1st Round

Iva Majoli(CRO)-Tina Pisnik(Slo):(

2nd Round
I hope Iva Majoli - Winner Zvonareva/qualifer

Good luck Iva!

I like Iva's draw. :D

Tina has a nice slice and her aggressive style should be effective on the lawns but but I believe Iva has too much power.

Vera may be tough. She really impressed in Paris where I saw her matches against Francesca and Serena but I wonder if she will be as effective here as she was on the red clay? I trust Iva's experience will get her through safely.

Elena D is definitely beatable on this surface. If Iva tees off on Elena's erratic serves she should make it to the 4th round.

Justine will probably await Iva here. Juju's early round exit at RG makes me wonder if she's doubting herself a bit. I know she was sick but still! ;)

GO IVA!!!

I'm just going to take it one round at a time this tourni (well, for now anyways!)- Iva and Tina have never played, and I've just checked Tina's grass court record:

64 W Katarina SREBOTNIK (SLO) 6-4 6-2
32 L Kristina BRANDI (USA) 6-7(3) 2-6
32 L Dominique VAN ROOST (BEL) 4-6 6-7(6)
128 W Hannah COLLIN (GBR) 6-1 7-5
64 W Lubomira BACHEVA (BUL) 6-2 6-1
32 L Anke HUBER (GER) 2-6 3-6

64 W Julie PULLIN (GBR) 6-3 3-6 6-2
32 W Meilen TU (USA) 6-1 1-6 7-6(4)
16 L Elena LIKHOVTSEVA (RUS) 6-4 4-6 3-6
128 W Gala LEON-GARCIA (ESP) 1-6 6-1 6-4
64 L Tatiana PANOVA (RUS) 6-7(3) 6-2 2-6

So she's played 5 grass court tournis in her career and won a total of 6 matches. Not a bad record really, so she will be tough. I'd say her most notable grass court win is over Tu, but with only 2 Wimby appearances she reached the 3rd and 2nd rounds.

In comparison, Iva's grass court record:

Birmingham (Seeded #3)
64 B BYE
32 W Nicole ARENDT (USA) 3-6 6-3 8-6
16 W Kristine KUNCE (AUS) 7-6 2-6 6-4
QF L Brenda SCHULTZ-MC CARTHY (NED) 4-6 7-5 0-6

128 L Sandra CACIC (USA) 6-4 3-6 4-6

Wimby (Seeded #11)
128 L Angelica GAVALDON (MEX) 6-1 3-6 1-6 (Seeded 11th)

Rosmalen (Seeded #1)
32 W Kyoko NAGATSUKA (JPN) 6-2 6-4
16 W Amelie MAURESMO (FRA) 6-4 6-2
QF L Helena SUKOVA (CZE) 1-6 1-6

Eastbourne (Seeded #3)
32 B BYE
16 L Natalia ZVEREVA (BLR) 2-6 5-7
Wimby (Seeded #4)
128 W Mariana DIAZ-OLIVA (ARG) 2-6 6-0 6-3
64 W Marion MARUSKA (AUT) 6-3 6-3
32 W Karen CROSS (GBR) 4-6 7-6 6-4
16 W Irina SPIRLEA (ROM) 6-7 6-1 9-7
QF L Anna KOURNIKOVA (RUS) 6-7 4-6

128 W Karina HABSUDOVA (SVK) 6-2 6-3
64 L Nathalie TAUZIAT (FRA) 0-6 1-6

1999-DNP any grass tournis

2000-DNP any grass court tournis

128 L Meghann SHAUGHNESSY (USA) 6-7(4) 3-6

So really, Iva has only been on a grass court to play a match once since 1998!!!! I'm a little scared by this reseach, but I still hope she can beat Tina!!! Great win over Spirlea in '97- check that out! But otherwise, I'm afraid that Iva has no huge grass results to speak of. Thankfully the grass season is short, so she won't suffer too much! Go Iva!!! Win your 1st round baby!!!

Jun 19th, 2002, 05:33 AM
Hey guys :wavey:

I must admit Im not all that confident re the Tina Pisnik match...sure Tina is more of a claycourter, but she has the slice backhand, which can give Iva fits on grass :( Im a little wary of this match, as we all should be, but if Iva wants it bad enough she will win :)

I agree Ed...she can come thru to the final 16...it depends on which Iva shows up when she steps out on court ;)

Well my last exam is on Monday, just in time for Wimbledon!! So I look forward to a good two weeks of tennis ;)

Jun 20th, 2002, 02:26 AM
I must agree with you that as positive as I am trying to be, I am also very worried about this 1st round. I don't believe that Iva really cares that much about grass, but she seems to do well after a little bit of time off. Let's hope she's comes out firing and wins in straight sets. Pisnik is probably playing her best tennis of her career this year, so it won't be easy. But Iva always surprises me- I thought she would struggle against Zvonareva at Bol after barely winning in their previous match 7-5 in the 3rd in Miami, but she beat her handily (6-2 6-0). I hope it's a similiar result here!

