Hingis returns for second serve
World No. 7 Martina Hingis will touch down in Queensland on Wednesday ahead of her second consecutive tilt at the Australian Women's Hardcourts.
The five-time Grand Slam champion has fond memories of the Sunshine State tournament after she used it to launch her comeback to tennis earlier this year with a run through to the semi-finals.
Since then, Hingis has recaptured her winning form and has propelled herself into the top 10 following title wins at Rome and Kolkata and quarterfinal appearances at two of the Grand Slams.
While Australian veteran Nicole Pratt has already earned her wildcard into the Royal Pines event, eight of her compatriots are yet to fight it out for entry into the main draw.
The first round of qualifying matches is set to commence on Wednesday with Sophie Ferguson and Lauren Breadmore expected to throw up a fierce challenge.
Wildcard playoff draw:
[1] Sophie Ferguson (NSW) v Nicole Kriz (NSW)
Emily Hewson (NSW) v Christina Wheeler (VIC)
Trudi Musgrave (NSW) v Alison Bai (ACT)
[2] Lauren Breadmore (VIC) v Shannon Golds (QLD)
The tournament kicks off on December 31 at Royal Pines Resort on the Gold Coast.
