Sacha Jones is all but confirmed as getting a Singles Main Draw Wildcard here after an absolutely stunning year on the junior circuit which really came out of no where! She won a G1, G2 and GB2 singles title along with reaching the quarters of the US Open and Canadian Opens. Shes very unlikely to win a match here however this will be great experience for her anyway - would love her to verse either Dani, Natsya, Jelena or Marion in the first round.
Given Main Draw Wildcard on 5 December

Marina Erakovic is one of only a handful of New Zealand women to get inside the top 200, and being ranked in the mid 160s and still growing as a player she holds no signs of stopping there. Shes never lost in the first round here, lets hope she doesnt start this time. Marinas got alot of good youngsters following in her footsteps which is putting pressure on her to keep moving up the leaderboard - would love her to verse a lower ranked player or qualifier in the first round although it would also be nice to see how she performs up against a top 20 player.

Ellen Barry will hopefully recieve a Main Draw Wildcard although more likely she will get a Qualifying Wildcard. Just a few months ago other New Zealand tennis fans were telling me shes got no hope but ive kept the faith and in that time shes gone from not having a ranking to being New Zealands 3rd highest ranked lady. I have seen this girl play quite a bit and she has got the brains and power to be a top 100 player - would love Ellen to get a Main Draw Wildcard and then verse Mirza in the first round (last time they met it was a fairly close encounter with Mirza being too good on the day, Ellen has improved alot since then), if Ellen gets a qualifying wildcard then I really dont care who she verses I just hope she puts up a good fight.

Doubt ellen will get the md wc.. the only kiwis who should get them are Marina/Leanne/Sascha then Ellen, but it will probably go to an international. Ellen has had some very good results in the last 2 months.. but is not a good enough player (yet) to compete against the girls in main and would probably get more out of qualies.. just a little out of her league. Whereas Marina and Leanne have proven they can beat girls ranked under 150 and also have the experience. Thats what I would go with anyways.

After Leannes performances this week I think theirs only about a one in twenty chance of Ellen getting it. However she will definately get a qualifying wildcard if she is not granted a maindraw wildcard (backed up by auckland tennis).

As you can see I hope Marina, Sacha and Ellen all do meet very hard opponents in the first round so that even if they loose they can feel what its really like to verse one of the worlds best.

It looks like the WCs will go to Erakovic, Jones, and an international player, but I really think Leanne Baker deserves one over Jones. Barry doesn't stand a chance

Even with Leannes performances this week I have to disagree with you there. Sacha has had a break through year in juniors, and is probably just as good if not better than Marina was at her time in juniors. Sacha has had a lack of support but that hasnt stopped her winning a G1, G2 and GB2 title.

Leanne has had support since she left juniors (many maindraw wildcards here, only once managed to reach the 2nd round I think), that was over 7 years ago now - her career high is 273 back in 1999 (that will change this week). Leanne may be able to crack 200 (just).

Sacha on the other hand is still relatively new to the sport, and only really started playing on the junior year full time this year. She is dedicated to her singles game (which is rare of a NZer) and from what ive seen of her she could potentially peak at around 50 on the senior rankings.

Ellen is one of three people who applied for the third wildcard, she stands a chance (imo very low, but im not richard palmer)

No way. If you compare the players they've wach won/lost against, Marina was clearly better in juniors.

Also you could compare Leanne's performance on the pro tour with Sacha's and that speaks for itself.

Look at how many singles titles each player has won. Marinas looks good because it was a few years ago and some of these players have done wonders at the senior level (Nicole Vaidisova for example wasnt an overly good juniors player but it a top 10 senior player).

If you look at Leannes pro tour compared with Sachas career you will see alot of matches and alot of losses for Leanne, while you wont find all that much under Sacha as Sachas been playing for the majority of this year.

Sorry but are you telling me you'd give a wildcard to a Jnr.. who hasn't had much luck on the tour over someone who has just beaten a girl ranked 104 in the world.. and has continued to keep winning?!

Yes Leanne has had many wildcards in the past.. who else was there to give it too?! She's backed it up in doubs, and hasn't always been commited to her singles. But this year she has obviously made a few changes to her dedication/work ethic and attitude which you can see through her results and also by what other board members have commented about seeing her play. That she's fitter than ever and playing great tennis.

You can't even compare an up and coming Junior to Leanne right now. I'd be surprised if Sascha would win a match in qualies even.. she hasn't beaten anyone decent on the tour. But yes I agree give a Jnr a wild card into main.. see how they do. But whereas Leanne's wild card wouldn't be a chance token.. cos her results in the last 4 months have warranted her a wild card.

They gave a wildcard to Marina two years back under the same circumstances. Leanne is having the best tournament of her life, no one can deny that - however Sacha is having the year of her life.
No kiwis are expected to win a match here, but that doesnt stop be supporting them

Marina was not given a WC under the same circumstances because Leanne was not doing as well as she is now. I agree kiwis should get a least two WCs for sure, and they should go to the too best

Of course Sacha having the best year of her life, she's only a teenager; if she weren't, it would be a problem. Leanne is also haivng the year of her life as well and its been better than Sacha's. Also, you say Sacha has barely lost any pro matches this year and that because she's only played four events! She is 6-4 while Leanne is 43-16!