Jun 21st, 2002, 12:33 AM
..Tina Pisnik is playing very well on grass right now. She just beat Clijsters in straight sets to move into the semis of the Netherlands grass court warm-up tourni. She plays Dementieva next for a place in the finals against either Juju or Eleni Daniilidou. I'm still keeping the faith for Iva, but now this match-up looks even tougher!!! A win here would be awesome and we all know that Iva can do it!!! Good luck darling DIVA!!!

Jun 21st, 2002, 01:16 AM
I hope you guys aren't getting sick of me, but I'm checking this stuff out anyways, so I might as well share it.....

Worst case scenario- Iva loses 1st round- well that's 2 points that she is defending, so she is guaranteed to move up to an official # 25 ranking with Tauziat dropping well below her since she reached the quarters last year.
Next up is Tanasugarn, who I love, but needs to defend at least 90 points. Tamarine has not been showing much grass court form this year, so Iva has a good shot to pass her too! #24 for Iva!
Next up is Panova. Tatiana actually reached the 3rd rnd last year, so she has at least 56 points to defend. Panova is currently 77 points ahead of Iva, but an early round loss could cost her. This is not unlikely against AnnaK first round. She beat Pisnik (!) and Dragomir last year, but I don't know what their ranks were at that point, but if one was at least ranked above #75 and the other was ranked above 120, then a 1st round loss by Panova would put Iva at #23!!!!
#22 ranked Anne Kremer and #21 Daja Bedanova are unlikely to move below Iva (unless Iva wins!) as they both lost 1st rnd last year.
Iroda lost in the 3rd rnd last yr but she has 1268 points currently and probably won't drop below Iva's current 1099.
Maggie Maleeva has 1289 points currently and reached the 4th round last year. Subtract 90 points and she is still above Iva.
Schnyder is also safely above Iva (as are the rest of the players ranked higher) even with her 3rd round result here last year.

In summary, a first round loss will still improve Iva's ranking! She will go to at least #25 (where she was anyways with Tauziat above her), and she has a good shot at #24 or #23. I hate wishing that other players will lose, but this is a huge opportunity for Iva! I dare not even think about how much her ranking would improve if others lose 1st round and she wins!!!! This 1st round match is HUGE!!!!! PLEASE WIN IVA!!!!!

Of course we're not sick of you ;)

Tina is playing awesome right now...I actually think she is the favorite in the Iva match now. Considering Iva's indifferent attitude to grass (she hardly ever plays the warm ups) and the way Tina is playing in Holland, I think it's safe to say that this is one HUGE match for Iva to win, and even though I hate to admit it, I dont like the odds of Iva winning at this stage :(

Oh well...Go Iva Go :bounce:

Jun 21st, 2002, 08:08 PM
Grass is definately not Iva's best surface. The way Tina played in Rosmalen definately makes her a favorite to win this match, and I know she is more comfortable on the grass. However, Iva can win on grass! She just needs to be fired up and inspired... for example, in 1997 she was on a major high after winning the French and reached the QF, so she can do it! :D

Jun 22nd, 2002, 06:15 PM
Hmmm, Elena D smashed Tina 6-2 6-0 yesterday...and Elena and Iva play fairly similar (and both list grass as their least preferred surface)...so will this loss affect Tina? Does this show that a solid baseline game, thats suited to clay and hardcourts, can effectivley beat the slice n dice game of Tina Pisnik? ;)

Lets wait and see! Go Iva!!!!!!

Jun 25th, 2002, 02:07 AM

From memory its the 3rd match out on Court 15.

Come on Iva! Win baby win! :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

Jun 25th, 2002, 11:07 AM
Good luck Iva! :bounce:

Jun 25th, 2002, 05:48 PM
6-3 6-4 :)

Excellent win!

Next up is red hot Russian Vera Zvonareva. A very very tough match! Iva has beaten her twice this year, one was 7-5 in the 3rd in Miami....and the other was 6-2 6-0 on clay in Bol...this is grass, a surface neither of them really prefer...and I expect a real fight out there. I love Vera too so I hope she plays a good match :)

But Iva all the way ;)

Good luck :bounce:

Thanx to our resident paparazzi Sonja!!! ;)

I love Iva's hair like that! :hearts:

Jun 26th, 2002, 02:06 AM
Iva looks awfully determined doesn't she? :D

There's something so classic about white and with Iva filling the bill how can you not stare? :hearts:

Thanks for the snapshots, Sonja :)

Go Diva!

