View Full Version : Fuming over Seven's Coverage of Medibank International

tennisbear7
Jan 10th, 2007, 05:07 AM
Australian viewers share my pain.

I am quite annoyed by the fact that Seven's coverage of this event is so disorganised and sketchy.

They left today's coverage during Jankovic vs Mauresmo due to "programming commitments" and what do we see after? M*A*S*H. OMG.

Earlier today they said that we would see Ivanovic vs Vaidisova and Guccione vs Melzer. And as they were leaving us they said that we'd only see Guccione vs Melzer!

Argh! Seven should pick up their act.

I agree with you sort of. The whole "programing commitments" is complete bs, it always goes overtime, i just don't know why they don't extend their coverage to six, it's just stupid. Very rarely will 4 matches go 6 hours or less.

About tonight, maybe they will show some of Ivanovic/Vaidsova in highlights maybe, but i think the should just stick to showing one match (which would be the Guccioen match, i know) instead of confusing the viewers.

I do agree that their medibank coverage is unorganised and disjointed but it's better than nothing. Their coverage of AO is great anyway.

The main thing that disappoints me today is the night time programming.

I think it starts at 10:30 pm? And tonight is such an awesome schedule as well

Ben.
Jan 10th, 2007, 05:45 AM
Yeah i know how all you guys feel. I'm totally annoyed that they cut off the coverage at five just to show M.A.S.H. & Deal or No Deal  I mean they can show these shows another time for Gods sake! :ras: plus not showing the night matches live is even more annoying :( i mean what they're gonna show t'nite on channel 7 is just crap tv shows that you can see another time.

I should go on the channel 7 website & send them an email bout their poor broadcasting of the tennis.

I've brought up this idea in regards to 9's coverage of the US Open.

Howabout we all send letters threatening to watch the Today Show as opposed to Sunrise if this keeps up?

Sharapova's_Boy
Jan 10th, 2007, 05:52 AM
Let's see.

We got full matches of Hass-Roddick, Federer-Stepanek and Blake-Hanley.

Then 8 games of Jankovic-Mauresmo, and most likely the full Guccione-Melzer match tonight.

Fair much? :weirdo:

aussie_fan
Jan 10th, 2007, 05:54 AM
I wouldn't expect seven to show the night matches live. It's not like AO and that being a bigger event and wouldn't expect that much focus for a normal tour tournament anyway. Sadly, they can't have live night tennis every week.

I made a thread about this because it pissed me off on day one how they didn't show any of Daniela vs Nicole. :( So I know how you feel and agree with you. Their coverage of Sydney sucks. I didn't even watch tennis much today, except for the start of Jankovic vs Mauresmo. And that's big for me considering I usually watch every day during this time of year because it's the only time I get to see tennis.

they have gone backwards in recent years

with the Kooyong event they used to show 1 match live and the other on delay late at nite

I was so furious in the way that they treak the viewers here with contemt.

Their Australian Open coverage is not that good some years

i.e last year they never showed a match on Vodafone Arena LIVE yet Foxtel could not show that court live either as Seven have the LIVE rights to it :fiery: :fiery:

Okay, so the Guccione match goes for 1 hour and 12 minutes.

10 bucks says that they'll somehow draw it out to fill the entire 2 hour time slot.

Sigh. I just wanna see Nikki's match. :crying2:

Ben.
Jan 10th, 2007, 10:58 AM
yeah, but the chances of that are slim i'm afraid due to channel 7's poor coverage lately :fiery:

Yeah I know, it's a crap channel. The constant advert interruptions are so irritating, I get so disorientated. And scheduling the start of coverage at 10:30 is pathetic. Could we not do without Air Crash Investigation or Deal or No Deal or whatever? Who watches those shows? I hate Channel Seven with a passion.

I wish ABC would take over coverage for the Australian summer.

What about JA? Every freakin' Australian is his darkhorse/favourite to win everything. Hit a let cord? The Aussie hit a powerful shot, that's why it dropped in, no luck about it.

But I do like the addition of Todd Woodbridge to the commentary team. I don't want to completely diss Channel 7 here

I was fuming this morning because they were showing the Kooyong exhibition instead of an actual tournament in Sydney!
I was waiting for the Federer match to finish so I could see Kim vs Peer, but Roger had to choke and draw it out for as long as possible so they crossed to Sydney late.
I normally like watching Roger, but surely the Sydney tournament is more important than an exhibition!

I agree about showing stupid reruns of MASH too, and tonight they had to show a stupid reality show about cheating rather than the women's night match!

JA is the worst! Recently he was commentating a match, and he said he agreed with the view that left handers shouldnt be able to serve on the ad court on game points because they have an unfair advantage with their left handed swinging serve. And he said this seriously

I actually like Channel 7, their coverage of Medibank International is crap, but the amount of hours they give to AO is incredible, they pretty much give away two weeks completely just to the tennis, they do a fairly good job of it as well (excluding John Alexander). Channel 7 seem to have all my favourite tv shows but that's not the point here i guess.

Haha I noticed that too. Though it's not as a bad as SBS with their "Maria Sharah-pava".
They do this because they try to pronounce names as they are said in their native tongue, unfortunately no one has told them that "Maria Sha-RAPP-UVAH" is wrong.
what about Jo Griggs Joosteen ;)
This one brings back specific memories, me & my sister used to detest hearing Joosteen, it drove us insane, thankfully Joosteen will not be around to be talked about this year.
It's funny to think I used to like that "Chasing Cars" song by Snow Patrol but they've totally got carried away with that advert for Grey's Anatomy. It's actually going on right now, I can hear it.

