Well, there's only a few days left til we finally see Masha on court again. Anyone else excited by the prospect? :p

Maria's first event of 2007 will be the Watson's Water Champion Challenge in Hong Kong.* Hong Kong is an exhibition which runs from January 3rd - 6th.

The tournament consists of 8 players and they play from the quarters onwards.* Maria is the top seed and will play Yan Zi of China.* Maria has never played Zi before.* This match will be played on the 4th January and will begin at 18.30 Hong Kong time.

Maria will also be playing doubles here and will team up with Patty Schnyder of Switzerland.* Maria has never played with Schnyder before and this will be her first doubles match since Birmingham 2005.* The doubles event consists of 4 teams and play from the semis onwards.* Maria and Schnyder will play the #2 seeds Kim Clijsters of Belgium and Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russia.* This match will also be played on Thursday evening following a 30-45 minute break after Maria's singles match.

Good Luck Maria! ;)

The site for WWCC:

http://www.watsonswaterchallenge.com

The site talks about LiveWebcam so maybe we can watch the matches live!?!

There's a live scoreboard, too.

I am looking forward to seeing Pova back in action! Singles, of course, but also the doubles with Patty should be fun.

However, the Official FASHIONISTA of the Maria Mafia is not amused by this outfit. A lovely pullover top, but the poodle skirt belongs in the 1950's, Maria. Tsk tsk.

That's what she said after her match against Yan Zi :

"I was disappointed that I let her back in the match at 5-2," said Sharapova.

"Against the top players, if you let them back into the match they gain confidence really quickly and the match might be over," said Sharapova.
"When you are up two breaks the set should be on your side but that will come with just playing matches."

"It wasn't disappointing being broken; she has a really good return. She attacks the ball well after playing a lot of doubles, returning is a big part of that game."

"It was my first match of the year after not playing for a while and after just training it was a bit weird. Before the match I was talking to my coach and I said it was strange actually preparing for a match."

"When you step out on to the court it feels a bit different than what I've been doing. You have to adjust and it took a little time."

It's a win, yay. Glad about that one. Go Masha!

And for now I don't care about the outfit. For the AO I will care though :).

Yeah ;) . Just an exhib. right now. :) .

somehow i do think JHH not playing in AO it's not a good thing . even if Maria will win the AO everyone ,well most of all will say something like Justine didn't played and was to easy for Maria .same goes for nr 1 spot taking this spot and justine not playing people will say that was to easy for her ,something isn't right for a legitimate win you have to compete with the best ..ok you can shout at me now cause i said it .sorry but this is how things are [ in US OPEN ] when she beat amelie and justine she was the best cause she beat those two and it was a splendid win .so without justine playing maria has an advantage but it wont look good .

Ok I managed to see tiebreak of the second set from 4-1 for Maria. From that moment Maria played without any idea, Kim was dominating and Maria did nothing. It's an only an exhibition so it doesn't matter that much but I hope that she'll improve her tactics for AO

It's better, if Kim is going to have a win against Maria, that it's in Hong Kong rather than anywhere else.

Maria still seems a bit slack after the off-season. Her serve seemed to be back as it was in early 2006, getting broken far too often. Hopefully she can get her form brushed up by the AO.

Yess...really nice words and one of the commentators even said Kim was a bit teary eyed after hearing it. Kim also said Maria is a great champion and a nice girl...lol.

I saw the whole match on tv and I'm a bit dissapointed with Maria...not because she lost but because of her attitude on court. She didn't have her usual determination and intensity. No fist-pumping, slapping her thighs or skipping before she served. She just looked lost and moping around the court even the commentators said that :o

But the only light I can see in this is that it was still a tight match and a lot of winners from both sides even though Maria's attitude was a letdown  For sure we would not see this at the AO. Come on Masha :bounce:

I wonder if Yuri was on the court side. The camera surely didn't focus on him which was really strange

Masha...sorry for all the names I called you during the tight intense moment :p :hehehe:

Despite the loss I'm still proud of Maria for making it to the final of the exhibition. I'm sure after playing these few matches she'll be ready for the AO :D

What did you expect? It's an exhibition, I'm glad she didn't gave it a 100% for a match that didn't count.

This was the first time that I saw Masha and Kim do the double kiss at the net.
I think Masha wasn't so intense beacuse it was just an exhibition. I hope she does well at AO.

What did Masha say about Kim at the ceremony?

WATSONS WATER CHAMPIONS CHALLENGE (Hong Kong; outdoor hard; exhibition)
================================= http://www.watsonswaterchallenge.com/ (http://www.watsonswaterchallenge.com/)

MARIA SHARAPOVA [1,EF]:
qf + Yan,Zi [s], 7-5 6-3
sf + ELENA DEMENTIEVA [4], 4-6 6-2 6-3
_f - KIM CLIJSTERS [3], 3-6 6-7 (8/10)

A good start to the year, but Maria will have to step it up considerably if she is to be the one to take full advantage of Justine Henin-Hardenne's withdrawal from the Australian Open. We'd better hope that Clijsters lands in Mauresmo's half of the AO-draw instead of Maria's!

Okay, I'll admit it! I'm not a leg-man, but Maria's look amazing! ;)

Pretournament quote from Maria
------------------------------

"This tournament is the only one I will play before Melbourne, so it's an important event for me."

-------------
Quarter-final (Thursday 4th January)
-------------

+ MARIA SHARAPOVA [1,EF] d. Yan,Zi [s], 7-5 6-3

I had expected Maria to beat this #166-ranked doubles-specialist 6-1 6-2, but she made quite a meal of it, losing a double-break *5-2 lead in the first set, having to save three break-points at *6-5, and letting a 5-1* lead in the second set become 5-3* - where she needed all three of the match-points she had at 0/40.