Jun 27th, 2002, 01:10 AM
Well, Iva's doubles campaign is over. She lost with Patricia Tarabini to Tatarkova/Montalvo 6-2 6-7 6-4 :(

Oh well, more time to focus on singles ;)

3rd match out on court 3!!!!

GO IVA! Strut your stuff! :bounce:

Jun 27th, 2002, 09:06 AM
greetings Divas, just dropping in with Iva news... I got to see her play doubles yesterday! Unfortunately, she and Tarabini lost to Montalvo and Tatarkova, but given that they were giggling and laughing most of the way through, it didn't seem that they were taking it seriously - and they still won a set (the set I missed... ah, the call of Pimm's. Mmm. Lovely stuff). Iva seemed really surprisingly comfortable on the grass too - and I got her to sign my programme as she left, which she did with a smile :D Her hair is looking fab, too.

Jun 27th, 2002, 02:34 PM
Yay Alex!

Glad to see ur representing the diva's in style, and with ur Pimm's and all ;)

She's on after the Coetzer-Baltacha match which has just started on court 3!

Jun 27th, 2002, 06:10 PM
She made it!!!!!!

7-6(5) 6-2 against Vera!!! :D Great win! A very tough much and I bet she is relieved to get it over with!

Next up is Elena Dementieva...VERY TOUGH! Elena has absolutely thrashed her 6-1 6-1 (Hilton Head 2000) and 6-2 6-3 (Leipzig 2000) but Iva was pretty much returning to the tour then and Elena was hot property. Elena is definately the fave but anything can happen :) Im quietly confident.

GO IVA GO! woohoo! :bounce:

Jun 28th, 2002, 12:44 AM
Terry, what was so tough about it? She won going away! ;) Sorry I missed the scoring threads but I was spinning like a top at work today. :o

hmmm, another Russian appetizer. :D

I have a feeling Iva will destroy Elena like she whipped Vera.

the cat
Jun 28th, 2002, 02:39 AM
GS, how much do you want to bet? ;)

GS, that's cute about Elena being another Russian appetizer! But Elena is a pretty big appetizer! LOL!

It is nice to see Iva playing at a fairly high level again! :D

But going from Zvonareva to Dementieva is like going from playing a very good junior to a WTA top 15 player. And that's quite a big jump to try to make!

I hope the Iva/Elena match is played on a show court, so their fans in America can actually see them in action. :)

Jun 28th, 2002, 02:52 AM
I didn't know you posted in here CAT:wavey:
Anyway, I agree that going from Vera to Elena is like trying to climb Mount Everest when you've previously only climbed Mount Blanc.
I predict an Elena victory. I hope Henin loses so Elena doesn't face her in the 4th round, because I fear that Henin would probably win that encounter.
UDACHI et DAVAY Elena!!!!!!!!!

Jun 28th, 2002, 02:55 AM
Cassius, how dare you cheer for Elena in our Iva Forum! :fiery:

*banishes Cassius to the dungeon for a sinister game of Russian roulette*

Cassius, how dare you cheer for Elena in our Iva Forum!
*Slinks quietly away to Russian Roulette fortress to plan further attacks*:p

Jun 28th, 2002, 05:55 AM
Cassius and cat, this is our forum we can say whatever we like :p

May the best girl win. And it *will* be Iva :p

Guess she better get her hiking boots and rope out then  ;)

Jun 28th, 2002, 06:26 AM
I'll be polite cos I'm an elena fan too ;)...but intruders stay out of Fort Iva :p lol

Iva usually plays best when exectations are low (ie RG '97, FCC '02) , and worse when people expect her to win (Bol '02, RG '02...a list too numerous to mention unfortuantely :(). No one expects Iva to win on grass and she has worked into form by beating two very solid players who have been in good form.

Looks like a cracker of a match against Elena ...GO IVA!!!!:bounce:

Jun 29th, 2002, 12:54 AM
I just want to give you some news about Iva.

I read (and I think I wrote that in another forum) that was was on the diet together with her boyfriend last week and lost 4 kg. The article was about Iva's cooking skills and she made some nice meals there. She said that she prefers fruit and serials for breakfast and eats them almost every day.

Jun 29th, 2002, 01:05 AM
Here are some pics of Iva (some are older but I hope you will like them and sorry because they are small):

Of course they belong here!

