It's going to be interesting to see what adjustments and improvements Makiri has made in her game during the off season with her coach Nigel Sears. Hopefully, she will start the new year with encouraging signs of progress and success. Good luck Makiri!:)

Another Maria lines up for fame

By Amy Harris November 29, 2006

RUSSIAN beauty Maria Kirilenko will grace the Gold Coast tennis scene from December 31 when she plays in the Australian Women's Hardcourt championships at Royal Pines.

Kirilenko shot to fame at the Australian Open this year when she donned a Stella McCartney-designed outfit.
The addition of Kirilenko and inuury-plagued American Chanda Rubin has ensured 12 of the world's top 30 players will be on show in the Gold Coast tournament.
"To have Maria in the field just adds another exciting dimension. Not only has she achieved some outstanding results over the last couple of years, but she has been at the forefront of tennis fashion which means she's always exciting to watch," tournament director Liz Smylie said.
"For a 19-year-old, her performances indicate a big future ahead. She will definitely be one of the players to keep your eye on."
A former junior grand slam champion, Kirilenko has been one of the rising stars on the WTA Tour, starting in 2005 when she claimed her first title and rose more than 80 ranking places.
She joins fellow top 30-ranked players Martina Hingis (No.7), Dinara Safina (No.11), Ana Ivanovic (No.14), Sam Stosur (No.29), Anna-Lena Groenefeld (No.19) and Israeli Shahar Peer (No.20) in the Coast draw.
Rubin will kick-start another comeback when she takes to the courts.
A crowd favourite who hit her highest note at the Australian Open in 1996 when she reached the semi-final, Rubin has had injury problems since she underwent surgery on her left knee in 2001.
Since then the Lafayette native has gone under the scalpel three times and withdrawn from six tournaments with ankle, knee and shoulder injuries.
It has been a disappointing spell for the 30-year-old, who has finished a year inside the world top 15 on five occasions and reached three French Open quarter-finals.
Smylie said: "She's been one of the world's top players for a long time and her experience will mean she will be a tough opponent."

an interesting choise to step up from Auckland considering her form this year, I hope it goes well for her, she needs to get off to a good start in 2007.

an interesting choise to step up from Auckland considering her form this year
Yes, especially as she got to the quarters in Auckland 2006. Anyway best of luck Makiri, and I hope the time off has been beneficial ;)

Dec 8th, 2006, 03:54 AM
Still pushing up on her tournament choice eh? I hope it pays up.

Dec 29th, 2006, 04:41 PM
Not an easy draw -

Maria Kirilenko RUS vs Flavia Pennetta ITA
Elena Likhovtseva RUS vs (2)Dinara Safina RUS

Dec 29th, 2006, 05:18 PM
Oh Maria. :(

Even if she does beat Flavia, she'd have to worry about Safina unless Elena upsets her.

Dec 29th, 2006, 06:26 PM
She is in the tough part of the draw. She's going to have to play very well to get out of it. Good luck Maria!

Dec 29th, 2006, 08:28 PM
Another difficult draw for Maria? I haven't seen her get a decent draw for a longgggg time :( Hopefully she has done what she needed to do to improve in the off season and is ready to improve upon her results from the Australian Summer last year!

Dec 30th, 2006, 12:21 AM
Good luck Maria! :)

Dec 30th, 2006, 06:09 AM
Good luck Maria. Will be a tough match but she should win.

Dec 30th, 2006, 07:41 AM
Should be a toughie against Pennetta but good luck Maria.

Dec 30th, 2006, 09:44 AM
Another tough draw!! Same as last year! She never had the luck of the draw in 2006.

GO for it Masha!!!

:bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

She is playing doubles with Shahar Peer and they are the #4 seeds

Good luck in doubles :)

Dec 30th, 2006, 12:31 PM
Tough draw!

