In the midst of growing interest in reports of a gruesome stem-cell and human-organ black market that traffics in newborn babies taken from their mothers, an investigator looking into the matter has been sacked "for political reasons," she says, because she was getting too close to the truth.
Several reports in British papers last week told the story of a video showing a post-mortem examination of infants of Ukrainian mothers who believe their babies were stolen from them at birth.

The video was given to reporters by a charity worker representing 300 families who believe their healthy babies were falsely declared dead by staff at a maternity hospital in the Ukraine's most easterly city of Kharkiv.

Due to pressure from families, authorities agreed in 2003 to exhume the babies' bodies for examination. A senior British forensic pathologist who has viewed the video says that what he's seen does not look like standard post-mortem practice, the BBC reported.

The video shows severed limbs and torsos with organs, including brains, stripped away.

The thorough dismemberment of the bodies has led some to believe that, if the grisly evidence points to the babies having been murdered, the hospital may be supplying harvested stem cells from bone marrow to an underground market.

The Ukraine has become the destination of last resort for many sufferers of incurable diseases – as well as those seeking cosmetic rejuvenation – who come from all over the world for stem-cell injection therapy. Treatments cost as much as $24,000 in Ukraine and much more in the West.

Critics not only question the value of stem cells to treat many of these disease but also the choice of treatment regimes and even how clinics there are able to acquire sufficient material to provide a commercial service.

Officially, the cells are taken from aborted fetuses with the mothers' consent, but, given the hundreds of Ukrainian women who have complained of newborns stolen and the recently surfaced post-mortem video, the government authorized an investigation into whether a trade in babies-killed-to-order exists.

One of those investigators was Irina Bogomolova, who worked in the chief prosecutor's office in the capital, Kiev. But, she says, she's been removed from the case after demanding that the inquiry be expanded beyond Kharkiv's maternity hospital.

"I was sacked for political reasons," Bogomolova told the London Telegraph. "I demanded an investigation into all maternity wings in hospitals across Ukraine and I was relieved of duty after making that demand."

The Council of Europe is scheduled in February to investigate allegations that newborn babies have been killed to provide stem cells and internal organs. Officials will focus on the role, if any, played by Ukranian research centers and maternity hospitals in the international trade in stem cells.

An earlier investigation in 2004 was dropped for lack of firm evidence, but the latest charges have caused the case to be reopened.

However, the sacked Irina Bogomolova won't be taking part.

"A trade in stem cells exists here ... I suspect there is a lot of bribery going on, right up to highest levels," she charged.

"Pregnant women, especially from rural areas, are very vulnerable targets as they will obviously believe whatever the doctors tell them. It's easy to take their babies from them and tell them they died or were born dead due to complications."

wow this is like such a load of crap for some many reasons. i mean you really have to suspend a LOT of reason to buy this crap (the only stem cell treatments in use today, use adult stem cells like bone narrow transplant, so on and so on. )

seriously there are some serious problems with the world if people actually believe this. its like someone rewrote the plot of the south park episode Krazy Kripples and tried to pass it off as a news story.

Krazy Kripples is episode 702 of the Comedy Central series South Park. It originally aired on March 26, 2003.

When Jimmy's comedy act is snubbed by the townspeople in favor of an inspirational talk by Christopher Reeve, Timmy and he form a club for genuine cripples, born that way, not wannabe posers like he says Christopher Reeve is. Timmy and Jimmy start their own club, dubbed "the Crips" unaware of the notorious, real life street gang that shares the same name. Eventually Timmy and Jimmy find out about the Crips, and under the belief that it is a group of disabled people like themselves, they attempt to, and eventually succeed in joining the gang by inadvertently causing a massive road accident that kills a group of the Crips' real life rival gang, the Bloods. Jimmy and Timmy only become aware of the actual nature of their new gang when a group of Bloods gang members commit a drive-by shooting on Jimmy's house. In order to prevent further reprisals, Jimmy decides to call a meeting at the local recreation center between the two gangs, and lock themselves in for the evening until they can sort out their differences. Expectedly, both gangs initially act hostile to one another, but Jimmy manages to convince them to sort out their differences and manages to bring the two gangs together, as they all then participate in various games and activities inside the recreation center as friends.

Meanwhile, Christopher Reeve campaigns for stem cell research for the handicapped in general (and for himself in particular). By cracking open fetuses and sucking out their juices, he soon regains mobility, and even super powers (like the character he portrayed, Superman). He eventually takes on the role of a supervillain, and is opposed by his arch-nemesis, Gene Hackman (the actor who portrayed Lex Luthor, Superman's archnemisis), whom Reeve refers to as Hack Man. This ironic comedy causes one reporter to comment that "if irony were made of strawberries, we'd all be drinking a lot of smoothies right now." Reeve continues to use stem cells even after he is healed and becomes addicted to power, and eventually puts together a Legion of Doom (see below) made up of villains from the comic and South Park universes. At the end Hackman manages to get a law passed to end Reeve's "fetus-sucking days," and traps Reeve in the Phantom Zone.

The episode ends with the four boys---Stan, Kyle, Cartman, and Kenny---having watched all the events, remarking that they were "glad they stayed out of this one."

Trivia

* This episode refers to Christopher Reeve's campaign for stem cell research.
* At the beginning of the episode, Kyle says "Dude, that's not cool. You shouldn't make fun of Christopher Reeve, dude." The episode then proceeds to do the exact opposite.
* On the creator's commentary, Trey Parker said that because no one on the South Park staff (besides Adrien Beard,Vernon Chatman and Isaac Hayes who provide the voices of Token Black,Towelie and Chef respectively) is African American, he had to go out into the street and find three or four black men to record the voices of The Bloods and The Crips.

