View Full Version : Grand Slam Big Mistake.

Think of a match that your favorite lost in a grand slam where if they had won, you think they would have won the Slam.

Personally, as a Venus fan, I can easily cite her 2004 Roland Garros Quarterfinal against Myskina as well as her 2005 US Open Quarterfinal against Kim.

For Serena, her 2001 Australian Open Quarterfinal against Hingis. :[
And of course, the 2003 French Open Semifinal against Justine.

Serena at USO 04

If there had been a better umpire at her QF match, she might have won the match and the tournament. She would have had to face Dementieva in the semis and Kuznetsova in the final...

Kim in Australian Open 2006... If she hadn't twisted her ankle against Mauresmo I think she would've won that match including the final against an ill Henin-Hardenne..... It would've been Kim's second straight GS win but no... another GS semi.... :(

For me it was the same as a few others Venus QF in USO 2005 and Serenas QF in USO 2004 although Serena to me lost unfairly and Venus just had a total breakdown in the 3rd set which was really weird i couldnt stop thinking about it for weeks after that.

Also if Serena had won her QF against Capriati in the 2004 FO she could've easily taken that 2nd french crown.

Nastya lost a big chance at the AO 2005 (to play at least the final). She had reached the 2nd week without wasting energies and then she played an horrible match vs Dechy in the 4r.
She missed the chance to play against Patty in the QF and Lindsay in the SF. Davenport is really a great player but she had a lot of troubles to beat Dechy in the SF, that's why I think an in-form Nastya could have reached the final...

Davenport USO 2004. Damn that would have been a fun final for Lindsay fans.

Davenport USO 1999.

Davenport Wimbledon 2001.

Ignoring the fave bit:

Capriati RG 2004 - the title was hers for the taking after the QF's. :o

Serena RG 2003.

I'm going to have to say:

2004 US Open: If Lindsay Davenport had beaten Kuznetsova in the Semifinals she may have won the US Open.

2004 Wimbledon: If Lindsay Davenport had beaten Sharapova in the Semifinals she may have won Wimbledon.

Martina Hingis...

Wimbledon 1998 - lost semi to Novotna
Roland Garros 1997 - lost final to Majoli
Roland Garos 1999 - lost final to Graf
Roland Garros 2000 - lost to Pierce in Semi - i think she would've gone on to win it.
US Open 1999 - lost to Serena in final after beating Venus in the semi (the tougher of the two Williams sisters at the time)
US Open 2000 - lost to Venus but lead 5-3 third set.
Australian Open 2002 - lost to Capriati after leading 6-4 4-0 :help:

CONCLUSION - HINGIS SHOULD HAVE WON MORE SLAMS.

Martina Hingis at this year's AO. Had she beaten Clijsters, she would have faced a very beatable Mauresmo on Hingis' best surface, and then Henin-Hardenne would have conceeded the match to Martina since she had yet another one of her viroooooses. Martina :(

A long shot, but Dokic's retarded loss to Mandula at RG 2001. Dokic was one of the favorites for the title (she had won Rome just a few weeks ago). She would have had to beat Clijsters in the QF, Henin in the SF and Capriati in the F but it might have been possible (or more wishful thinking on my part :p). Dokic was better than Henin and Clijsters then so she could have done it.

Martina Hingis:

RG 97 (obviously- she lost in the final)

RG 98 (She was totally outplayed by Seles, but I think Hingis always had the mental edge over Sanchez-Vicario, and would have taken the title)

Wimbledon 98 (Had she beaten Novotna, Tauziat was a very beatable finals opponent - but I'm glad Jana got that one)

US Open 98 (obviously- she lost in the final)

RG 99 (obviously- she lost in the final)

US Open 99 (obviously- she lost in the final)

Australian Open 00 (obviously- she lost in the final)

RG 00 (Pierce was on fire, but had Hingis beaten her she would have hammered Martinez in that final)

Australian Open 01 (obviously- she lost in the final)

Australian Open 02 (obviously- she lost in the final)

US Open 06 (just kidding!)

I also think that had she won RG in 99, she would have probably won Wimbledon that year too - she had the momentum, form and confidence, and there is no way she would have tanked her first round to go skinny dipping with Heuberger in Cyprus if she hadn't lost that French final.....

Myskina at the AO in both 2004 and 2005. Had she beat Clijsters in the QFs in 04 I feel she would have beaten Schnyder in the semis. Then probably lost to JHH. In 05 I think she blew a golden chance at getting to the final as Filippo-Nastya already mentioned.

I don't think she wins either final but I think she could've gotten to both finals.

Venus, Davenport and Serena at US Open 2004. :sobbing:  If Venus had converted on her BPs in that last game and won the match, she would most probably have beaten Asagoe, Kuznetsova & Dementieva.
If Davenport hadn't got injured YET AGAIN in that semi after a set & a break lead, I think she'd have overwhelmed Dementieva in the final, like Sveta did.
If a good umpire had been in charge of Serena's QF she WOULD have won that match and then Dementieva & Kuznetsova would have been very beatable. :crying2: :sobbing: :fiery: That one hurts the most, for obvious reasons.

She would have been up 2-0 at that point, and then Capriati would have served to stay in it at 5-4 rather than serve for it, and then Serena got 3 more bad calls and would have won it 6-4.
But maybe Jen would have upped her game at that point, because she wanted it so bad.

Venus at the Aussie in 02, if she got past Seles i could see her ripping past hIngis and proving too much for jen in the final( Jen never got to grips with venus mentally at all).

Yeah, the US Open 04, was Lindsay's for the taking, as was Wimby that year, at least for the final anyway:(

I do not consider finals to be matches we should look back on and think if this match was won -- because obviously they would have won grand slam.

What I want to know from your favorites is a match in a grand slam that if they had won, they easily would have notched another grand slam or perhaps their first.

I believe Serena's 2004 US Open Quarterfinal characterizes the purpose of the thread best.

I have a few for Mauresmo. The 2004 French Quarterfinal; if she defeated Dementieva, she would have been able to defeat Suarez and Myskina to capture the title. Likewise, in the 2004 US Open QF, if she defeated Dementieva -- again, Mauresmo would have been able to defeat a choking Capriati and a young Kuznetsova. Even the 2004 Australian, Justine looked very rusty and if Mauresmo had not retired against Zuluaga, perhaps she would have been able to shock Justine and beat a tired Kim. At least she no longer chokes. :]

as a Myskina fan i presume you remember how poorly she played from the start of last year to til the middle. She probably wouldn't have won the Australian Open in 05 even if she didn't have to play someone ranked in the top 30 the whole way.

If anyone missed there chance it was Dechy considering she had Davenport pretty much beaten and was in the form of her life and up against Serena who was winning her matches on class and her opponents giving up the ghost.

Actually if i'm being honest it was Patty who really threw that tournament away - if her quarter-final against Dechy wasn't on court 1 she wouldn't have got affected by the heat the way she did and was more likely to finish off Davenport out of form than Natalie in reality.

Anyway i don't believe much in looking back into the past for this kind of purpose because it really means very little
