I've recently read a very lenghty interview with her in Serbian but it was only published in a Serbian sports magazine, not available on the Internet. The journalist said she speaks the language pretty well but he probably corrected all her possible grammar mistakes and such, so it's nothing too informative about her langauge skills.

i think monicas hungarian is better than her serbian. her parents are hungarians. in the novi-sad area lives a hungarian minority of about 300.000 people. the seles family was one of them. monica always spoke hungarian with her parents as far as i know.

that's true. hungarian is her first language.

serbian is a distant third.

I am from serbia, and have been Monica's fan since the beginning of her career. I rememeber very well that she used to speak serbian a lot in the beginning and that she spoke it very good, clear, and without any gramatical errors. she also said that she was speaking serbian around the household and with her parents. as for these days, i know that she is a wta mentor for jelena jankovic, and that jelena said in an interview here, that her communication with Monica is indeed in SERBIAN! so i guess Monica didn't lose her touch with her roots. Monica had always been attached with her native land, and hesitated for a very long time to take the US citizenship. she only took it after the hamburg attack...

I expect that she can speak good, but I guess it must have faded a bit. Don't know whether she speaks Serbian or Hungarian with her family but for sure when she was a junior and hadn't Americanized the spelling of her name, she used the Serbian spelling "Monika Seles" rather than the Hungarian "Monika' Szeles".