JA pisses me off too. GET HIM OFF WOMENS MATCHES CHANNEL 7. He doesn't seem to know anything about the women's tour. John Barrett is much better :yeah: He's so much more knowledgable regarding the tour, and is so much more pleasant to hear.

What I don't get is
1. Why Kooyong and Sydney both don;t say it is one or the other- you can't televise us both. The event that wasn't picked would easily get picked up by channel 10 or 2.

Well apart from Hopman Cup they have all of the Australian Summer of Tennis. And that's how they like to advertise and promote it, by claiming that they bring you the "Australian Summer of Tennis". So if another channel was to show an event, they wouldn't be able to make that claim anymore.

They showed the second set of Ivanovic Vs Vaidisova last night after the Chris match.

I'm annoyed with all free to air and foxtel sports channels.

We have so many tennis tournaments in Australia and channel seven is the only one covering any of them. Playing bits and pieces, only finals, going from one tournament to the other. Seriously there must be something wrong with Tennis Australia's relationship with the others.

Foxtel gain an extra sports channel, they advertise as if they show so much tennis, WTA tour etc but they don't show shit and they don't really have anything to show at the moment. Why can't foxtel pick up Hobart or something, no instead they show figure skating or some bullshit.

Jan 11th, 2007, 01:44 AM
the sad fact is that unless they can guarantee big audiences they aren't going to put the money into showing live tennis and interfer with their usual programming. It's seems simple that they should show it for an hour more but there's probably freaked out the old people and bludgers will switch from their stupid game to channel nine's even stupider gameshow or heaven fordin even watch ten news!

Prime time advertising is expensive and they probably can't justify. they'll be pretty much cutting their entire programming for two weeks with the Australian Open and we must remember there are some people who don't like tennis and the prospect of watching Ivanovic versus Vaidisova means absolutely nothing to them.

Having said that generally hate channel 7 in almost every way so feel free to bash them. Especially Kochie  biggest....tool....ever (in a bad way)

I can't believe we're gonna miss both semis because of a stupid exhibition.

Why can't foxtel pick up Hobart or something, no instead they show figure skating or some bullshit.

Because they simply cannot justify it financially. Sure Hobart got a good field this year but look who the main sponsor is "Morilla" - i don't know what that is and i'm sure most other Australians don't. Setting up he infrastructure to show live sport is expensive - espeicially in such remote places as Hobart. There simply wouldn't be the advertising revenue to show and to be honest i doubt their would even be much demand for it outside tennis enthusiasts.

We really do alright in this country i think to be honest considering tennis is not a sport we're obsessed outside of Aussie making grand slam finals.

I remember about 6 years ago when Canberra was on Fox Sports.. Don't see why they can't show Hobart especially with the new channel, and the lineup they had this year!

yep they showed it for one year and then got rid of it because hardly anyone watched it and there were no sponsors. and now the tournaments gone.

FOXTEL can't show alot of stuff because of laws which say all sports coversge much go to the commerical networks 1st. FOXTE#L get larry leftovers.
Did you aklso know that of thesport events that are bought form the commerical channels, only 30 % are shown live and only 48% are shownm at all. It is friggin crap!

Federer won 7-6, 6-7, 7-6, so if you're in the second, it's going to take a VERY long time.

How boring, the last two days have all been ATP except for 8 games of Jankovic-Mauresmo! :tape:

We get Federer again...we just saw him for about 2 or 3 hours yesterday.

They do get huge ratings from showing the tennis though. I believe it helped shows like Lost and Desperate Housewives get big audiences when they shoved adds down everyones throats about them during the tennis a few years back. So if they benefit from showing the tennis and getting there upcoming shows a lot more exposure through advertising, I wish they would sometimes let the tennis interupt normal programs in "return".

It's bad enough when a match in Sydney is interrupted but worse is when they interupt matches like the Davenport/Dechy Aus open semi a few years back. They also cut short Kim/Mauresmo and fucked up the screening of Kim/Hingis I think.

Not sure about Kim/Martina (from what i remember it was ok), but i know that for Martina's first round match they didn't show the opening games because of Home and Away

From memory, I think Kim/Hingis was going to start at 5.30 but they "couldn't" interupt the news so they held it back to 7.30.
Then Federer/DAvydenko which started at 7.30 was shown after Kim/Hingis so they didn't show any live tennis that night

yeah, showing more tennis live in the summer is a benefit i agree with you on.

and they had to cut short davenport/dechy, clijsters/mauresmo & clijsters/hingis due to the news.

not to mention years where they would always show Hewitt or Phillipousis or Arthurs that would be 5 sets of just serve fests

or Hewitt where each point is a marathon and goes ages. and in the meantime we miss like 2-3 good womens matches on other courts :o

Well if they benefit from showing the Tennis as I described above, they should be obligated to show the big matches regardless of the news. They should give the rights to someone else or the schedules for womens semi-finals should start earlier. It happens year after year.

It was more like Hewitt's fault and that caused double episode of H&A! Seriously, they should hold H&A until the rating season again!

Seven use the Australian Open as launching pad for their new shows for 2007. it worked realy well for the last few years and they will be doing it again this year. witht he way it helps them, you can't blame them.

I don't blame them. I've even got used to all the adds - they don't irritate me as much now.

But since they get that "lauching pad" for their shows from Tennis, it's even more annoying when they cut short grand slam semi finals or whatever.

They benefit from the Tennis and still treat Tennis fans like shit :D

And about the Hopman Cup: What was that all about when Shelly Horton went to that astrologer dude. That was lame. LOL.
