Not a good day at the office for Ana at all. But congrats to Nicole.

Nicole was the better and more consistent player. I thought Ana was a bit agitated in the 2nd second. She lost her nerve falling behind in the 2nd. Well good win Nicole. Ana hope you can still improve your game.

Ana played an excellent opening game to go up 1-0 in the first set. I believe she even held at love. It was all downhill from there. Her first serve wasn't there for most of the important points while the double faults were. She is capable of FAR better than the nonsense she put on court today.

C'mon Ana. Wake up and take the next step.

Great win for Nicole, I was pretty unsure on this match.

Just a question. Does anyone know Nicole's winning percentage against players ranked below her? I know she lost to a lesser ranked player for the first time last year, but she's been pretty comfortable in matches she should win otherwise.

I thought it was a pretty drab encounter despite the crowd trying to inject some life into it. Nicole won with plenty to spare. She has a very clever service game.

Ana's game is maybe a bit rusty (the forehand looks wild). Hopefully more matches will fix that.

Nicole was so dedicated and desirous...
Ana, the same fragile mentality...

Some breathtaking winners from both especially in the first set. Nicole's consistency won the match. THe second set was very sloppy from Ivanovic.
I don't see any improvement in Ana's game. She's basically playing the same as in 2005 or even worse. Her serve let her down many times and she insists on pounding every ball and taking the ball early. Not that this strategy is wrong but she missed way too many returns on Nicole's second serves this way. It's important to have the first strike against Nicole but she should have been more restrained. Also went to the net at the worst possible moments. Nicole's game certainly matured a lot. Not quite sure if her serve is just as good as it was before she changed her service motion but it's definitely still consistent.

Hmm, off the top of my head who have beaten Nikki who were ranked lower :-

Morigami, Azarenka, Safarova, Castano, Li, Jankovic, Sugiyama and Golovin.

There were only two rallys in the whole match, if I remember well. It was a short match.
Nicole: excellent first serve, excellent angle changes.
Ana: smashing forehands but too many u.f.errors. Too emotional (she was almost crying throughout the whole 2nd set).

I really didnīt like the way Ivanovic played. Is she inteligent? If she is, she really doesnīt seem... because she enters in the court just to try to do shots with lots of power, but the problem is that she canīt control the power and the other is that itīs everything going wrong and she doesnīt realize that she has to slow a bit in her shots. I think she has been seeing too many Karolina Sprem matches... lol.But this last results for her after her words "i can beat all these players" must be really frustrating, maybe she will learn and next time she wonīt be so confident. Vaidisova gave her a good lesson.
Played very nice.

I was watching the match last night at the Sydney Olympic Park and have to say that while the Serbian supporters were quite annoying at times (cheering Vaidisova's faults and errors), they added a lot of atmosphere to the match that was missing in the men's match following that. Can't believe they are not putting at least one women's semi-final on the evening session tonight!

Evil prevails.

Nicole would not be denied the chance of losing yet another SF, and of completely screwing my tennis-pool.com ranking for the week.

On the forecast thread, I gave 80-20 to Ana. I had heard that Ana had blitzed Petrova, and fully expected Nicole to implode - one must not forget that she finished last season with several meltdowns, including a bagel by harmless Golovin. She had steamrolled Danka on the 1R, but Danka is Nicole's bitch anyway.

Anyways

Relatively poor quality match - if due allowance is made for the slower surface, this was even more extreme than Maria vs Ana at Linz, if that is possible.

Nicole seemed calmer and more confident than Ana - as if she entered the match fully expecting to win - and didn't let the grating Serb-Australians get to her.

Ana on the other hand seemed distraught (at least for her standards), and overwhelmed by the setting (packed evening session, fans loudly cheering for her, increased publicity and expectations as of late), much like she was against Serena at the USO.

The game itself:

Nicole played smartly, rarely went for too much, opened good angles with her serve and FH, and mostly let Ana bury herself in shanks, mishits and DFs (for instance, when she noticed Ana's FH was spraying shots all over the place, she went for it on a few points, and won some FH vs FH contests; and she wasn't above using awkward looking - but effective - slices and other junk to discomfit Ana on occasion). She still went for too much while trying to convert BPs, and in the end it was Ana who giftwrapped her most of those. It's true that nobody is really "in control" when playing against an opponent who can finish a point with a single shot, but Nicole came close.

Ana's game began to unravel almost immediately, and her performance as a whole was wildly inconsistent. She hit about as many big winners as Nicole, but made many more needless UEs. By the middle of the second set she was beginning to despair (never the most discerning of players when it comes to stringing shots together on a point, she stopped thinking and began rushing the net at the worst possible moments), by the last two points she looked as if she just wanted to get out of there, and when MP down she was already teary-eyed.

Both players avoided each other's FHs during the (few, short) rallies, and Nicole won most of the BH vs BH contests. Both also served into each other's BHs to avoid having all their serves blasted away - and Nicole's BH ROS was superior to Ana's throughout. Of course two of the most aggressive returners in the game would inevitably have a go whenever possible at their opponent's serve - and again Nicole was more effective in that.

Other factors:

I) Nicole's serve was more effective than Ana's because it was (on this match) more reliable and less predictable, and either her second serve is less attackable or Ana was just having a bad day on the ROS department. Actually, Nicole accurately read and blasted away Ana's serve more often than her opponent attacked hers with success - no mean feat. Ana on the other hand took huge risks with her second serve to avoid Nicole's aggressive ROS and as a consequence ended up hitting far too many DFs (before the match, I though that Nicole would be the one forced into doing this)

II) Nicole was somewhat better at absorbing Ana's power than the opposite; she's more athletic, moves a bit better and defends herself adequately on the FH side now. Ana's footwork on the other hand was very poor.

III) Nicole's BH, which looks godawful and is prone to just fall apart, held out throughout the match

That's a thing that I don't get. She's a smart girl, but not showing it ON COURT. She's able to control that power.
Maybe she's thinking too much, maybe it's pressing. Just something in her head. She has the material to be a great player, but then you have to use it the right way.
