Serena tries too hard but Venus always looks great when she's fixed up.

The WS fans will be happy to hear how Roddick defended them (especially Serena) when Peter Bodo interviewed him for his poker tournament:

We shook hands all around and headed back to the car. It was a little after one, and nobody had eaten anything since about 8. But Andy needed to have some racquets strung, so we had one more stop. On the way over, we got to talking about Serena Williams.

I think Serena's going to be great next year. You saw her at the (U.S.) Open, and she's been playing these exos (exhibitions) in the off-season. I know she's been hanging in Florida a little more, obviously training a little more. I think it'll be a good thing for the game. I mean, they need them. It's such an unreal story, when you think about it. We take it for granted. Really think about it - sisters, both No. 1 in the world, both winning all the time.

Think about it. The Manning brothers (NFL starting quarterbacks Peyton and Eli Manning) are great. Peyton's one of the best ever. But their dad was a pro quarterback, too. Think about the sisters. Where they came from. No experience in tennis, dad figures, "These women make a lot of money in tennis, I'm gonna put them in here." And look what happens. It's totally taken for granted.

I feel like they get a lot more negativity than they should. I really think they're misunderstood. If you're just around them - it's tough. Every person since they were 14 has wanted something from them. When you get around them, they're so sweet - oh my gosh - so giggly and stuff.

I've known them since I was 10. I was at Macci's (the Rick Macci Tennis Academy) with them, before they were supernovas. . .

I interrupted, suggesting that the Williamses had handled things badly, and seemed overly evasive and unforthcoming about what they were doing, and why. It seemed they wanted it both ways, stardom without the work or responsibility that comes with it. To which Andy replied:

To be honest with you, I saw them hit - eight hours a day, when they 10, 11, and 12. They never got a break. I never saw them take it easy. Ever. And for someone to sit here and tell me they can't do that? That's ridiculous to me. I witnessed it. They get bumped for not working hard? Oh my god, dude. They were manic. . . And the worst thing is, if they had come out and said up front, "We're not playing now, we need a break from all the work and stress", you know they would get it at the other end - guaranteed: "Oh, poor stars, poor little rich kids, they want to lead 'normal' lives. . ." No question they would get that.

I found this slightly disconcerting. Andy seemed so passionate about the subject that I have to wonder if I hadn't missed something critical, somewhere along the line, in the way I judged the Williams situation. And it wasn't the only subject that I came to see in a slightly different, perhaps clearer light.

He keeps it real, everyone acts like Venus and Serena did not earn their way to the top and that they don't deserves breaks or to live their lives the way they see fit.

I wonder if they were playing poker for money??

stunning and she is workin' it! :hearts:

Never liked Andy, but major
props for sticking up for V&S and
saying much that many of their fans
have said in defending them to this Bozo.

I saw the pics at Getty, Mandy Moore was there, that's nice that she and Andy are still friends. Maybe they'll get back together! They were too cute together.

Andy takes it from a tennis player's perspective, who knows what it take to get to the top of the game. Who knows what slump is, who appreciates efforts of other tennis players, regardless of whether the subject is the Williams sister or not.

On the other hand, as much as I like to read some of Peter's article, I find it somewhat harsh at times. He takes it from a fan/reporter's point of view. That is, as long as the camera is not on you hitting the ball or practicing, you aren't hitting the ball or practicing.

Peter has all these sources, it is one thing to hear about someone going through training, but it is another thing to understand someone going through it. And I think that is where Andy is coming from. And in this case I would side with Andy as much as I don't like this guy.

Serena looks as if she put on weight again. Venus looks great. I wonder what the real story is behind Serena's weight gain. She never had a weight problem! I believe there's definitely more to it than just layoff from injury.

It's interesting to see how much two young women known for their bangin' bodies have changed over the last 2 years. Anna Kournikova has gotten too thin and Serena has gotten heavy. I never thought I'd see the day.

Andy's got jungle fever..... ;)

All he ever dates is blonds.

By the way, if Venus could play with her wrist taped she would. I have a wrist injury of my own, even as an amateur, and I know first hand that it is difficult to consistently strike the ball or serve well with an ailing wrist. Period. Just thought I would put that out there because that part of your signature bothers me.

Andy has always been pretty tight with Vee & Ree.
His comments aren't really that surprising.
He definitely seems to be maturing quite nicely.
Hopefully his game will continue to mature als.

I agree that Andy likes the sisters. I recall a while back that he was asked which female player he would like to play with and he said Serena.

Andy has always been a really good ally for Serena and Venus. He has repeatedly defended them when writers come down on them. He's one of my favorite male players - and his defense of Serena and Venus are a big reason why.

It's a really nice pic of all three.
Still don't like Andy though (didn't know he knew the Williams sisters when he was ten ... I could never imagine them not working hard to get where they were either but I guess it's good he cleared that up for Bodo) !

I was just going to say the same thing!!! It's the best hairstyle I've ever seen her with. :D

Does Venus look a bit on the too-skinny side or is it just me? Hard to tell in that baggy dress but does her face look quite thin?

Exactly!!! Serena's always had a big backyard. Sorry but I had to say that (my mom used that expression to describe Gail Devers once and I never have forgotten it)! But I don't see the extra weight that people says she has - she looks good to me! And Venus's hair is really cute like that. I like it. :yeah:

You see Serena's extra weight in her fuller face and middrif. You can tell she doesn't have that killer 6-pack anymore. While Serena has always been thick, her body was always firm and tight. I agree those tits and that ass aren't going anywhere. Serena has always had serious curves and that's a good thing. However, she's definitely heavier than when she was playing at her best tennis.
