View Full Version : My Serena and Venus Experience: Press Conference in Denver!

Nov 30th, 2006, 10:11 PM
So, as most of you know, Serena and Venus came to Denver today for the McDonald charity tour. They stopped at a local high school for about an hour before their match later tonight to answer questions. And I was there!!

The event was for Denver elementary schools, and I just happen to be a son of a Denver Elementary school teacher. So, I missed school and joined her and her class on the field trip.

It started at about 12:30, although they were late. Before they come on, there was a jump-roping group that couldn't get their music on correctly. So they had a ten minute performance with Missy Elliot's "Lose Control" repeating over and over again. Everytime it restarted, you could heard the kids moan.

They put up projectors to show a short little montage of Serena and Venus and their careers, but I wasn't paying attention to it because by then they were at the corner of the gym and everyone was trying to catch a glimpse. Then, the moment came.

For the record: EVERYTHING I mention in this thread is TRUE. I would not waste my time lying to a whole bunch of people I don't know. I just happened to be very, very lucky today.

My mom has a disabled student in her class, who is in a wheelchair, so he could not sit in the bleachers of the gym. Instead, he sat in the very front of the gym. Me, being the kind-hearted soul I am, decided to join him at the very front. I kid you not, I was ten feet away from the table Serena and Venus sat at. It was amazing. I had the best seat in the house, front and dead center. Amazing.

So, when they were introduced, there wasn't much of a reaction from the crowd, they cheered a lot but you could tell that these 9 and 10 year olds didn't really know who Venus and Serena were. Me, on the other hand, went NUTS. I've always been one of those people who are like "Oh yeah, if I met them, I wouldn't even trip". WRONG. I acted like a twelve year old little girl, screaming and stomping and on the verge of a complete meltdown. I was in heaven.

As everyone probably already knows, Venus is taller than Serena. She has a very nice body and a butt that is extremely underrated. Of course, its easy to be underrated while standing next to Serena. Sorry to report this folks, but Serena does not look like she has lost much weight. She was wearing all black and even then you can tell she has some extra pounds on her.

The jump-rope group re-did their performance in front of Venus and Serena, this time it was much shorter and the music was working. Serena and Venus both jump-roped, Venus was the much better of the two. Venus' hair was asymmetrical and died brownish, Serena was wearing wig #43. Lol, maybe not but it was still a wig.

So, they finally sat down and the question and answer period began. Each elementary school that was there got at least one student to ask a question, there were about seven schools there. During one question, Venus was talking about her life and said "I'm 26, and Serena is..." and then she stopped and looked at Serena who looked at her with dread. So I yelled out "She's 25!", both Venus and Serena turned to me (I was right in front of them, and the oldest non-teacher in the entire gym) and both started laughing. Serena gave me an annoyed look and pointed at me like she was mad, but then started laughing. I almost pissed my pants. No joke.

So they went through a series of run of the mill questions that these young students made up. One of the most interesting parts was when they were talking about how long they would play tennis, and Serena was CLEARLY making a negative reference to Martina Navratilova, as she was saying "Only a few people are....in good enough shape to play until they are 50. Actually there is only one" Both she and Venus started cracking up, and Serena's friend Jackie, who I was sitting next to, did as well. I don't think anyone caught on to it, but I did. And trust me, it wasn't a statement praising Navratilova. You can tell Serena was mocking her. Ah well, I was pleasantly surprised at Serena's sense of humor.

She also talked about a teacher in fourth grade who was very mean to her, and how if she saw him/her again, she'd "Make sure he knew who he was dealing with." Everyone gasped/laughed. It was a really funny moment. Both their mikes kept messing up, and Serena commented that it was probably because she was saying all these things that weren't meant for elementary school kids. Oh well, I'm not one. I didn't mind. Venus seemed to have a very nice personality, she actually did more talking than Serena. Serena seems to be the nut of the two, constantly cracking up.

Two girls in my mom's class made a poster for me, both of them saying something to the effect of "Serena call Cameron if you want to meet the man of your dreams." Both posters had my cell phone number on it. They were the only two people in the entire gym who had posters. When Serena walked in, she tried to read it but just gave up and started laughing. She tried again at the end, and I think she could make out what it said. Well, at the end of the entire event, both of these cute little girls went up past Serena's security guards and handed her their posters. I didn't see them walk up there, or I definitely would have gone with them. Serena took both of the posters, thanked them, and walked out.

Yes, Serena Williams now has my cell phone number. She is free to call whenever she wants. I couldn't believe it!!!!!!!!!

I didnt have a camera, I didnt have any money to buy one before we came, so I took pictures on my camera phone. They are REALLY crappy, but I will post them up a little later when I get on my laptop. I also have the videotape of Serena jump roping (she wasn't getting very high off the ground,).

A student in my moms class who had his question read got the chance to take a picture with Serena and Venus and get an autograph. He didn't know who they were, so ge gave it to me! Wohoo!

I'm not able to go to the match tonight, so I'm SUPER happy that I got to see them. And yes, Serena Williams has my phone number. Not that she'll do anything with it, but that's not the point. We're pretty much dating now.

*sigh* life is good :wavey:

hey I0m really happy for you. I know what you mean about saying you are not the kind of person who would get numb when being in front of your fave. I used to think that too. When I met Lindsay I was kind of like mentally challenged, kept on repeating the same phrases, couldn't express myself... so yeah, it was an exciting moment. So I'm glad you had that experience.
Hope Serena calls! ;)

btw: I also gave Lindsay my e-mail (not my cell. phone I'm from Argentina don't think she'll make a long-distance call). She hasn't written yet :sobbing:
