Nicole.. I don't know what to say. A DF to give the *5-4 break.

Another loss in a SF, another lost opportunity to win a title above Tier III.

Crushing loss.

I like Jelena so I'm happy for her... but still...

:yeah: Nice match. I thought Jelena would retire after the second set, since she had about two or three injury time outs. It boiled down to Jelena's mental toughness which just had the edge over Vaidisova's. Jelena is such a fighter- she is top 5 material! It finished on a really good rally. I think Vaidisova just made a few too many errors, but she wasn't far away from winning. Jelena seemed really exhaused in the final set, but she kept fighting and hitting the ball consistently.

Nikki

Way too many errors. She had 4 times as many winners as Jelena (22-5), but over double the amount of unforced errors.

Did anyone else see Jelena push a linesman out of the way? I like Jelena and all, but that was a bit .

Jelena's amazing movement won it for her in the end - I have no idea how she got some of them balls back on match point. Nicole couldn't finish with the half-court balls towards they end and she was waaaaaaay too erratic. In her penultimate service game she hit 4 amazing winners in a row from 0-15 then plays like shit to be broken a game later.

The winning streak continues... :woohoo::woohoo: Plz beat KFC.

Good job to both ladies. A lot of people expected Vaidisova to lose in straights so I'm glad she put up a fight. If she can cut down on her errors/double faults she certainly beat Jankovic.

I dont think Jelena will win OZ Open. As good as she is she wont be Maria/Kim/Mauresmo at their best. Even players such as Petrova and Kuznetsova can knock her out as can Hingis/Vaidisova (she beat both of them recently but it took her three sets and the sets were very close against Vaidisova so next time it can go either way).

I don't think Nicole's confidence is that low.

She beat Ana which was a big mental win for her.

I'm sure she knows how good of tennis Jelena's been playing lately and Nicole usually rebounds well after tough losses.

Oh no I didn't say Nicole's confidence was low...it was just average, maybe a bit above average. Jelena has won 9 straight matches now, including three top ten wins. She bageled Mauresmo in the second set (if you bagel Momo, you do it in the first set almost always. Momo does not go away.) No one's confidence is as high as Jankovic's right now.

Thirlling match. I don't think Jelena played as cleanly as she did in her previous matches in terms of hitting winners, but her defense was amazing. The last point pretty much epitomised the whole match. Give credit to nikki for that as well. She plays a game that doesn't give the opponent much chance to set up winners.

I reckon Nikki winning might have been a better result though. It's clear Jelena wants to win this tuornament, despite being physically worn out. She's got blisters, a thigh injury, and I think she had a back issue as well? Losing would have been a good excuse for some rest.

By the way, others might have noticed this already, but as an Aussie, I really only get to see these guys play once a year. And it looks like Nicole's grown up a lot since the last time I saw her. I remember at the start of her career she was a headcase, and mean to ballkids. Even last year, I saw her throwing her racket at 5-2 up against Daniela. But today she played in a much better spirit and stayed relatively composed against a player that must have been frustrating for her. As cheesy as it sounds, I'm kind of proud of her.

She continues to beat all the young pretenders just as she did last year.
So last year was no fluke.

Congrats jelena :clap2: :clap2: she just keeps getting better & better ever since she came out of that slump last year. two finals in a row for her in two weeks is a testimony to her that she is definitely a fighter & one to watch out for at the AO :yeah: she hit some great shots in the match & retrieved a lot nicole's shots that would of been winners against other players. just terrific :D

Nicole played great as well too :clap2: however she was inconsistent & made too many UF's which was due to Jelena's fantastic retrieving skills. Nicole just needs to learn to be more patient in the rallies & when she does she'll be a even better player. But well done on her good week in sydney :)

What a great match. Just some great tennis defence helped jelena winning this, she played unbelieveably defensively, getting so much back and making nicole hit the extra shot. Jelena is on a tear.

She's playing with the uncompromising last one standing commitment of Sharapova but has overlaid it with greater speed and athleticism. Add to that a more technically complete game and she will threaten any opponent (bar none) right now.

The splits are a rebound ace coping mechanism and she is waiting for new season's shoes which she believes will deal to the blisters.

I have watched her matches this year and after seeing her continually gesticulating rudely and impatiently to ball boys for delivering towels and balls late I thought she was bow-wow city from the neck up.

Then I listened to her match interviews and just adored her.

I think this could end up being a milestone victory for Jankovic. At the start of the third set she looked sweaty, tired and upset. She was complaining that her dress was too sweaty, she was questioning calls, this is a match she would have lost a few months ago, no question.