Thanks so much for posting them!!! And thanks for the diet info as well! Im feeling hungry now...lol

Iva v Elena is the 3rd match on court 2, so with a little bit of luckit'll be on TV!

Go IVA! :bounce:

Good Luck Iva today :)

Jun 29th, 2002, 02:18 PM
Cassius, don't make things harder for me in here! Be subtle! ;) Don't come rambling into their Iva's Diva's forum and tell them Elena wil win. Use some diplomacy, like me, and say you hope for a good match.

I hope Iva and Elena have a good match today. It's on court 2, so I doubt any of it will be televised in America. :(

Those pictures are priceless! It's always nice to see Iva smile! :D

Iva's #1 Fan, I will be very discreet with what I say, okay? But what did you mean with the hiking boots and rope comments?

Jun 29th, 2002, 03:45 PM
cat, that was just me being a sarcastic ass ;)...you guys said beating Elena would be like trying to climb Everest so I just wrote that...I know, bad joke from me :o Im out of form with my jokes :p

You didnt take offence to that did you? Sorry if you did.

Jun 29th, 2002, 04:39 PM
Croatian TV will show the match live. I can't wait!

That's okay Iva's #1 Fan. Now I get it! :) And it's kind of funny! But Cassius said that bit about Mount Everest. Not me.

The match is underway on court 2.

Jun 29th, 2002, 06:39 PM
Elena wins!!!!HOORAY 7-5 6-2.
I saw the whole match live on TV, and I can say that the first set was very close and could have gone either way, but Majoli served too many DF.
In the 2nd set Majoli looked like she would rather have been some where else, and Elena stayed calm and solid and held her nerve and made some great winners.
I can honestly say, that the better player won today. Elena wanted it more and was prepered to fight for it and she won.
Bad Luck Iva, but CONGRATS Elena.
Elena deserved to win.

No hard feelings GOSANDRINE or IVA'S #1 FAN?

Jun 29th, 2002, 10:27 PM
No hard feelings but Iva's still had a better career. :p ;)

Jun 30th, 2002, 12:11 AM
No hard feelings but Iva's still had a better career.
That's a little harsh on Elena. Iva was near the top at a time when the compitition wasn't as good as it is today. Her career didn't even start untill after the Williams domination had begun.

Jun 30th, 2002, 12:16 AM

Jun 30th, 2002, 01:04 AM
Cassius, don't get your panties all in a knot.

Just a little playful ribbing.

Jun 30th, 2002, 01:46 AM
Iva's first service game was GREAT (4 service winners) and second game was also great (she broke Elena). But in her nerxt two service games Iva served 5 DF. Could someone explaine that??? Also at 5:5 in the first set, Iva played great point and was 15/0 up and then 3 DF's in the row. That is too much!!!

I read interview with Iva and she said that she gave up in the second set. Just to mention that Iva had a bandage on her right leg (I think that she fell during match against Zvonareva).

She just have mixed doubles here and after that she is taking a one week break at Bol until FED Cup match against Austria (GO CROATIA http://perso.club-internet.fr/ttle/tennis/hrwink.gif we want you in the final!!!)

Jun 30th, 2002, 04:08 AM
I was lucky (or unlucky depending on how you look at it) to catch the 2nd set on TV (silly me didnt even realise it was on :o ). Im not surprised to hear that she said she gave up, cos her performace from 1-2 to 1-5 was disgraceful!!!!! I was so disappointed in her and angry :( The commentators were even saying, the last thing she wants to do is be out there right now.
I dont understand why she would do that?? The commentator said it best when she said, "Id like to know whats going on inside her head"....so would I. Iva is one of the most unpredictable players out on tour. When she is on, she can beat anybody, but when she is off, she can lose in challengers.

She definately handed that match to Elena with some pathetic errors, but to Iva's credit she played a great game to get to 2-5 and showed us what she is capable of. She dictated Elena (and from what I hear, it was Iva that was doing most of the dictating in the match, but Elena just played the bigger points better) in that game and I was like "Why couldnt you hit like this before?"...anyway, Elena did enough to stay composed and served really well. Im very disappointed with Iva, but I still love her of course ;) Hey, she reached the 3rd round on grass, so its not all bad ;)

Cassius, no hard feelings at all :) Glad to see Elena playing well again, and I hope she can beat Justine :) She deserved to win the match.

Jun 30th, 2002, 07:44 PM
The statistics say Elena only made 7 UE's! Elena is an UE machine! So that's remarkable how efficiently Elena played.

But it's disturbing to hear that Iva gave up in the second set! :( This is Wimbledon. And that is Elena Dementieva she's playing. Not Venus Williams. So there was absolutely no reason to give up.
