View Full Version : Anna Chakvetadze's rise to the top 10.

Anna Chakvetadze in 2006 won 1 match before Indian Wells.
She's ranked 13 right now.
Starts in Hobart, then Sydney and Melbourne, on her way to the top 10 :worship: :bounce:

It's going to be hard for her with Vaidisova and Jankovic still in front of her.

Plus Ivanovic is not far behind.

Anna can do it though. :)

It will be difficult to keep Anna out of the top 10

It will be very hard for her to reach the top 10 before IW. The top 7 are too far, Dementieva has nothing to defend in Melbourne, Jankovic won only 1 match before Rome.
We'll see what Anna will be able to do, she is still very young. She has already done something great in 2006 as we can see in the 3rd pic that goldenlox has inserted.

There is 90% chance that she will get there because she has nothing to defend.

It's not supposed to be easy. Anna beat Nadia 3 times in a row.

I still think Nicole or Jelena playing well is too much for Anna.

Nicole and Jelena are a little nuts (in a fun way)
Anna's improvement in the fall was something special.
But she has to keep that level, and move forward

The main difference come the early season is that she WILL be seeded at every event she enters, and often seeded pretty high. If she can live up to or exceed her seeding at each tournament she enters, she can definitely crack the top ten. It's only 250 points up, not a huge differential, and a QF run at the Aussie could really help her case.

That said, she's going to be hard pressed to keep that ranking by year end. While I doubt Schnyder and Clijsters will be as highly ranked at year end, there are easily 5 players with legitimate campaigns to enter the top ten in the next 52 weeks.

You're forgetting that Rebound Ace is probably Anna's worst surface.

Although Jankovic has never made it past the 2nd round of the Australian Open herself, she has beaten Dementieva on rebound ace.

The players in the top 10 really want to stay there.
Patty's probably gearing up for her best chance at a slam, I don't expect her to just wilt.

Jankovic or Chakvetadze should be able to catch up with Vaidisova but if either player has a good Australian summer run while the other one doesn't have one, it's going to be hard to catch up.
Right now I just feel that Jankovic is the player who will have the better Australian summer run.
I don't think it's going to be that easy.

i agree that Jelena is in the position to reach the Top 10 first than Anna C, provided their current form would translate to 2007 season.

Rnk Player Rnk Point PTD b4 IW PTD b4 Clay Season

12 Jelena Jankovic 1211 38 38
13 Anna Chakvetadze 1144 38 131

Ivanovic on the other hand has 154 points to defend before IW and she currently trailing by another hundred.

Vaidisova has to defend 260 points before IW
Safina has to defend 216 and both are ahead by just 200 points margin.

Safe points before IW:

Vaidisova 1132
Safina 1174
Jankovic 1173
Chakvetadze 1106
Ivanovic 899

So it all depends on these future tennis stars, who among them performs better before IW will be Top 10 (in nicole's case, defend her Top 10 position)

TTT, Anna C needs to out perform Jelena Jankovic to get a shot at it, on the current state, I dnt think she is above Jelena's level.

But they could be both Top 10 which is better....

Anna lost to Vaidisova in their last meeting
Anna beat Safina in their last meeting.
Anna beat Jankovic in their last meeting
Anna beat Ivanovic in their last meeting.
Anna lost to Golovin in their last meeting.

Not bad, 3/5.

If she can do that all year, she'll be top 5.
But Anna is on a really nice streak, she's won 2 of her last 3 tournaments.
She beat Dinara, Fran, Elena and Nadia in Moscow.
That's a nice run.

Anna is at a good point in her career. I think the fact that she has steadily worked her way up the rankings and not shot to the top in her first year on tour means she can hopefully avoid the sort of slump some players experience when trying to back it up the year after. Her game improved a great deal in 2006 and there's still more she can do to get even better.

The leap to the Top 10 is a big one. Tough competition for places. I'm sure Jankovic will get there first - she has nothing to defend for ages.

Anna still has a couple of 1-pointers on her 17 best tournies list so there's scope to add more points in Australia. It's not good to get too carried away though. From May onwards there's a lot of consolidation to do and there's always the possibility of injury which could ruin her season. I think Anna made a superb schedule this year and if she doesn't mess with that too much she'll be OK.

This time a year ago Anna was ranked 34 and hadn't even made a WTA tournament final. In fact she was just losing in straight sets to Safina in the first round of Paris and trying to claw her way out of a long slump.

And now she's Top 10 with three WTA titles under her belt! :) It's good stuff Anna, keep it up!

Anna put the doubters/haters in their place

It feels so good when doubters are proven wrong. I always believed in her. I like Sharapova for the fact that it's NEVER certain that she's going to win, and to me that makes tennis interesting. The only woman who seems to be the most intimidating and now she's been consistently losing. I like that there's no Federer of the women's game because it's a lot more interesting that way. So my point to all of that is that I think Anna has as good a chance as anyone to even getting past the top 5. :lick:

I remember i saw a match with her on eurosport about a year ago. She was ranked in the 30s (?) then I think. She lost the match. The commentators then said that Anna's ambition was to be ,I think , Top 5 in the world.

They then had a bit of a chuckle about that, and said something like "It's god to have ambitions, but they should remain withinn reallity"

Would love to play that tape for them now.

There are several players with more weapons than Anna. But very few with more consistency.