Especially considering Vaidisova looked calm and collected and focussed, and her balls were finding the lines....

But I guess Nicole got a little brittle towards the end, and seeing that enabled Jankovic to find a second wind and keep the rallies going, to patiently wait for an error from Vaidisova.

Thing is, she will always be able to look back at this as a match she properly grinded out, which should give her lots of confidence. I think she has a shot at the title, as Clijsters's devastating form against Peer and Pratt was in short supply against Li...

Congrats to Jelena, although i don´t like one thing she does, she complains about everything, she just doesn´t do that when she´s winning. There was a time when she lost the point that she was so irritated that she pushed the ball boy that was in front of her, she doesnt accept very well when she loses the points sometimes, even when her opponent is playing amazing shots. There was also point, where Vaidisova played the shot and it landed in the limit of the baseline and Jankovic continued the point and had chances to win the point, but she missed the last shot, and decided to complain just when she failed some shots after.
About Nicole, i have to say that she is one of the players that is impressing me more. Jankovic also in her speed and defending and shot selection, but Nicole can play such amazing shots and she reacts very well when she misses a shot, even when it´s in important moments, i think it´s very good , particulalrly if we remember that she´s 17. In my opinion she´s very good, she has big weapons, and it´s possible to see improvement on the things she wasn´t so good, so i think she´s going in the right direction to be a really good player.

I enjoyed watching this match. Jankovic was very impressive. If her back wasn't tweaking, I feel it would have ended 6-4, 6-4. She is officially a VERY dangerous player. I didn't mind the complaining. She was hot, slightly injured but she never stopped fighting. Great spirit out there as well as extremely sporting.

It is obvious that Nicole is improving but she makes some crazy errors. Her serve was a beauty to watch. She's growing up too. No tantrums! Unless I missed something! :D

Excellent match up.

What a great fighter. That is the main reason why she deserved to win.

Tried to post here yesterday, but the board was busy, presumably with dozens of posters clicking away at the "refresh" button and at the smilies panel while following some riveting doubles match at the livescoring threads.

Anyways

JJ could have won this so much easier, and so much quicker. Against Mauresmo she dictated the game, constructed the points and gave a performance for the ages [whereas Golovin had tried to hit through Mauresmo - not smart]. But on this match she never attempted to move Nicole around, to open angles, even to hit her trademark DTL BH winners. She just let Nicole take over the points and waited for her error. But since Nicole was neither particularly impatient nor particularly erratic (at least for her standards), the points went on and on and on and on, with JJ on windscreen wiper duty throughout. At Linz this game plan didn't work, here it did - barely.

Still, sometimes one plays top 5 tennis, and sometimes one plays like the best retriever in the world. Whatever works.

JJ managed to serve well (taking risks with her second serve) during most of the match - she may not serve bombs, but places her serve very well, and Nicole always has a hard time returning it - partly because she goes for too much on the ROS (but on this match she realised that, stopped going for winners and tried to just get the ball in play deep enough - 2006 Nicole would probably continue netting BH returns until the end of the match).

Nicole's serve on the other hand wasn't quite as unbelievably huge as it was on their previous match in Linz, but it's almost always a big weapon, and helped Nicole to dig herself out of several tight situations.

JJ kept playing into Nicole's BH - but Nicole's BH falls apart when her opponent puts real pressure on it, hitting deep and hard and not giving Nicole time to react; JJ merely pushed the ball back into it by hitting some loopy FHs (JJ's FH has improved and it did damage vs Mauresmo, but I guess it will never be a knockout weapon), and almost unfailingly saw them returned, only twice as fast.

Nicole's BH has indeed improved - it hasn't been tested against a heavy hitter with a powerful BH or in-out FH yet, and I still think it will fall apart when that happens, but that's not the issue. Last season, even when playing against players without much firepower (say Sugiyama, against whom Nicole played a set of the finest tennis I saw by any player in 2006 - only to lose the match  ), Nicole's options on the BH side were quite limited. Now, if given the time, she can move the ball around with it, and has even begun to hit it inside-out to open further angles (it still looks awful though, but then again so does Maria's FH).

Nicole didn't seem to get too frustrated with her inability to hit through JJ and win quick points, and played well until the end. Even though Nicole clearly isn't solid enough to challenge for major titles, she's playing well enough to keep herself afloat in the #10-15 range. But I don't care much for that as long as she keeps providing matches as entertaining as this one.