References to Pop culture

* The roles of Reeve and Hackman are reversed from the earlier Superman series where Reeve played the eponymous hero and Hackman his indomitable arch-enemy Lex Luthor. Reeves' acting later in the episode is reminiscent of the Penguin from Batman.
* The Crips & Bloods playing music in the center is a reference to Fat Albert.
* At the end of the episode, Christopher Reeve is trapped inside the Phantom Zone, a square that is floating in space. This is a reference to the fate of Jor-El's enemies General Zod, Ursa and Non.
* The scene where Reeve stands up is a reference to the Super Bowl commercial where Reeve walked onto a stage to accept an award for his efforts to promote medical research. He admitted that it was digitally-edited and couldn't stand up for a long time.[citation needed]
* Reeve's line, "That name no longer has any meaning for me", is a reference to Darth Vader in Return of the Jedi.

It's pretty sad to see this happening. But, not at all a surprise.

It's a blackmarket like organs in China.

I hope we get a grip on this issue faster.

It's not Rush Limbaugh v. Michael J. Fox.
Someone against embryonic stem cell research growth by the
federal govt. is not satan, they're asking and bringing up a legitimate
question. Should the fed. govt. be creating embryos or using
embryos to possibly do scientic research. When adult stem cell
research and gene therapy are so much more promising. Who gets
to decide what embroys to create or use or toss away.

The issue of stem cells involves adult v. embryonic. Yet, that's
rarely brought up.

There is a big difference between obtaining adult stem cells and
even embryonic from dead/and aborted childredn, and the science
fiction style scenario states have now legalized - creating embryos
to get stem cells.

I didn't believe it at first, until I saw a BBC report on it. The BBC is generally pretty trustworthy.

healthy new-born babies may have been killed in Ukraine to feed a flourishing international trade in stem cells, evidence obtained by the BBC suggests.

Disturbing video footage of post-mortem examinations on dismembered tiny bodies raises serious questions about what happened to them.

Ukraine has become the self-styled stem cell capital of the world.

There is a trade in stem cells from aborted foetuses, amid unproven claims they can help fight many diseases.

But now there are claims that stem cells are also being harvested from live babies.

Wall of silence

The BBC has spoken to mothers from the city of Kharkiv who say they gave birth to healthy babies, only to have them taken by maternity staff.

In 2003 the authorities agreed to exhume around 30 bodies of foetuses and full-term babies from a cemetery used by maternity hospital number six.

One campaigner was allowed into the autopsy to gather video evidence. She has given that footage to the BBC and Council of Europe.

In its report, the Council describes a general culture of trafficking of children snatched at birth, and a wall of silence from hospital staff upwards over their fate.

The pictures show organs, including brains, have been stripped - and some bodies dismembered.

A senior British forensic pathologist says he is very concerned to see bodies in pieces - as that is not standard post-mortem practice.

It could possibly be a result of harvesting stem cells from bone marrow.

Hospital number six denies the allegations.

this article>>>??

its so vague and uninformative. its so speculative and the only proof. a video is not sited or sourced. since when in 2006 do stories talk about videos as the main source but dont link or site it?

and a like the other article a lot of it doesnt make sense. why you take a babies BRAIN to harvest bone marrow, when bone marrow can be gotten, and usually is gotten from adult stem sells. this bbc article looks like the post-katrina NYT articles that were saying all manner of things were going on but really didnt come from anywhere.

not only that, but the same bbc links to article that talks about TWO babies, but according to the same bbc these stories are lies??

Ukrainian baby hospital hits back
Pregnant mother (generic)
The mothers of the babies say they did not see their children's bodies
The Ukrainian maternity hospital at the centre of baby theft and organ removal allegations in the eastern city of Kharkiv has dismissed them as "lies".

Larissa Nazarenko, head of Maternity Hospital No 6, spoke out after briefing an envoy from the Council of Europe.

The visit by Ruth-Gaby Vermot-Mangold was prompted by reports of the theft of two babies in 2002 and organ removal.

The envoy, who met families, state officials and campaigners, said she would issue a report early next year.

The issue of trafficking in humans and human organs is "a fundamental problem... but it's not only in Ukraine," she said, declining to reveal what she had learned during her trip to Kharkiv.

'Afraid of birth'

Ms Vermot-Mangold will present her conclusions to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (Pace).

Campaigners in Kharkiv believe two babies were stolen at birth from Maternity Hospital No 6 - but the hospital has strongly denied this.

Ms Nazarenko said she had produced "objective data received from those who were present during the birth" for Ms Vermot-Mangold.

"We tried to prove there is nothing to this problem apart from lies and acts of provocation," the hospital head said.

It was unclear if Ms Vermot-Mangold was using the trip to investigate a third alleged case, involving a different hospital in the city.

Ukrainian prosecutors have been conducting their own investigations.

Tatyana Zakharova, a campaigner for the families involved, earlier told the BBC News website that people in Kharkiv had become "afraid to even give birth".

it seems that this Tatyana Zakharova person appears in this almost identical article that has been moving around the web since 2003. (in three years the video has never surfaced??)

additionally she is sometimes listened as a lawyer for the family or an advocate or an activist. she appears to be connected to the National Ukrainian Federation of Multiple-child Families which seems to exist only in connection with this story?
