And Venus is in the draw!!!

Her first round opponent is Akiko Morigami. Akiko Morigami is a Japanese Player, and she plays two handed on both sides. Venus will play here her first match of 2007. We might expect that Venus could be a little bit rusty, but like Serena Venus can grow into a tournament and step up her game, and after hearing promising words from Serena, we could expect a surprising run for Venus, but let's not put pressure on Venus. We take it one match at a time. Venus and Akiko have never played against each other, so this will be their first meeting. Goo Venus!

And Venus Williams has won her first match. It was a tough three set match for her, but at the end after 1 hour and 45 minutes. Venus Williams won 6-1 2-6 6-4.

Venus has successful return in Memphis

February 20, 2007

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) -- Venus Williams overcame struggles with her serve after a four-month layoff to defeat Akiko Morigami of Japan 6-1, 2-6, 6-4 Monday night in the opening round of the Cellular South Cup, a Tier III tournament.

She will face Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark on Tuesday night. The 16-year-old Wozniacki took three sets to beat Stephanie Foretz of France 2-6, 7-6 (5), 6-3 earlier Monday.

"I definitely was a little rusty, and the first set went so quick, it was fairly easy," Williams said. "In the second set, I started to think and I made a few errors. It seemed like I couldn't stop the errors. It was like a windfall of errors."

Williams was playing in her first tournament since October and had played only two matches since July because of the sprained left wrist. The 26-year-old right-hander, ranked 53rd in the WTA rankings, had withdrawn from two tournaments earlier this year, including the Australian Open.

She declared the wrist ready last week and said she was ready to return to the court. But Williams dealt with some long rallies and poor hitting during the 1 hour, 45 minute match. Those factors, along with an erratic serve, kept Morigami in the match.

"I'm really confident at this point," Williams said after putting the wrist through a competitive test. "I didn't really know what to expect in the first match."

Williams' serve, which contributed to her getting 60 percent of first serves in play, got erratic in the second set. Morigami broke Williams three times in the set, including the fourth game when Williams recorded five of her eight double faults.

Stamina may not have been as much of a factor as the mental part of her game. She said at times the focus wasn't where it should have been, particularly after the easy time in the opening set.

"I had a lot of things going on in my head, and it's just a matter of getting back to the game flowing," Williams said. "Sometimes I was feeling that, and sometimes I wasn't."

Morigami said when it was time, Williams showed she was the better player.

"She still was hitting a pretty good serve when she needed to, and that was the difference, I think," Morigami said.

Well now like I said Venus still has some rustiness in her game, but let's not forget that she needs matchplay. The first round was a good test for her, and she now knows where she is standing with her game. Once again let's not put pressure on Venus, and just enjoy the moment that Venus is healthy again and is able to play and is giving us once again hart-attack concerning matches/thrillers.

She will meet Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark, she is a youngstar but an upcoming talent. I've seen her play on tv during the Hong Kong exhibitions of this year against Yan I think. She has got a good backhand and net game. But her serve can let her down so can her forehand. But she will not give up without a fight, like in her first round match. Let's goo Vee!

Well Venus had once again a good test in her second round match and moved on towards the quarterfinals. Where she will meet Laura Granville. I saw her playing only once against Pratt at the UsOpen and she choked big time there. But it was also a long match. Today she was playing a tough three set match and the she won the last set with 7-5. But I don't know if she is very fit or feeling tired. Venus had a day of today, so that must be positive for Venus.

Well Venus is doing great so far, had once again a close two set match, but she is getting there. Her next opponent is Olaru. To be honest I have never heard of her, but she is obviously having a good tournament as well. She beated out an ill feeling S. Stosur in the quarters. I have found out that she was a junior finalist at Roland Garros once, so we shouldn't underestimate her at all. Let's goo Vee!

Venus Williams has made it to the finals, and she is very excited. But the job isn't done yet, she is going to face the number 1 seed of the tournament and that is Shahar Peer. This young lady comes from Israel and was in the military of Israel, so she is mentally strong. We saw that at this years Australian Open where she gave Serena a tough test. Peer has got solid ground strokes and a solid serve. And obviously nobody should take her for granted cause she is not for nothing the number 1 seed. Venus seems to shake rust bit by bit, but her game can always be better like she says. As long as she is enjoying it, and she won't be feeling the pressure. Let's goo Vee!
