This is according to Pat Cash...and has some harsh critique of Venus having the right to complain about equal pay because she comes from "the slums of LA"

This is an excerpt from the article.....

And it is partly his love of the sport that fills him with anger and dismay at the attitude of some of today's female players, who were so vocal at Wimbledon last year when demanding equal pay with the men.

"It doesn't affect me in any way, but I get sick of the women whining on about it. You never hear the men moaning about what they're being paid," he says, with a tone that suggests he is about to fire off an indignant little volley.

"It's like two guys going to work and one is getting paid £20 an hour and the other £10 an hour. Well, the one doing the better work is getting £20 an hour - and that's the male player. That's because men are on court longer than women, so what are the women moaning about?

"When I hear about it I just want to tell them to 'shut the hell up!' I think the women are overpaid. To be honest, I think they're all overpaid.

"They need to come into the real world and stop making it such a big issue ... they need to stop this cr*p and live in the real world. They're getting paid a million dollars for winning a tournament and they are moaning.

"Then you hear someone like Venus saying (he puts on a squeaky voice): 'I don't want to mention boycott', but, you know, this is someone who came from the slums in Los Angeles … come on!"

I came from the slums of Brooklyn, but I always still battled for the big bucks! And like Venus, I had to support a whole family of blood-suckers and leeches, at least Venus has one sister who makes big money like herself. All I had was that loser Florence. Go Venus!

He really needs to shut up. Just because Ame/JuJu/Maria/Lindz/Hingis/Williamses earned more than he did during the course of his entire career. OMG *Death* :haha:

Hmm...

He's so boring and his points are so... ergh. But then I guess he doesn't know the concept of "drawing the crowds" because he didn't draw much of them when he was playing. Picky little man.

There are great actors who didn't get paid like Gov Arnold in movies.
Pay isn't always relative to who is better, especially in the entertainment business.

that is a very poor point,so is he saying if the women played the best of seven set's even if the tennis was dire they would deserve more money? quality not quantity that counts.

If I get it right, the male sprinters should be paid less than female ones then, because they can run faster and spend thus a shorter period of time on the oval. Now, isn't that funny?:haha: :haha:
Anyway, as a matter of fact, the WTA tour is becoming more popular (and a bigger commodity) than this ATP, so why shouldn't be female tennis players even better paid than men?;)

Funny, because I get sick of people bitching and whining about things that don't affect them, be it women's equality or gay marriage. It's like why oppose something that doesn't have shit to do with you unless you feel everything should exist only if you say so.

You never hear the men moaning about what they're being paid," he says, This dude doesn't know shit about what he is talking about. The ATP players are always talking about how they want more money.

"It's like two guys going to work and one is getting paid £20 an hour and the other £10 an hour. Well, the one doing the better work is getting £20 an hour - and that's the male player. That's because men are on court longer than women, so what are the women moaning about?First of all, tennis players aren't paid by the set. Men don't always play five sets and they certainly don't receive less money for it. Secondly, It's not the women's fault that they don't play five sets, the tournaments make that decision. You can't punish the women for not doing something you won't allow them to do.

"When I hear about it I just want to tell them to 'shut the hell up!' I think the women are overpaid. To be honest, I think they're all overpaid.Again, if the money is not coming out of his pockets, why does he care what the women are paid? These anti-women statements are not making him look good.

"They need to come into the real world and stop making it such a big issue ... they need to stop this cr*p and live in the real world. They're getting paid a million dollars for winning a tournament and they are moaning.
The only thing this guy knows about the "real world" is that lame MTV show. In the "real world" sports involve ticket sells and marquee value. The top 5 women bring in more money and press to the slams than the number 20 ranked male player. Surely he's not bringing in as much money to the tournament as them, so why should he be making more money than them?

"Then you hear someone like Venus saying (he puts on a squeaky voice): 'I don't want to mention boycott', but, you know, this is someone who came from the slums in Los Angeles … come on!"
Ok, I get it, in his mind people who come from less should accept less because in his opinion they are worth less. What a pompous bastard.

I'm predictably in the minority here, but I agree with some of his points. This whole thing is not an issue of women's rights. The men's tour gets a lot more money than the women's one, so it's natural that the men players would be payed more, and the women should really stop whining about the 5k difference or whatever.

Sorry, but this is what's so wrong about Wimbledon, and especially 1-slam male tennis players. Pat Cash is somehow the authority on tennis because of one Wimbledon grand slam win.

The article and quotes are so wrong in being totally ignorant, racist, and sexist. But it's the nothing unusual - Pat Cash has always proven time and time again to be an idiot.

The Venus quote at the end is condescending - I'm reading it as Cash saying that it's very "ghetto" to mention boycott and uprising. As if it's typical of someone from that side of the track to protest the status quo of rich white people.

Cash needs to get over it- tennis isn't about rich white people and the players aren't from that background anymore.

Maria, Justine and the WS are from families that were in very poor economic situations, it's all very very working class. Their success is due to talent, hardwork - it's not like they suddenly appeared in the tennis world. There's loads of video of them as little kids playing tennis.

Are we talking women as a whole because I can guarantee you that the marquee women's players are not only a bigger value to the slams than the #20 male player is, but they also are bigger assets to the sport as a whole.

and the women should really stop whining about the 5k difference or whatever.Your opinion is that of a non professional female tennis player. But when a tournament is using your picture everywhere, and you are out giving television interviews to drum up publicity for the tournament, and meeting with key tournaments sponsers, it's very hard to believe that you're not worth a bigger value to the tournament than some lower ranked no name male player whose face the tournament itself wouldn't dare put on a poster because they know he won't bring in any money. Let's be honest, tennis uses the women to get publicity and marketing dollars knowing that the majority of the money the tournament makes comes from marketing and ratings, not ticket sells. These greedy tournaments make so much money off the players but only gives them a fraction of it.

Players like Venus, Serena, Maria and Justine deserve their money. It's a pro tour, it's not a hobby.

They are the CEO's of their own company - their tennis career. And like business CEO's they have employees with them, and huge debits, and credits. They are the soul figure head, and brand name to their companies.

Roger received 8 million in prize money this year, no one is complaining about him.

I think female tennis players are under paid, IMHO.

Do you know the financials of both tours? If not, then you can't really make sweeping statements, and the women are mainly wanting the same prizemoney at the Grand Slams - they get equal prizemoney at AO, USO and FO - so why not at Wimby? And the women haven't said anything about this for a while, it is Cash himself that is brining this up yet again...for the publicity.

And fyi, the difference between the men and the women winning Wimby is generally NOT $5k. The mens winner of Wimby gets 630,000 POUNDS and the womens winner gets 625,000 POUNDS...that's actually almost $10k in USD.

Even worse ,with me being a WTA fan AND Wimbledon lover ,us poor limeys have to put up with the wank rags inane crap every year as Auntie Beeb seems fit go have him on the team. He obviously detests Womens Tennis ,his desicion ,but why cant he shut the fuck up..

I came from the slums of Brooklyn, but I always still battled for the big bucks! And like Venus, I had to support a whole family of blood-suckers and leeches, at least Venus has one sister who makes big money like herself. All I had was that loser Florence. Go Venus!

Why does Manhattan always win in terms of prestige and power over cities like Brooklyn? Will Brooklyn ever win?

I wish it were true that women were overpaid. But the players all are underpaid, men and women. The majors pay a very small % of their revenue in prizemoney.