Yan beat Nicole Vaidišová 7-5 6-3 in the Silver Group semi-finals, so perhaps she's ready to take on the world at singles now?

I always thought Yan was a Selesian (two hands on both sides), but the photos from Hong Kong show her hitting one-handed forehands, and www.wtatour.com (http://www.wtatour.com) currently describes her playing-style as "Right-handed (two-handed backhand)" - so perhaps she is a lapsed Selesian?

Maria quotes
------------

"It was my first match of the year after not playing for a while, and it's always weird coming back after just training for so long. You're never going to play your best tennis in your first match. Before the match, I was talking to my coach, and I said it was strange actually preparing for a match!

"When you're playing in front of a great crowd - a full crowd - when you step out on the court, it feels a little bit different from what you've been doing. You have to adjust, and it took a little time.

"It wasn't disappointing being broken - she has a really good return. She attacks the ball well after playing a lot of doubles - returning is a big part of that game.

"I was disappointed that I let her back in the match at *5-2. Against the top players, if you let them back into the match, they gain confidence really quickly and the match might be over. When you are up two breaks, the set should be on your side, but that will come with just playing matches."

Gold Group semi-final (Friday 5th January)
---------------------

+ MARIA SHARAPOVA [1,EF] d. ELENA DEMENTIEVA [4], 4-6 6-2 6-3

Second set: Maria *3-0 -> *3-2 -> 6-2
Third set: Maria *1-2 -> *3-2, 3-3* -> 6-3

I've often wondered why big servers like Maria and Nicole struggle as much as they do against Dementieva and her weak sliced serve, which produces so many double faults at key moments, and can only go to the right-hander's forehand. I think Dementieva makes up for it with her unusual ability to neutralise her opponent's initiative early in the rally, as well as superior fitness and a great crosscourt forehand.

Min Lee, Associated Press Writer:
>>>
Sharapova, ranked No. 2, was broken four times in the first set. She broke the eighth-ranked Dementieva, twice in the second set to go up 3-0, but lost the next two games. Leading 5-2, she needed six set points to win the second set.

The final set went on serve until the fifth game, when Sharapova broke for a 3-2 lead.

Trailing 5-3, Dementieva double-faulted to give Sharapova match-point, then netted a backhand.

Despite the loss, Dementieva put on an impressive display of clean, heavy hitting. Sharapova said the close match was good preparation for the Australian Open, which starts on 15th January.

Maria: "To be in that situation, to get out of it, to come up with a win, I think that's definitely going to help me. I felt like I improved as the match went on."

Gold Group final (Saturday 6th January)
----------------

- MARIA SHARAPOVA [1,EF] lt. KIM CLIJSTERS [3], 3-6 6-7 (8/10)

Second set: Maria *0-2 -> 3-2*, *3-3, 4-3*,, 5-4*,,, 6-6

Judging by the photos, it was windy during the final. This has favoured Clijsters over Maria in the past, because Maria has flat groundstrokes of flairsome power whereas Clijsters has muscular power - although Maria did play much better in the wind in 2006 (in winning Indian Wells and the US Open!).

shad9480: "I saw the whole match on tv and I'm a bit dissapointed with Maria...not because she lost but because of her attitude on court. She didn't have her usual determination and intensity. No fist-pumping, slapping her thighs or skipping before she served. She just looked lost and moping around the court even the commentators said that"

Min Lee, Associated Press Writer:
>>>
HONG KONG (AP) -- Belgium's Kim Clijsters kicked off her final season the best way she could on Saturday, beating Maria Sharapova 6-3 7-6(8) in the final of the Champions Challenge.

In a duel between the last two US Open champions, Clijsters rallied from 2-3 down to win the first set with an ace.

Sharapova, the world No. 2, missed a backhand to give Clijsters the break in the first game of the second set. The Russian used heavy hitting to break back in the fourth game to tie it at 2.

Clijsters' groundstrokes were more accurate, but she struggled with her serving. She double-faulted on break-point in the sixth game to give Sharapova a 4-2 lead.

At 6-6, Sharapova squandered a 4/1 lead in the tiebreaker with three consecutive errors.

Clijsters hit a backhand winner to save set-point; a mishit backhand by Sharapova gave her match-point, then the Belgian converted by charging the net and hitting a forehand volley-winner.

Sharapova, who is using the Champions Challenge as her only preparation for the Australian Open, said she isn't worried about her form.

Sharapova: "You're never going to guarantee a win in every single match. At some points in the match I felt a little bit flat. I'd like to get myself going. Other than that, I'm happy with the match I played here."

Clijsters, who has long said 2007 will be her final year on the WTA Tour because she wants to start a family, isn't approaching this season with the preoccupation that it's her last.

Clijsters: "I'm not thinking about that at all. It's not something I want to worry about until that last match is there. I know this is the last time I'm going to be here, but to me, my goal is to still improve my tennis."

Doubles: Semi-final (Thursday 4th January)
-------------------

- Maria Sharapova/Patty Schnyder lt. KIM CLIJSTERS/SVETLANA KUZNETSOVA [2], 8-9 (4/7)

One pro-set, played to 8 games rather than 6, with a tiebreak at 8-8.

This was Maria's first doubles-match since she and Maria Kirilenko lost in the first round of Birmingham 2005 - having won the doubles-title together at Birmingham 2004!

I would like to see Maria play more doubles, as her movement and judgement at the net aren't second nature yet, and this can let her down in singles. I know she needs to conserve her energy for singles, but perhaps the odd exhibition (such as this) or doubles-only tournament?
