best of luck to mariyana levova and jennifer claffey next week when they will be playing in a grade 4 junior tournament in sweden, its starting on the 8th of january 2006.

Irish no 3 rachael dillon is currently injured at the moment with an injured wrist, rachael is studying for her A levels in january. as far as i know she will be back playing fulltime about the the middle of january, so keep our fingers crossed!

best of luck also to some of our most promising juniors in ireland in 2007 who are training fulltime at the newly built national training centre at dublin city university, they are amy bowtell born in sept 1993, she currently has an european junior under 14 ranking of about 87 or 88, we also have lynsey mccullough born in march 1991, she has a european under 16 ranking, i cant remeber what her ranking is, nicola drummy and rachael daly are both at under 10 level, mariyana levova born in march 1990.

Best of luck to them all!:) :) :) :) :) :)

i do alot of research on the itf websites and they give you entry lists, thats where would tell you who is playing, i also go to www.tenniseurope.org and click on the junior tennis on top of the page and click on calender for whichever age group you are looking for, most of the time they would give you the tournament websites and work from there. another useful website would be www.tennisireland.ie

Here is an article from an Irish newspaper - Sunday Independent - 02/12/07.

Bowtell takes U16 title

Greystones player Amy Bowtell truck a major blow for Irish underage tennis when she captured the girls' singles U-16 title in the European Tennis Association event in Gothenburg yesterday, defeating Poland's Katarzyna Kaleta 6-3 5-7 7-6(7/4) in the final.

The victory of no.6 seed Bowtell, 137 in the European u-16 rankings, was additionally creditable as Kaleta was the top seed and is placed as high as 17 in the European U-16's. Three weeks ago, Bwtell finished runner up in an ITF under 18 event in Andorra, and next week she chases additional ITF U-18 ranking points in a tournament in Belarus.

Indenpendent - 12th December

HOT on the heels of the shock change of dates for the Fed Cup comes news of a major blow to Ireland's prospects in next year's competition.

Ireland team boss Garry Cahill has just discovered that he will be unable to call on Bulgarian-born Mariyana Levova for the seven-country event in Tallin, Estonia on the week commencing January 28.

Cahill had expected that Navan-based Levova would be cleared by the ITF to line out for Ireland. But his hopes were dashed on learning last weekend that the player's naturalisation process has not yet been formalised by the Irish authorities.

"Mariyana has been living with her parents in Ireland for four to five years now, and we didn't envisage that there would be any problems with her playing in the Fed Cup," explained Cahill.

"But apparently the immigration authorities in this country have not completed their work in Mariyana's case. And until that happens, the ITF cannot give clearance for her to play for Ireland in the Fed Cup.

"It's a major disappointment for us, as we feel that Mariyana would have had a lot to offer to the team," he added.

Promise

Since coming to live in Ireland, Levova has underlined her rich promise by winning the National U-18 title three times.

To add to Cahill's problems, Emma Murphy is currently sidelined with injury.

The Ireland supremo is hoping that Dubliner Rachael Dillon, who commenced a four-year tennis scholarship at San Francisco's Berkeley University last August, will be available to play in her third Fed Cup campaign.

On the plus side, national No 1 Kelly Liggan, who missed out in 2005 and 2006 because of tournament commitments has confirmed that she will be available for the Tallin event.

MARK BOWTELL produced the best performance of the four-strong Irish team in the ITF U-18 event in Minsk, Belarus.

The Greystones lad reached the semi-finals of the boys' singles, and Limerick's Sam Barry made the second round.

But Mark's sister Amy and Mariyana Levova suffered first round defeats in the girls' singles.

The Irish Federation Cup team has been announced and they are Kelly Liggan, Yvonne Doyle, Anne Mall and Amy Bowtell. Its an incredible achievement for Amy Bowtell as she is only 14 years of age and she is the youngest ever to play for Ireland. I think Amy is definitely a champion in the making.

I agree, what we need is one breakout star to draw the media's attention to tennis and get more young kids interested, some of which will hopefully go on to be great players themselves, which gets even more media attention, and so on. But at the moment the opposite is happening - no big names in tennis, so nobody pays attention to the sport, so most kids have no interest and so Irish tennis stagnates even more, and on and on. We don't even need a top 10 tennis player or Grand Slam champ or anything like that, we just need someone to make any kind of waves on the senior international circuit.