Dec 30th, 2006, 12:45 PM
Davaļ Makiri !! :rocker2:

Dec 30th, 2006, 01:30 PM
:awww: Damn, how sucky is that
Oh well, do u best Makiri and start the year with at least one win, would do wonders for the confidence! :D

Dec 30th, 2006, 05:13 PM
 Against last year's losing finalist..
Flavia has got some points to defend, it is going to be hard for our little Masha.

But I am sure she can pull it off.

:bounce: Good luck, Maria :bounce:

Dec 30th, 2006, 06:04 PM
She doesn't have an easy draw :o .

:bounce: Goold Luck Maria !! :bounce:

Dec 31st, 2006, 07:42 AM
It isn't an easy draw, but I do believe her potential.
She can pull it off!

Jan 1st, 2007, 10:30 AM
maria has just won the first set 6-1 against penetta

Jan 1st, 2007, 10:37 AM
Fantastic set Maria! :worship:

Jan 1st, 2007, 10:39 AM
Keep up the awesome play Maria, good luck in set number 2, dont let her back into it.

Jan 1st, 2007, 10:46 AM
Her serving stats for the forst set were  :worship: as well! :D :bounce:
But Flavia is playing like crap it seems too, but good to see that Makiri is taking advantage of it! :yeah:

Jan 1st, 2007, 11:05 AM
Awesome play from Maria so far! Hopefully she can keep this up!

Jan 1st, 2007, 11:45 AM
I think Flavia retired at 1-6 1-3 but not sure. The result is still not posted at the Mondial website. Masha was well in command.

Hope Masha is ok:bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

Jan 1st, 2007, 01:58 PM
Something not right about this. The site has all the scores posted except Masha's. I've only ever seen this once before when someone was defaulted and there was an appeal.

If so, I hope it was not Masha.

Maybe the people there forgot to put the score up and went out too party

Jan 1st, 2007, 02:27 PM
Yeah its really weird... the SB froze at 3-1 in the 2nd and even www.livescore.com still has the match at 3-1 in the 2nd & also has the match as being played
AHHH, this is so confusing! :p

Jan 1st, 2007, 02:54 PM
Good news from kaza at wtaworld!

"Nah Kirilenko won. I just came back from the event just then. She smoked Pennetta! She played really well and didnt really let her into the match!"

I didnt say the score but Masha won in straight sets

Way to go!

Jan 1st, 2007, 04:20 PM
Makiri won 6-1 6-2 :D:D:D !!!!! Yeah !!!!! :D:D:D

Jan 1st, 2007, 04:36 PM
Thats Fantastic! Who does she play next?

Jan 1st, 2007, 05:00 PM
Great News! Nice start! Makiri! Go for it!

Jan 1st, 2007, 05:27 PM
Maria!

Great job! :D

Keep on winning please! :hearts:

Jan 1st, 2007, 06:32 PM
Awesome win Maria! Next up is either Safina or Likhovtseva! Good luck Makiri!

Jan 1st, 2007, 06:33 PM
Well thats a good start of 2007 ! :)
Happy new year everybody btw

Jan 1st, 2007, 07:31 PM
A great win and start. If she plays Dinara next, with the same conviction, she will win.

Way to do it Masha!

:bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

Jan 2nd, 2007, 04:34 AM
A good start to 2007. A good win for Masha against a quality opponent. Hopefully Maria can build some momentum this year and have some positive things happen this year.

Jan 2nd, 2007, 04:56 AM
yeah! good luck to makiri!!!

Jan 2nd, 2007, 07:08 AM
Davai Makiri:yeah: nice win keep it up!

Jan 2nd, 2007, 07:39 AM
What a fantastic start to 2006 I really hope ythis is the start of an awesome year.

Jan 2nd, 2007, 02:37 PM
Go Makiri!

