Our society is really getting beyond absurd with the idiotic political correctness.

We saw an example when they decided to suspend an opera in Germany because of security fears as it showed the head of Mohammed, funny things is that muslims didn't oppose to it and even asked for it to be played.

Here in Canada, a judge ordered a christmas tree to be removed because it could offend people that are no Christians, muslim leaders called that decision stupid and stated that far from being offended they enjoy the Christmas celebrations.

There have been cases in Britain and other countries, and are the muslims who are asking the authorities not to be so damn stupid.

I mean, we all know there are extremists that would look for any excuse to cause trouble, but we are censoring ourselves, we are basically putting limits to everything we do to not offend anyone, and the funny part is that who are supposedly offended are the ones speaking up against these ridiculous bans.

We can't even call Christmas Christmas, it's supposed to be just "holidays".

whatfuckingever.

I heard about the Christmas tree thing on the radio on the way home from class. It is a really dumb decision in my opinion. Like you pointed out, no one from any religious or cultural group has been opposed to it. I could understand if all people were forced by law to put up a tree, but they aren't. It's just a decoration. I'm all for being PC, but sometimes issues that require actual PC are ignored in favour of showboating for no reason like this.

OMG, yeah, like when we were singing Christmas carols to the lower school, the directors said we had to sing "We Wish You A Happy Holiday" instead of "We Wish You A Merry Christmas" because Christians would be offended. I mean, we wish you a happy holiday, we wish you a happy holiday doesn't fit with the flow of the song. :o

What the hell? I am christian and I am not offended by singing "We Wish You A Merry Christmas"
Or do you mean the opposite?
That is hilarious that that happened to you guys though, I've heard that Wal-Mart has decided to stop being PC and has decided to go back to saying Merry Christmas, which is great!

Oops, I meant non-Christians. :o But anyway, it was so irritating, it messed up my already rusty lyrics to the song! :( :fiery:

Well said Fingon. :clap2:

Jews, for instance, had lived in western christian countries for centuries and centuries and this type of thing never happened. But why is happening now? Who is responsible for it? For whom are we censoring ourselves? Who is threatening and intimidating us?

It's time for us to know the enemy.

No of course, Jews were just persecuted, killed, expelled, treated like second-class citizens, ridiculed,...but yeah they were really well-liked here in the west. :weirdo:

Absolutely right, most people aren't offended that fast, so why should you cancel some habits cause a very small minority could be annoyed.

And about the extremists, I think it's very hard to do anything against it, I mean if they want to attack they will attack. We only wasting money to attack the attackers (how wrong), but I didn't solve anything so far. Besides we give them the media attention they don't deserve.

Idiot. You clearly misunderstood the point of Fingon's post.

I don't think this is all related to Islam, but more of a current battle in the West between secularism and Christian religious expression. There was a problem in a Seattle airport this week, where Christmas trees had been removed because a rabbi asked also for Jewish symbolism.

It's time for us to know the enemy. The Christmas trees are back up at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport.

Maintenance staff worked overnight to restore the 14 plastic trees that had been removed during the weekend because of a rabbi's threat to sue over the lack of a menorah in the airport's holiday decor.link (http://www.commercialappeal.com/mca/us/article/0,2845,MCA_25346_5209556,00.html)

i don't think those words are an illustration of the distance that i think Fingon's was aiming for, concerning some religious issues that sometimes have been dealt with, in an alarmist way.

but, at least thanx for giving us an exemple of the attitude that needs to be avoided, to resolve some of those issues with diplomacy, understanding & wisdom.

Christmas is a holiday and should be treated like one. No one should be offended if someone says Merry Christmas.

I mean, you don't here people getting offend hearing "happy easter, happy Halloween, Happy Thanksgiving, Happy St. Patrick's day" Not everyone celebrates those holidays either, and those who are "offended" by Merry Christmas should be offended by happy easter and happy thankgiving also because those are also christian holidays.

thats not right, the director from the opera got death threats by letters
thats why they decided to stop the opera.

but i agree, and it is just my opinion

Religion = EVIL

I didn't hear the director had death threat letters, so maybe it was the media sending us one sided info once again. The only thing we heard here, is that everyone was upset about the decision even Angela Merkel.

Carolers ordered to stop singing for Cohen
Christmas carolers were asked to stop singing at an event where figure-skater Sasha Cohen was signing autographs.

Cohen, who is half-Jewish, was signing autographs after performing in Riverside, Calif., when a city official asked a high-school choir to stop singing because of Cohen's religion, according to the Riverside Press-Enterprise.

Sasha was stunned. We both thought the voices were just lovely, they were doing such a wonderful job, said the 22-year-old skaters mother, Galina Cohen. Christmas carols are part of celebrating the holiday season. Cohen, an Olympic silver medalist, reportedly celebrates everything.

What's happening to common sense these days?

Just ridiculous!! I agree with the thread starter. I said something similar recently in the thread about Rosie O'donell. It is pretty scary to me the type of "policing" going on these days on what one can say in the event of offending someone or some group.

Silent night for fear of offending Jew

By Catherine Elsworth in New York

Last Updated: 1:41am GMT 16/12/2006

A school choir was told to stop singing carols at a show featuring a Jewish ice skater because officials feared she would be offended.
The Rubidoux High School Madrigals in Riverside, California, broke off in the middle of God Rest Ye Merry Gentleman at a rink where Sasha Cohen, a US Olympic medal winner, was performing in front of fans.
Staci Della-Rocco, the director of the choir, said she complied with the request by a city council employee and police officer to silence the children because "I didn't want to have a big old huge scene in front of my kids".

"This request was simply made by a staff member who was attempting to be sensitive to the celebrity guest, without considering the wider implications... or consulting with her supervisor for guidance," said Belinda Graham, the city development director.
Cohen, 22, however, was "stunned" to learn the choir had been ordered to stop singing on her account, her mother said.
The 2006 Olympic silver medallist is half-Christian and "celebrates everything" at this time of year, said Galina Cohen. "Sasha was stunned. We both thought the voices were just lovely, they were doing such a wonderful job. Christmas carols are part of celebrating the holiday season."
Ron Loveridge, the mayor of Riverside, has apologised to the choir. He called the incident "unfortunate".

Did you actually bother to read his post, and I mean really read it? You're hate on for anything related to Islam and Muslims has reached monumental proportions. These actions are seen as all the more absurd because many groups including Jews and Muslims who are supposedly offended by Christmas according to these changes, are not and are actually not in favour of such oversensitivity. You're attempt to scapegoat Muslims yet again is truly sad. And yet you continue to maintain that you aren't biggoted?
