Maria's 2006 Result

http://img458.imageshack.us/img458/9140/01zn5.th.jpg (http://img458.imageshack.us/my.php?image=01zn5.jpg)

1R - Beat - S. Kloesel - 6-2, 6-1
2R - Beat - A. Harkleroad - 6-1, 7-5
3R - Beat - J. Kostanic - 6-0, 6-1
4R - Beat - D. Hantuchova - 6-4, 6-4
QF - Beat - N. Petrova - 7-6(6), 6-4
SF - Lost - J. Henin-Hardenne - 6-4, 1-6, 4-6

So, Maria has suffered heartbreaking close losses in both the 05 and 06 Semis here. Hopefully this year her luck will change and she can take the title. Good luck Masha! ;)

Well I hope Justine makes an official statement soon since there's already major speculation about
1. Justine's marriage being over
2. Justine being pregnant
3. Justine being caught for doping

This probably makes me evil, but one of the first things that popped into my mind when I read that she had withdrawn was that things are now looking a whole lot better for Maria. :tape:

I think Amelie has to win both Sydney and AO to be #1, so these are quite odd developments coming up. This is so weird, I really want to hear from Justine what her issue is.

No Juju-Masha final. :sobbing:

I feel really sorry for Justine but at the same time this really opens the door for Masha and it will be great for her to be the number 1 seed.

I have to admit, the first thing I thought was also how this makes Maria's changes of becoming #1 again huge, who would have thought just a day ago that she could be #1 again so soon?!

Iím very curious to the reason for Justineís withdrawal though.

I'm sure Pova would prefer JHH played the AO, so she could beat her on the court. Pova is too competitive to want to back into something.

But JHH out does not mean that there isn't an incredible field for the AO: Ame, Kuzy, Nadia, Kim, Elena ... Not even mentioning Anna, Dinara, JJ, Ana, Nico ... Winning the AO will be massively impressive even without JHH.

I hope JHH returns to the tour real soon, though.

It's a very good draw, especially the first round, she should be fine all the way up to the SF, I think the 4R has the potential to be tough, and of course Kim in the SF waiting is probably the toughest opponent of the tournament, but that's getting a bit ahead of things, but overall, I like this draw :yeah:

I don't know about that. Jelena isn't as mentally tough as Maria. I think that if Maria had a chance to win, she would be less likely to choke than Jelena.

It would be interesting to see how Maria will approach Kim in a Grand Slam now that she's beaten her twice.

OK. I don't see her winning the French, but why not Wimbledon and the US Open? She has mastered both before, and she is in the best shape physically she has ever been in. Plus her confidence level has got to be way up with JHH out of the picture for at least the first tournament and even when JHH comes back, she is not gong to be at her best, so I think Masha can win three GS's this year. So that's what I'm putting on my board.

Après l'US Open, je me suis simplement dit : hey, tu viens de gagner l'US Open !

translation
Maria you reached twice semifinals here. How would you
judge your preparation compared to the last two years?

Much better than last year for example. Last
year, i came here without knowing if i could play
because of my injury. But now i had 5 or 6
very good weeks of training. i had a good rest after madrid and then
i trained quite intensively at home, i didnt travel, which is quite unusual
for me.

Not to play Sydney, as opposed to kim or other players before melbourn, was
it a plan for a good preparation?
i like to train and not to play the week before a slam.
Until now, it has been successful.i dont feel able physically to
play 4 or 5 matches and two days after start a slam during two weeks.
Not for now in fact. So it's true , i didnt play a lot of matches
but i feel good and in a good health, that's the most important.

What are your chances to add a 3rd slam ?
im very excited to start the year here! i reached twice the semis
and im ready to do better. it means going to final, and maybe winning.
im very happy i kept the confidence i acquired last year with my us open title.
And i hope to start this year with the same confidence.

Which are the principal elements of this confidence you say you kept after the US Open ?
I really do not think that that has anything to see with my game. It is rather a lesson which I learnt from my first victory in Wimbledon in 2004.
After this first title, it was strange, because I had the feeling while going on the court that I had to win everything
. And that, humanly, is quite impossible ( smiling).
That took a little time to me to understand that. It was mental. After the US Open one, I simply said myself:
hey, you have just won the US Open ! I could not really explain it…
It is right a question of having self-confidence, to be strong mentally.
I was unfortunately slightly injured in Moscow after Flushing, but finally, I was rather proud of me to have managed to keep this level for a long time.

You really think that confidence was something which was missing to you?
Not, I do not think that i necessarily lack f confidence .
But the difference, it is that today, and in particular here in Australia,
I feel that I can compete physically with any player.
Of course, it is not only a question of confidence, all also depends on the work which you provide.
I involved myself much, I did more physical training, I played much.
But more, important, it is that I succeeded in remaining in good health, which was not always the case before.
and we know the mental and the body are closely bound. ”

I wonder when her match will air on ESPN/2? It would be counter-intuitive to think that it will be the first match on, when the coverage starts, on 2-hour tape delay. Since the evening/early night and late night coverage windows are designed to carry live tennis, I think we can rule out seeing her tonight. I am HOPING they have sense enough to play it in the tape delay coverage at 3PM Eastern on Tuesday.

I remember that happened once, her third round last year vs. Kostanic was first on and she finished 6-0, 6-1 and she was done before ESPN2 started coverage. Heck, even Roddick finished his third round before ESPN2 started coverage, so they just showed the last match on RLA live and then showed Maria's match. So hopefully if Nadal and Kim finish quickly(I have doubts that Nadal will finish quickly though), we can see Maria tonight. If not, hopefully they will show it the next day.

Good point. Although, unlike Eurosport ESPN is notorious for cutting in and out of different matches, depending on what's happening on other courts, so I'd almost rather see Maria's match in a non-live time slot, where it will be guaranteed to be seen in its entirety. I guess we'll find out tonight.