Look at Denmark at the moment. They've never had a big player, but I'm sure Caroline Wozniacki's success is helping to boost interest in the sport, and she hasn't even gotten to any major finals yet. But when are we going to get our Wozniacki

KournikovaFan91
Sep 9th, 2008, 06:26 PM
yeah and Ireland is roughly the same size as Denmark population wise, also look at Stephanie Vogt like she comes from such a small country

I think Amy is going backwards now she still has a low rank, Sam Barry was doing well for a while on the Junior circut

Oct 26th, 2008, 04:36 PM
Mariyana Levova has been playing a few 1ok & 25ks qualifying lately, qualifying for one 1ok. She got to the QF of the doubles competition at 25k Glasgow this week. Although she is still registered as Bulgarian :(

Rachael Dillon is playing college tennis in the US, where she has been doing quite well recently.

Kelly lost first round of qualifying in Québec.

So that's really it in womens tennis for Ireland atm. Bowtell, McCullough, Madill and other juniors aren't doing too well atm either, and last years promising junior Maria Morrissey is away to college.

Although there does seem some good younger players like Sinead Lohan. On the mens side there is also a good few players in Sorensen, Niland and McGee and some promising juniors like John Morrissey and Barry.

I wish the department of foreign affairs would hurry up and naturalise Levova

Also is the American college system that beneficial anymore, like what top players nowadays have come from that system.

We have quite good badminton players but no tennis players up to the same standard. We are like Denmark, kinda good at badminton and terrible at tennis but now they have Wozniacki so we just need a Wozniacki type player hopefully Levova.

Levova is on the entry list for the 1ok in Sunderland starting the 3rd Nov, also on the list is Amy Bowtell. Would be good to see Bowtell play here and see how she performes. It will be her first ITF Womens tournament.

Murphy hasn't played all year, I don't think she wants to continue playing ITF tournaments.

Mariyana Levova, Amy Bowtell and Emily Madill are all on the entry list for $1ok Jersey starting the 10th Nov. They are all quite far down on the entry list so I doubt they will play esp. Madill and Bowtell.

Bowtell is also on the entry list for 2 $1ok's in Spain on the 3rd and 1oth Nov. I think she would be better going to Spain as she would have more of a chance making the qualie draw.

Kelly on the list for $5ok Auburn next week

She is also not in the quali draw for the 1ok in Spain :o

omg i assumed she would make finals in Andorra it was hardly a tough tournament. I think she should have registed for El Menzah in Tunisia because she would have automatically made at least qualies and she could get there easily from Barcelona since she was in Andorra.

I think Levova is more of a prospect rather than Bowtell.

I was very disappointed with Amy's results this year. What kind of potential does she have? Maybe she is a late developer. There is a tournament on in Norway next week for under fourteens, Sinead Lohan and Nicola Drummy are playing there, so best of luck to them!

And why is it taking so long for Mariyana Levova to get an Irish passport?

Levova took Bogdan Junior number 5 to 3 sets in Sandanaski recently

She has a lot more hope because she isnt Irish which in turn means probably more committed and will stick at it longer.

Amy wont play during her leaving cert and therefore will drop out of the rankings that is what happens with loads of Irish athletes in all sports

I was very disappointed with Amy's results this year. What kind of potential does she have? Maybe she is a late developer. There is a tournament on in Norway next week for under fourteens, Sinead Lohan and Nicola Drummy are playing there, so best of luck to them!

Also I have just noticed that we have two Tennis Europe under fourteen tournaments next year, we used to have one>

Yeah I'm hoping Lohan will be become a great player for Ireland in the future from what I have read about her.

That's good that Tennis Ireland are starting to have more younger events like U14s.

I really dont think Bowtell will ever become a player that is even Liggan's standard

Well she is only 15 and Kelly didn't even really play any juniors or ITF's at that age, so there is always time to develop more.

To be honest I reckon ever since Bowtell got selected to play for Ireland in this year's federation cup, i have a gut feeling it went through her head, she might have got a bit carried away. Have you ever seen Bowtell play?

I know when I seen she was selected for the squad I thought she must have been a top player in the making, but she hasn't produced any results like that all year really.

I'm more hopefully of our Boys especially John Morrissey.

10K Benicarlo, Spain - Clay (8th Dec.)

Madill - 191 alt
Bowtell - 199 alt
Levova - 211 alt

I really think they should try and travel a bit more, European tournaments always have tons of entrants.

For example there is a 10k in Havana (1st Dec) with a qualifying draw of 64 and no alternates on entry list.
Then another 10k in Havana the next week with a small entry list. I suppose the travelling is a bit much but our Male players are always all over the world but the girls stay in western europe.

