get any consistency and a head of steam going with her tennis. If she can start to get that head of steam, I think Kim will be bloody hard to beat and a challenge again for Maria (Maria got the better of Kim in 2006, whereas up until then Kim had pretty much owned Maria). I'm basing my prediction on Kim's performance in 2005, when she hit the ground running after a come back from prolonged injury and never looked back until she won the US Open, carving up all the opposition on the way.

But there are still a lot of question marks for me in Kim's game and she will have to produce her consistent best for the next three weeks if she's going to win the AO. That's something she was not able to do at all in 2006, so surely that's her challenge now.

yes, consistent tennis but with agression is the key for kim in her AO campaign.

Im not counting out Jankovic, she has been amazing this year, and you cant count out the defending champ either.

momo :( kept throwing the balls... but i find her serve is ok, i appreciate her attack of approaching the net.

maria, she will get challenged by many good players this year. didnt see she works on her games.

kim, seems she is fit again. probably she will win one more G.S before her retirement.

I'm posting what I wrote in another thread.

I think only an in-form Maria can stop Clijsters. Clijsters is definetely the favourite.
She has no pressure on the court because her main rivals are either out(Justine, Venus, Davenport) or out of form (Mauresmo, Serena).
She has no pressure due to her personal life because she has said it would be her last year on tour (which we'll wait and see if it's true and I highly doubt it).
She has no pressure coming from the Aussie crowd since she has backed up Hewitt about his injuries out of nowhere (why she hasn't said anything before about him until this very moment, I have no idea).

So there is your AO champ: Clijsters

Of course not.

Mauresmo is as unprepared as she was last year...

Category Two: Amelie Mauresmo & Jelena Jankovic
Category Three: Nadia Petrova & Svetlana Kuznetsova
Category Four: Martina Hingis & Elena Dementieva
Category Five: Nicole Vaidisova & Ana Ivanovic

would say hingis is higher than kuznetsova, just a felling

But all in all I agree, and the winner will be from the first two groups

Nothing is safe to say, Kim could have a total off day round 1 and out she is... It's tennis :)

no I don't think it would be right to rule out so many players. Anything can happen in sport just like that, and either could go out early. Look today, I saw the highlights of the Clijsters-Li match, and it wasn't so straight forward for Clijsters, she had to work hard for it, and the same will happen during the AO. I reckon there are still many players involved in the title, and it would be silly to rule them out of the title now, when the draw hasn't even been made. I would go for Jankovic to win the title, she is the only player who has been really impressive so far this year, and I think she'll beat Clijsters tommorow, and throw down the gauntlet to her rivals for the title. It should be an interesting tournament, and I won't be suprised to see a different winner of the title.

This sounds about right to me. personally, I hope that Kim wins: it'd be neat to see her take a second major, particularly one that she enjoys so much.

It'd be a slap in the face for Lleyton, too:devil: If it's not Kim then I'd like Hingis to win.

people seem forget that amelie lost in the first round in sydney last year and still won the ao, so dont count her out.

Clijsters,Sharapova,Mauresmo* hot favourites
Jankovic,Na Li,Dementieva dark horses :p

*Amelie wasn`t at her best at the beginning of the YEC 06 and in two days she played like true No.1.. she was just tired in the final. I believe Amelie can get it together till AO.
Jelena is playing great tennis, Na will be tough and Lena had unluck and choked but has been playing well..

I`m not sure about others..Petrova,Kuzzie,Patty,Martina,Nicole...who else is there?

I absolutely don`t believe in Serena..she can`t do any damage at this year`s AO..she will lose in some 2nd round IMO

I quite agree..I believe this year`s AO will be a different one from the past years for Lena.
How come I can`t see Kim beating Amelie?

Probably Kim and Maria are the favorites. Jankovic is a big threat but you can't base anything from a win against Mauresmo. It was clear that Momo wasn't at her best. If she beats Clijsters in Sydney then, she could be one of the favorites. The difference is that Jelena has yet to win a slam while Maria has 2 and Kim has 1 so nerves could be a question mark to Jankovic.

Maria-she doesn't need many matches to play well. Her determination alone can beat some players probably not the other top players but she is still a hot favorite. Last year she went to Melbourne having no preparations at all and with a chest injury and still managed to reach the semis.

Kim- when she's fit she can beat anybody.
