Next up for Sania will be (1) Chakvetadze or (7) Zheng. Both are scrappy, tough opponents so she's gonna need to play well. You can do it Sania, VIVA! :armed:

Oh no... I was so optimistic about Alicia. She had a pretty low serving percentage, especially in the first set. Oh well, better luck at the AO...

Congrats, Sania.

Dissappointing result. Alicia's serve is still too inconcistent so it seems.
Wouldn't surprise me if Sania reaches the final. She doesn't have any pressure. I can't remember her winning so many matches in a row last year. Good for her.

Why not? She had had an ordinary last season, she needs to prove a point on WTA cards.

Yeah I wouldnt say the pressure is off Sania, ever. Especially since I'm sure she still feels she has something to prove to the tennis world and to her legions of fans in her home country. She's a hungry competitor who wants to win every match. She wont take the SF lightly.

I think that pressure will be on her... She surely wants to prove to everyone that 2006. was just a bad year... And everyone will be expecting from her to do some serious damage now...

Still I'm sure that she will cope with it ;)

What I like about her is, she doesn't get overawed by better-known opponents. And more often than not, puts up some fight. But I hate it when she plays against a retriever. She likes aggressive opponents.

I think they'll both be really difficult for Sania, they can both defend well and run fast. If I had a choice I'd rather she played Zheng though, Chakvetadze has more of an offensive arsenal along with her good defense.

Also, Mirza's beaten Zheng before and took a set in the Asian games loss too. She's probably more familiar with Zheng's style.

Unofficial H2H against Zheng is 1-1(both those games went to three sets.)

Actually She should have won the Asian games match but run out of gas in the third.(She played 7 matches(4 singles 2 mixed and 1 doubles) in Four days during that week. It was hetcic tournament for her To be honest with you.). Anyway those H2H records doesn't count. It is new match for her and i hope she enjoys herself tommorow. Zie is tough for sure but she is a beatable opponent. Hope Sania goes her best.

Strategies? She was playing doubles only, the last full year. Wasn't that enough and you want her to learn some magic in these couple of matches. BTW, most of the doubles strategies don't really work for singles.

Fitness: Its a thing that *gradually* grows and Heath certainly is not gonna give her a pill that puts in all the fitness in a day. And looking back at the Asiad final (which was less than a month back), it concerns me for the all important Australian Open.

Well, more likely than not, she IS going to play the doubles. I was just throwing my concern. And its more of a tiredness than fatigue, as you rightly said its the start of the season. Hope she remains in great shape and gets a good draw at the Australian Open. And again, those days off at AO are utilized for scheduling doubles/mixed :( C'mon Sania, show everyone at AO that you can play some tennis.

She became a big server now. Anyway she learned to improve her serve from Oprandi's match. Molik and Sania served the same amount of Aces and Df's. But Sania's crucial break in the first set is the turning point in this match. Sania powerfull returns and groundstrokes must have bothered Alicia. Anyway I hope Alicia gets sone good run at AO. :yeah:

Hope it grows on her. Today, her serve wasn't really tested or came under any pressure. Its the pressure games, where I hope continues to get those 1st serves in. Yesterday it was 52% and today 67%. I'd be happy if she gets in around 65% mark more regularly.

Mirza ends Molik’s run

10 January, AAP - Alicia Molik has gone down in straight sets to India's Sania Mirza (pictured) in the quarterfinals of the Moorilla Hobart International.

Mirza won 6-4 6-1 against her doubles partner at the Domain Tennis Centre to advance to her first semi-final in an Australian WTA tournament.

After claiming the only service break of the first set in the seventh game, Mirza rattled off six straight games in the second to win in little over an hour against the Australian former world No.8.

Mirza, the world No.66, will play either Russia's Anna Chakvetadze or China's Jie Zheng in the semi-finals tomorrow.

Before that match, though, she and Molik will team up again in the doubles quarterfinals this afternoon.

Earlier, Russian Vasilisa Bardina booked her place in the final four after a gruelling three sets win over Colombia's Catalina Castano, 3-6 6-2 7-5.

Mirza ends Molik’s run

10 January - Aussie wildcard Alicia Molik’s run at the Moorilla Hobart International has come to an end at the hands of fellow wildcard and doubles partner Sania Mirza.

Mirza, who reached four quarterfinals and a semi last year, was lethal on her forehand side and was near faultless on serve. The world No.66 claimed a close first set and once the momentum was on her side never looked back.

She said it was difficult playing Molik, but was excited with the 6-4 6-1 win.

“It’s never easy playing against your doubles partner and a friend,” Mirza said. “I was happy that I served well, that was my main concern. I knew I had to hold my serve otherwise she would have been all over me. I’m excited that I’m in my first tournament of the year and I’m playing the semis.”

Molik, who has now recorded four singles wins already this season, was all praise for the Indian.

“I was very impressed by Sania today,” she said. “There’s no reason why she can’t be there on Friday.

“She played exceptionally well. She’s probably got one of the biggest forehands in the game. She definitely hurt me with that shot of hers.”

But Molik remained positive about next week’s Australian Open.

“(I played) three matches here in singles, I would loved to have won today but it didn’t go my way. It just means that I will get out there and work harder tomorrow, no big deal.”

Top seed Anna Chakvetadze dropped the first set of her quarterfinal encounter with seventh seed Jie Zheng but quickly turned the match around to post a 4-6 6-1 6-1 win.

She joined the qualifer Vasilisa Bardina , who continued her brilliant run with a 3-6 6-2 7-5 win over Colombia’s Catalina Castano.

She has to learn to handle such players. May luck be with her today, and yes, the serves too.

I think her skills at net are key. The last time i saw sania play (she lost to Bardina at Stanford), Bardina was running down all her shots, and if Sania could have put them away at net, she could have finished them off. Instead the rallies kept dragging on and the fitter player won.

Does anyone know if her volleying skills have improved? They weren't too good last time i saw her.