According to the Tennis Europe rankings, Sinead didn't win. It doesn't really matter though as winning would only have been worth 15 points and Sinead already has 15-point results that aren't being counted towards her total because she's done so well elsewhere :) Even without winning the singles she has moved up to 36, with the top 30 just 20 points away.

polly
Dec 11th, 2008, 08:51 AM
how would she 15 points and she should have got 30, the rankings system are complicated

orka_irl
Dec 11th, 2008, 03:43 PM
The rankings count the best five singles results and the best two doubles results. In doubles, a win would have given Sinead 15 points - BUT she already had 2 wins worth 15 points each so a Gothenburg win wouldn't have changed her best two doubles results. But in singles, Sinead's 5th best result before last week was worth 15 points - so when she won 30 points for reaching the semis last week, that singles 15-pointer isn't counted anymore because she has a new 30-pointer to count.

In points, her best 5 singles results before Gothenburg gave her 60 + 30 + 20 + 20 + 15 = 145 points. Plus 15 + 15 for doubles = total of 175 points.

After Gothenburg where she won 30 points, the old 15 points singles result can be discarded and her points are now 60 + 30 + 30 + 20 + 20 = 160 points. Plus 15 + 15 for doubles = total of 190 points.

polly
Dec 11th, 2008, 05:31 PM
i dont really agree with the rankings system, they should get the full amount

Tipp
Dec 11th, 2008, 09:26 PM
You mean every tournament they play should count towards their total? That would end up rewarding those players whose parents/clubs have the most money to send them to tournaments every other week, and a player who goes to 10 tournaments and never goes beyond the quarter finals could end up ranked higher than someone who was only sent to three and won them all.

Its great to see the junior tennis in ireland is improving all the time, if we could a few more amy and sineads we would be doing very well and also it will be interesting to see sam barry and john morrissey play in australia.

I think since the full time squads have being set up at the national tennis centre at dcu, irish tennis has being making great progress. What do you think of the whole setup, what can you see in 10 years time??

Yeah I hope they can both qualify for at least one of the Grade 1's and it would be great to see if both of them can make the main draw of the Aussie Open.

Yeah there does seem to be an improvement in Irish tennis lately, but I don't really know enough about the system to see how many good players it can produce. What do you think of our future hopes?

Also good to see McGee, O'Brien, King, Farron-Mahon and Glancy on the lists for quite a few futures at the start of the year.

I wonder why Barry withdrew, it would have been a great opportunity for him and he wouldn't have had to play qualies either.

Oh, that sucks. But, you never know, with travel to Australia from Ireland being as difficult as it is, it may have been as simple as missed flight or something

As far as the girls are concerned, Amy seemed to make a little improvement towards the end of year and is over a year younger than Sam or John so she still has plenty of time to develop. I wouldn't hold out much hope for the coming months, though - if my maths are correct she turned 15 in September last year, which would make her very likely to be studying for her Junior Cert this year. I wouldn't expect too much of Sinead yet, either, if she does move on to the U18 ITF circuit. The gap between the calibre of player she'd meet at an amateur U16 Irish-only event versus the U18 circuit is massive. To put things in perspective, the number 1 U14 player is only ranked around 900 on the U18. I have every confidence that Sinead will have success in the future, but hoping for it to come this year is probably optimistic.

A random other bit of information: I was googling for info on the Irish juniors and found out that John Morrissey is actually a full-timer at Justine Henin's tennis academy. Click here to see their list of full-timers. (http://www.6senstennisacademie.com/academie/en/joueurs.php) While it's encouraging that he was picked to join them, it means his success can't be attributed to Tennis Ireland's efforts, which is unfortunate. Also a member of the academy is Irina Kromacheva, the last girl to beat Amy in 08. Unbelievably, she (at 12 years old) already has her own website (http://www.eng.khromacheva.ru/news/news_82.html). In the story about her recent ITF title on the site whoever is writing says that Amy is over 190cm and has a good serve. I think. Their English is pretty broken.

I know I don't expect too much from Sinéad in U18s next year but I think she can win some matches. The top U14 junior in the rankings is Sachia Vickery, who at 13 is already 91st in the world.

Never knew that Morrissey was a member of Henins academy, that's great that he is learning from a former world number one :D

Wow 190cm that's about 6"2 at 15

Vickery is an American player. Sorry, when I said the top player is ranked 900 I should have specified I was going by the Tennis Europe U14 rankings, in which Petra Uberalova (SVK) is number 1.

