Taylor Hicks' album sold a lot of copies last week, but he couldn't quite crack the top of the charts. Nor could he claim the title of best-selling "Idol" debut of 2006.

The "American Idol" winner's debut moved 298,000 copies in its first week of release, a pretty strong debut. It was good enough for the No. 2 spot on the Billboard 200 album chart, behind rapper Young Jeezy's "The Inspiration," which sold 352,000 copies its first week.

Hicks is the second contestant from "Idol's" 2006 season to see an album hit No. 2 in recent weeks. Daughtry, the band fronted by fourth-place finisher Chris Daughtry, entered at No. 2 in late November. No "Idol" contestant who didn't finish first or second has ever had as strong a debut.

Daughtry's first-week numbers are even a little better than those of Hicks; the self-titled "Daughtry" moved 304,000 copies in week one and has since gone platinum (1 million units shipped); it sits at No. 7 this week.

It was a good week for other former "Idol" contestants as well. Carrie Underwood's "Some Hearts," which has now a quadruple-platinum seller, is one spot above Daughtry at No. 6 on the Billboard 200, and season three winner Fantasia's self-titled second album is at No. 19.

Additionally, season two contestant Kimberley Locke is No. 1 on the Adult Contemporary singles chart with her rendition of "Jingle Bells," and season three's Jennifer Hudson is at No. 93 on the Pop 100 with "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going," from the "Dreamgirls" soundtrack.

I don't think I would call Fantasia's album a flop. It sold 133,000 copies in the first week, which would have put it in the top 5 in other weeks this year, it just so happens of course sales increase at Christmas time. :p

True...but Fantasia is suppose to be a top selling artist. Her new cd should open within the top 10 on the charts during any week of the year . Very dissapointing as i have been enjoying the first single so much . She ( and her record label/ manager) should have prepared allot more for the competition. I hope she gets out and promotes it more after the holidays.

Yeah, you have a good point, and I agree, I think it's a really good album! It's a shame that a talented singer like Fantasia somewhat flops and an AWFUL singer like Ciara can be #1! :o

Depends on whether it has longetivity. If you are going to release an album at this time of year you either have to have a big debut, or stick around at the upper end of the charts for a year to take advantage of Christmas again.

Her CD is good though. :lol: both are REALLY commercial. Fantasia is more specialized though. Ciara's much more commerical.

Ciara = Deena Jones
Fantasia = Effie White :lol:

I have both CDs and Fantasia > Ciara

Young Jeezy :bounce: That album is great!!!!

Fantasia :eek: I'm shocked. It should have done much better. It was really good. Hopefully it will climb!

I'm not shocked about Fantasia. I just barely heard her first single last week for the first time. Arista records sometimes has this habit of releasing albums before the first single has had sufficient time to impact. I think that's the case with Fantasia. Here in the second largest market in the US (Los Angeles) she has had very little airplay. I reckon she's going to have her big drop next week, then she'll settle in and word of mouth will sustain the album. To my surprise, it's a really good album- and that will be her saving grace.

Jennifer Holiday's version peaked around 27 I think 25 years ago. Hudson has a great chance in making that song the big hit it should be.

I think that's enough for Carrie Underwood to have the highest selling album of 2006.
Congrats to Daughtry and Carrie.
Fantasia tried last season sales. It's worked for Alicia Keys, Outkast, and Mary J. Blige in the last few years so it was a good idea until the other American Idols took a little of her steam.

Kimberley Locke continues to do well in AC.

Jennifer Hudson should go higher than Jennifer Holiday's rendition on the charts.
She'll have help from the dance charts.
The remix should be the best of 2007.

She recieved little promotion and airplay in my market also. I knew that somehow Arista would drop the ball this time. The album is good so if she realeases another good single sales should pick up. Honestly, with the way J Records did Monica I didn't expect Fantasia to fare any better.

I know, absolutely pathetic. That album deserved to do so much better than it did.

I'd buy the CD if it had a nude and raunchy picture of Taylor inside, but otherwise, forget it, I wouldn't pay $.02 to hear him sing, he was strictly eye-candy on Idol last year.

You know when Idol was on, I thought Taylor was way old looking. He came off as cute mostly because of his personality. But since winning and going through the Idol makeover (albeit not nearly as much as say Clay Aiken). He's starting to look pretty hot :lick: I'm glad his albums' doing well, but I'm not a huge fan of his style of music.

Fantasia :sad: Her album is so solid, her lable really dropped the ball. I haven't heard any of her singles played here in Canada. Has she even filmed a video to go with her first single? That helps a lot. If her song can get some air play I think her album will soar because it's great.

I personally was a little disappointed in Fantasia's album. I understand that she has a very specific niche in R&B, which the whole single mother struggling to make it and find love routine, but I find that it could have been better done. She needs better songwriters and producers cause only a couple of songs on the cd were banging. I guess I will change my mind the more I listen to it, but I think that Keisha Cole and Mary have done it better in R&B this year.

a lot of the songs, musically, i dont think allow her to portray the same level of emotion that edged her above the competition in AI3.

Some songs are not instantly catchy but give it a bit more time. I think her video and promotion could of been better. I knew she wouldn't pull in big numbers first week out because the promotion just wasn't there. The album is solid, it should of did better but hopefully with the release of "When I See You" as a second single sales pick up.:)

They are all good songs, the problem is she needs great songs that directly relate to her experience. Fantasia has the same spirit as MJB and her producers need to tap into her personal journey to get the best material for her. The album is indeed good, I love it. I'm a fan for life though.:lol:

it really is a good cd at first listen i didnt like it then i kept listening and i'm hooked now i have to debate between her and beyonce in the car but i as far as the release being too soon i thought that the second i found out she was coming out with a cd cuz i didnt know until 2 days before they should've let her put this single out then the album and immediately another single she could've caught some of the craze from dreamgirls being that jennifer is from american idol and so is fantasia but hopefully more people go get it cuz its worth every penny!
