Nicoals Kiefer posted today on his website

I had a feeling that Korea would not be able to partake, but is there anything other than on his website that makes it official? If this is for real, than Anna-Lena better be his partner.

Um yeah... :o I know I was one of the ones saying about how Korea didn't deserve a main draw spot when they were given one, but I would have much preferred Korea over this German team. I can't stand Kiefer  And Martina is not the type of player I enjoy watching, I wouldn't have minded watching Anna-Lena play again, but Martina :o Hopman Cup 2007 is unfortunately getting worse as it gets closer. :(

Germany Into Hopman

2006 Australian Open semi-finalist Nicolas Kiefer and team mate Martina Muller, ranked 34, have answered the call up to replace Korea at this year’s Hyundai Hopman Cup. Korea were forced out of the tournament yesterday after Yoon Jeong Cho injured herself in a practice match. Germany will join USA, Australia and Russia in Group A giving the Aussie combination of Alicia Molik and Mark Philippoussis a tricky second match.

In further news, Kiefer is not the only late starter in Perth, due to the introduction of Daylight Saving in Western Australia, all sessions at Hyundai Hopman Cup will commence one hour later. Day Sessions will start at 11.00am and Night Sessions 6.30pm with the Friday night Final commencing at 6.00pm.

Germany will seamlessly replace Korea in the schedule so will face the defending Champions USA in their first match on Saturday evening 30 December. Muller will play 5 time Grand Slam Champion Venus Williams and Nicolas Kiefer will face Taylor Dent. Their third match is against number one seeds Russia. There are no other changes to the schedule.

Kiefer played Hopman Cup for the first time last year, winning matches against Gaston Gaudio and Wayne Arthurs before taking his good form to Melbourne for a career best Grand Slam semi-final appearance where he gallantly lost to eventual champion Roger Federer in a four set match. Later in the year he was a member of Germany’s team that made it to the final of the World Team Cup.

24 year old Martina is the second ranked German player and is in career best form, reaching the semi-finals in Budapest, finishing the year with a WTA ranking of 34. She won 4 tournaments on the ITF circuit in 2006: Civitavechia (Italy), Cagnes Sur Mer (France), Baden Baden (Germany) and Bordeaux (France).

Tickets for Hyundai Hopman Cup are now on sale at all Ticketek outlets.

Hyundai Hopman Cup XIX, to be held from 30 December 2006 to 5 January 2007, is the Official Mixed Teams Competition of the ITF.

I am thrilled!!!! Anythin was better than South Korea. Makes Australias draw much harder. Instead of Winning onli 1 tie against Korea, it will be 0.

Actually, I quite enjoyed the South Korean team.

NOT!

Anyway I hate Martina M's grunt it sounds so retarded. I've only seen her play once before when she lost 6-1 6-2 to Kim at US Open 2005 first round.

It is an improvement on Korea ranking wise, but for me I'd rather watch Korea just because I really dislike both these German players :( Give me Tommy and Anna-Lena any day.

Point taken, although I don't really enjoy cheering against people all that often, what are you going to do, watch them lose and then say "HA! Take that, you lost!" and then sit there feeling some sort of achievement that the person you wanted to lose lost.

No ya dont cheer for them losing (unless it is mark), ya just go for the other person, then at the end ya can go the person i was going for won. I actually dont mind Kiefer, he is annoying but i can put up with it, and i havent seen Muller play live, so i will reserve my thoughts till after she plays Venus

If I had half a brain I could have figured this out myself  I never used to have an opinion on Kiefer but I've got the impression that he is pretty immature and thinks highly of himself. That gets an immediate thumbs down from me. :D

That's just the way he appears, but this is completely wrong.

I am from his hometown and here, he is a big sponsor of a charity thing calles "bed by night". He raised over 500.000€ so there could be a shelter for homeless kids, so they could sleep safely at night, eat, take a shower and so on.

Plus, he has this special relationship to a young guy who is severely ill and visits him when home.

I think he always just appears like the bad guy, but he obviously has a good heart. :)

On his website Nicolas Kiefer writes that he can't play the Hopman Cup because it's too early after his injury... so I wonder who will replace him/Germany

I'd rather them invite a new team! Who else is there? I don't really enjoy watching Mayer play. Never watched Kohlschreiber. How about Schuettler? Is he even still playing? Tommy Haas? Schuettler or Haas would be fine, but I think they should start panicking and try to get a new team if neither of these guys will play. Argentina? It's not as if Dulko has much to defend anywhere, and she's not exactly guarenteed to win matches in other tournaments. She seemed to enjoy playing here when she did. And then for the men there is plenty of choice. Nalbandian would be out of the question (I think) but then there is Gaudio, Coria (not sure how he is with his injury), Acasuso, Monaco, Chela... if they can get them then why not do it? I'm probably not being rational though as I don't really want to watch Germany. :D

Kohlschreiber is really nice to watch sometimes and he's a great player if he is on... he would be a possibility.. also Benny Becker... Haas would be the best choice of course, but I dont think he'll play, because after he played it in 2005 he had a terrible year
Schuettler is still playing, yes, but he's in very very bad shape since 2004/05 and although he would be in good shape he's still boring to watch  same for Phau and Waske (ok at least he shows some emotions ;) )
As a up and coming player they could invite Mischa Zverev...

They should invite Alexander Waske! He is cool and with Kiefer the only german Tennis player at the ATP I like. He plays good tennis and not this 0815 type of player. It's fun to watch his matches.

Tommy also has personality and a game which is 1000000 times nicer to watch :ras: ;)

I don't like Waske in singles because I don't wanna see about 80% of service winners and return errors  But in doubles he really brings some pep in it ;)

They should invite Benjamin Becker for Nicolas Kiefer.

Maybe he has chances against Mardy Fish, because I don't think that Martina Muller has any chance against a Venus Williams.

Alexander Waske is dull as a nut but he is really cool in playing for his country, cos he is really keen to represent Germany whenever he's given the chance to do so.

But we gotta face it - our times of dominance are over and will not return for quite a while.

It' already over for a long time but I don't really mind... Haas and Kiwi are 2 great players ehich I like a lot more than Becker or Stich :)

I think we'd all really like to know. But last time (yesterday) I checked the Hopman website it was still Kiefer/Muller. So whether the organisers are still trying to find another German player, maybe they can't get one to play, in that case they would have to find another team. Either that or the organisers don't know that he can't play, but I don't think that would be likely, Kiefer would've notified them saying he couldn't play.

Just checked the website and it still has Kiefer as the male player on the German team.

I'm happy with France as the replacement. Tatiana & Jerome are a better team than Martina & whoever would have substituted for Kiefer.

I'm much happier with France than Germany :D Sorry, I haven't minded watching Germany the past few years, but without Anna-Lena I lose interest int them. France haven't competed at the Hopman Cup for a few years so it's nice to get them back. I prefer watching Tati to Martina. :D
