View Full Version : Hasselt Tier III calls it quits

<Sven>
Nov 18th, 2006, 12:25 PM
Bob Verbeeck has said that the Hasselt tournament won't be organized in 2007.
The tournament will move to Kitzbühel and will start on July 23.
Bob Verbeeck says that the reason is that the WTA doesn't give Tier III tournaments enough possibilities to attract top players...

 but it'd pretty much be a goner due to it's placement on the calendar/after kim's retirement

 It's not a loss :) Just sad a tournament that is not too far away from me disappears. But really, it's a crap, overpriced tournament.

Wait a minute  So Gaz de France will now sponsor the ATP event, or Kitzbuehel will also have a WTA tournament?

Typical Verbeeck  I wonder how long the Antwerp tournament will last after Kim's retirement :tape:

I dont understand the reason for not attracting top players. Its had top 10 and at least top 15 players there eg, Clijsters, dementieva, Schiavione, Safina etc.

Great! How is Caroline Maes going to be able to defend her points next year! :(

The sole purpose of this tournament was to please Kim. Antwerp will probably be cancelled in 2008 too :o

the end of hasselt doesn't mean the end of Antwerp. Antwerp is a tier II tournament and it's better scedueled then Hasselt. I think Antwerp will stay for a few more years.

why should antwerp be cancelled? it's always had great fields, big names, high ranked players. and even trying to move up to tier1 status. doing pretty well, i'd say

I'm sad to see it go, even if there wasn't any atmosphere. It was a good tournament to see some lower ranked players in action. Oh well, we'll have to wait for the next Belgian top tennisplayer to have such an event, but I'm afraid I'll be dead by then. :tape::p

Let's hope Antwerp won't follow Hasselt's lead...

Too bad, but maybe it was nice to have shipped it over to the Netherlands. Our players are much more Tier III level than the Belgians. ;)

I don't know if she's still pregnant. I hope she'll return even though she's almost 30

I wouldn't say so, the players were treated like if it were a Tier I tournament.

If everything is going according to plan, Antwerp will become a Tier I tournament. Also, there are plans to make it a tournament for both men and women.

I'm sad I've never attended this tournament, it's so close from my home...

I don't think Antwerp will be cancelled as well, there were plans that it becomes a Tier I tournament within a few years, and I hope it becomes an ATP tournament too! Belgium needs an ATP tournament :D

But I don't get his reason....

Hasselt was so close from my home every year. :(

The whole tour is being reorganized.

I was in Hasselt at all the three tournaments, it had a great field but no ambiance and atmosphere. Belgiums only liked this tournament at the moment Kim was playing. I liked Knokke-Heist much more, but after one year Brussels, this tournament also dissapeared.

It is sad, but what can we do about it?

Yeah, it should be better if they put Kitzbuehl on the 30th where there's only 1 tourney at the moment.

Sad to see Hasslett go.

If the WTA is serious about shortening the season- perfect perfect perfect oppoprtunity to shorten it for at least 1 week now by moving Madrid to that week- ideally moving Quebec City (to the week after the US Open- but even if they don't still put madrid there).

As for Kitzbühel mving tot he same week as Stanford & Budapest- how dumb.
Move it to the week of San D when there is no Euro tounament.

(So it would run: Palermo, Budapest, Kitzbühel & then Stockholm in consecutive weeks)

Has Kitzbühel ever held a WTA topurnie before? I knmow Austra has Maria Lakowicz for a few yeras??

Where do you know from that Hasselt and San Diego are cancelled?

Any official confirms? It doesn't seem true. In 2007 both HASSELT and SAN DIEGO will take place :bounce: , look here at the official WTA Tournament calender 2007:

Oh yeah, and if you want to shorten the calendar, it's these and some of the other unnecessary events (i.e., LA in the US Open Series) that need to eliminated.

The USTA wants to keep the USO series.

Then they need to get the tourneys to pay up (which we are already seeing that they can't afford to).