Winning 2 10k singles titles is not a very big achievement in my eyes, there are plenty of players ranked in the top 500 who have won at least 2 10k titles (I email you a list later if you like)

Never said I hate her, Leannes an awesome girl - I have said this is a large variety of threads, please do not tell lie here

Leanne has proven that she can win 10k events and this week has been the best week of her career on the singles scene - however I cannot say that I support her as much as my girls as it has its taken 7 years for Leanne to reach this level and I am waiting to see signs that she can this period of awesome play can continue on.

^^

Sorry.. but i guess you don't have all the facts. This has been the first year (and only halfway through the year mind you) that she has been seen to be working and travelling with a coach. This is the first time she seems to have taken her tennis seriously since her career high ranking.

So to win 2 x 10's (easily) without even putting in shows that she is talented.. but then no one who saw her play would deny that.

Who the hell has Sascha beaten.. has she beaten top 150 ranked players? Has she had consistent showings at 50k's and 25k's?

Yes before the last 2 months she hadn't had a good year.. except winning the 10's, taking Jarmila to 3 sets in the Quarters of Gosford.. but maybe.. just maybe... its because she was injured and had 3 months off?! Its anyones guess as to what she did in those 3 months.. but her results since then have been of top 150 cailbre. So not only is she getting serious and better.. she has got an amazing amount of talent.

Even though Sascha has had a great year (and no one is denying that shes good).. its been on the Junior circuit.. and sweetheart theres a big difference between the Juniors and the Seniors..

haha yeah.. well it would've looked bad giving all their wildcards away to internationals! Even so two years ago you could see Marina had fire.. so why wouldn't you. But this year is different.. you've got Marina/Leanne/Sascha and then Ellen who has come through in the last 3 weeks and had some solid results against some high ranked players. Two years ago there was what.. Leanne, Ilke and Tracy and the injured Marama sisters? Nikki Tippins would have done better to come out of retirement...

Well Leanne is a talented tennis player. It is not easy winning any type of ITF tournament. She has been the top ranked NZ player for the majority of the past ten years. She plays Fed Cup and yes she has had a coach over the past few months. The coach has been quoted in an interview saying that Leanne Baker has the potential to win Wimbledon! I mean that is a bold statement to make. She has such a unique game. Wicked lefty kick serve and is the best volleyer in NZ. She plays Fed Cup and is someone who is committed to New Zealand. She has won the Residental tennis champs many times. She really has dominated New Zealand tennis. I am really happy that she is still slugging out on the circuit and 2007 will be her year..she will be playing qualifying tournaments for the Grandslams which will be wicked to see

Obviously the people who post on here aren't "real" tennis players. Can I ask how many of you people have actually played an ITF tournament? Probably none of you guys. You talking about January this year? After she announced that she would have to give back the wildcard (and give it to Vika instead) she didnt even touch her racquet for like a week. I could tell how devastated she must have been, she could do quite well at the ASB given a nice draw. I must admit I hope that she does decide to play with either Sacha or Ellen, just to try and see whether we can get a good kiwi doubles combination together (thinking about Beijing 08). Although its more likely that Marina will play with an international player, im not quite sure who though - theres a few players here that shes played doubles with before

I just hope that Sacha gets Leanne in the first round...that would be a 35minute match to Leanne!

The residentials is a very weak tournament this year I must agree. Although Marina often doesnt enter it very often and Sacha is too busy doing the tennis drills of her life!
I thought Ellen was down on the initial entry list, but after she got the quali wc I guess she thought she better into some serious training.

Leanne wasnt on 1 last night???

Next weeks lineup on the news looks pretty blank and from what I understand there filming some of Erakovic training in the next week for certain and that they'll try stick in a time for Sacha next week too (unless the sports news is packed)

The replacement maindraw wildcard will be announced tomorrow, from what I hear Ellen has applied for this along with several other girls including Kairangi Vano - Martina Muller initially applied for it but after VRP withdrew she didnt need it.

Also the singles quali draw will come out tomorrow, so Ellen will be in the news in some form or other

Ellen Barry is set to verse Meilen Tu (the 2nd seed) in the first round qualies tomorrow! Meilen is a former champion of this tournament and is expected to win this match very comfortably.

Very bad news for kiwis in qualifying all round as 3 of them are versing seeds in the first round and only one who isnt is Shona Lee (who has lost to many unranked players in the last 12 months).

The New Zealanders have received daunting draws in the first round of the doubles at the ASB Tennis Classic in Auckland.

Wildcard Marina Erakovic and Italian Sara Errani have been pitted against the top seeds, Argentina's Paola Suarez and Slovakia's Jeanette Husarova.