As for Amy's height, here's the quote:

In the semi-Irina waited Bowtell from Ireland. High under 190 with a good serve, she has had the greatest resistance to the account 6-2 6-4.

Doesn't make much sense but I'm not sure what else the 190 could be referring to. I initially assumed they used "under" where they meant "over" but on second thought it could mean "just under 190cm".

Here, judge for yourself:

http://www.tennisireland.ie/userfiles/Image/Database/large_08091230.jpg

First of all, Poor Amy with the closed eyes. But, yeah, she's taller than nearly all the fully grown men in the picture, so I'd say 6"2 isn't too far off.

I wish that would happen with Greece. I wish we would have both quantity and quality players, like the US or France or Russia or the Czech Republic, or maybe just quantity like Germany,Australia and Ukraine. Realistically, we could only have like 15 players at max. ranked at once. I really want to have Alexis Prousis USA transfer, but I doubt it would happen.

Sticking to Irish tennis, what's up with Kelly Liggan? Her rank has dropped a lot. Injury?

Tipp
Jan 6th, 2009, 09:36 PM
Who knows? The papers here never give any updates on her. I doubt it's injury though, as her results were pretty consistently poor last year. Also, she only played one doubles tournament. So, given her age, I'm guessing it's more a case of winding down her commitment to tennis.

That sucks about Mariyana, but she was pretty unlikely to be accepted to any of those anyway wasn't she? Do you just sign up for everything and hope that sooner or later there are enough withdrawals to get you in?

Also, upon closer inspection, both Lynsey and Mariyana appear to be clutching little envelopes aswell so maybe they got some kind of vouchers. I just hope to God they weren't for Boots.

Anyway, some good news from Australia:

I looked up those Aussies, and it's basically a dream first round. They must be a WC team as they're both ranked outside the top 600 and have never played together before. If they win they'll pick up 30 doubles points, which will knock a 10-point result off John's total.

EDIT: And they won 6-3 6-0 :)

Sinead Lohan playing Les Petite As :D

Great for her to be playing this tournament, it always has all the top U14 players in the world, and this year is no different with Vickery, Duval, Uberalova, Jeanjean, etc playing it. Unfortunately she has drawn Jeanjean in the first round. Good luck to her, it would be amazing if she beat Jeanjean

Kelly won her first qualie match, 0 & 3, but lost 6-3 4-6 7-6(4) to Elie in the 2nd round.

Your other post showed up fine for me, Tennis-Chick.

Poor Sinead, I thought she was gonna be one of the lowest ranked girls in the draw but looking at the list now she was actually very unlucky not to get someone closer to her own ranking. Oh, well, she's still in the doubles.

BTW, when do you have to stop playing U14 events? I just looked up the Tennis Europe site and her DOB is 10/02/95, so she'll be turning 14 in a fortnight. So I assumed this was gonna be her last U14 event but the No. 2 ranked girl, Putintseva, was born on 07/01/95 and yet she's still playing here. Maybe you get taken off the rankings at the end of the month you turn 14.

I dont really know much about U14 events, but it might be like the U18s wher you can play for the whole year you turn 14, which means Sinead stills has all of 2009 left.

I know, it was bad luck for her to play Jeanjean but Im sure it will give her alot of confidence knowing she can stay kinda tight with one of the top players in the world in her age group.

Sam Barry up to 95 in the world rankings :yeah:

U14 is almost like ITF U18. In Europe, Sinead can keep playing U14 events until around October when the next Tennis Europe season starts. There's usually a gap in the calendar at the end of September and when it picks up again end-Oct, the new ages apply (so events will be advertised as '1996 & later'). In the US, it is full year 2009 so Sinead could still play U14 at Eddie Herr and Orange Bowl in November/December 2009.

$1ok Vale de Loba qualie draw is out, great to see Amy Bowtell as well as Mariyana in the draw:

http://www.premier-sports.org/downloads/premier_sports/ladies_open/19.pdf

Bowtell plays a player ranked in the #800s first so it will be a good test for her, unfortunately though they are both in the same section.

Good luck to both!!

Well I would just be happy if the two of them win their first matches and get the chance to play each other  Good luck, girls!

Also, Colin O' Brien made another Futures QF this week :)

Sinead lost her match 6-0 6-0  Wasn't expecting a scoreline like that, but de Vroome was the best player in the whole draw. McGreevy lost her match 6-1 6-1, and Sinead and Lynch lost 6-1 6-1