Jan 2nd, 2007, 02:42 PM
WOOHOO :woohoo:
I think I am totally speechless coz I am so stoked!!! :D :D :D We couldn't have asked for much more from her for her 1st match of the season, great job Makiri :yeah:

And I can't believe this, out of all my girls, Makiri basically won the easiest and I think she probably had the toughest opponent too! :bounce: Who woulda thought that would happen... She should play in Australia ALL the time :p

Jan 2nd, 2007, 05:02 PM
Makiri & Peer beat Jarka & Bryanne 7-5 6-3 in less then an hour and a half...
To be honest, I was kinda hoping they would lose coz then she would realise she should only play with Ana :p & Jarka would still be in it, but mainly coz it would mean she could concentrate on singles... I don't mind her playing dubs when her she isn't do well in singles coz it gives her more match play & practice but when she is doing well in singles, I worry about her doing too much...

Jan 3rd, 2007, 02:57 AM
:woohoo: A convincing win! when was the last time we had those? :woohoo:
AWESOME! Keep it up Makiri!

Jan 3rd, 2007, 03:15 AM
Good luck in your next match Makiri against Safina!:)

Jan 3rd, 2007, 10:06 AM
6-2 6-5 to Safina now.... Maria is serving

edit: 6-2 7-5 for Safina :(

Jan 3rd, 2007, 10:09 AM
Makiri lost 6-2 7-5

Jan 3rd, 2007, 10:51 AM
I totally blame my friend :fiery:
She was doing well & fighting back etc in that 2nd set and then a friend of mine arrived and I had to leave the livescores & she had lost by the time I came back :sobbing:
He has done this too me before as well, gives us someone to blame at least ;) :p

But I think to be honest, that was a solid match from Makiri from such a tough opponent, especially considering how she was playing at the end of last season... That is an improvement form last season so I think all is positive for Maria right now! :D :bounce:

Jan 3rd, 2007, 11:01 AM
Oh, gosh...

Jan 3rd, 2007, 11:16 AM
Although she lost the fact that she just kept fighting a didnt wilt was a good sign.

Jan 3rd, 2007, 11:50 AM
Dinara is a good player, but up 4-2, it's important to close, and to hold.

Jan 3rd, 2007, 12:29 PM
Poor Maria
Nice first rd win though

Jan 3rd, 2007, 02:08 PM
To me, this wasn't good enough. Maria has to improve, or she'll be where Vera D. is.
That's doubles, and singles qualies.

That's a dissapointing loss for Maria. Sure Dinara is a better tennis player than Masha is but Masha didn't even make it interesting when she had the chance to. :( And Kirilenko still struggles to hold leads in sets when she's down a set. I hope this isn't a bad omen for 2007.

GL, I doubt Maria's game will slip as much as Vera's game did. I expect Masha to be a top 40 player this year and if she's healthy and plays relatively well make a run at the top 20 again.

To me, this wasn't good enough. Maria has to improve, or she'll be where Vera D. is.
That's doubles, and singles qualies.

I have to agree with GL on this one. Perhaps we were all too optimistic after her first match and we probably forgot that Flavia returned after a 4-month injury break.

Purely based on the statistics, it was a rather poor performance by Maria, with an exception for the first 6 games in the second set.
In the first set she didn't even get near Dinara. She had a first service percentage of 58 and a total of 13 out of 26 service points won. Especially on her second service she hardly won any points, 3 out of 11. Her return was even worse: only 4 out of 20.
The second set seems to look better with a first service percentage of 75, 25/44 service points won (5 /11 on second) and 10/31 returns points. But at 3-2 she had a 1st service percentage of 90, so in her last 4 service games she dropped 15%, or, in other words, she had an average of 68 percent. That's how you get broken, twice.

She'll have to improve and she has to do it quick. She has got a lot of points to defend, 241 in the first 2 months, and the way she is playing right now makes me really worrying about her ability to defend them successfully. She might even risk dropping out the top 50 by the end of February. And that means she will have to play qualies and no more byes in Indian Wells or Miami.

Jan 4th, 2007, 01:47 PM
Maybe Hobart will give us a better indication of her form. Most of the field are players ranked in the 30's, where Maria is at the moment. Its where she will be at the end of the year thats a concern.
