Five of the world's top-20 players will play in next month's Australian Women's Hardcourt tennis championship on the Gold Coast, organizers said Friday.
World No.7 Martina Hingis heads the field, which also includes Russian Dinara Safina (11), Serbian Ana Ivanovic (14), Germany's Anna-Lena Groenefeld (19) and Israeli Shahar Peer (20).
Hingis will return to the Australian event that launched her comeback to tennis last January.
She reached the semi-finals and went on to re-enter the top 10 in August.
Asia will be represented by China's Li Na (21) and two-time champion Ai Sugiyama (26) of Japan. The Australian Women's Hardcourt championship takes place from Dec. 31-Jan. 6 at Royal Pines Resort.

Ah Gold Coast, a lovely little tournament in a lovely little city (okay not so little any more we have been invaded!). Excellent Choice by Dinara, obviously the girl has a high level of intellect;)

I'll be there - woohooo for me:D
Nice that Srebotnik has signed up as well. Dinara has a doubles title to defend & with Srebotnik I reckon she can do it. Not to mention I think they are a good enough team to make YEC next year if they play a full year together - so go girls!!
In singles, hmm semis last year, I feel as 2nd seed she is moving on up this year:bounce:

I read Dinara complained about a Lena L bathroom break.
Dinara - You have to FOCUS. Focus on your game. Players like Sharapova are going to yell, slow down the pace, take bathroom breaks.
Don't complain about cheating, FOCUS.
You have to stay involved in your game, not your opponent's bad sportsmanship.
This is important, keep your concentration until the match is over.

Dinara played well. Started a little slowly as she did in doubles. Hit some fantastics groundstrokes and served very well.
Was broken in the 2nd game of the 2nd set after Likhovtseva took an injury treatment. Overall Dinara had far too much power & Likhovtseva didn't really have an answer. Likhovtseva didn't play poorly, it was a tough draw for her had she drawn many of the other players she'd have won instead she was in the toughest quarter.
Good Luck Dinara:bounce:

Safina accuses opponent of faking
By Daniel Pace
02jan07

CONTROVERSY struck the Australian Women's Hardcourt Championships today when world No.11 Dinara Safina accused fellow Russian Elena Likhovtseva faked a foot injury during their first-round match at Royal Pines.

Safina, the sister of former men's world No.1 Marat Safin, advanced with a comprehensive 6-3 6-2 victory but later questioned Likhovtseva's tactics.
Likhovtseva called for the trainer early in the second set when trailing 1-0.
She returned to the match after being treated for what a WTA Tour official described as a "right foot irritation" and didn't appear to be restricted in her movement, breaking Safina's serve in the next game.
"I don't think she had something, maybe she had, but I don't believe in these games," said Safina, who was struck down with medical fatigue syndrome at the tailend of the 2006 season.
Asked whether Likhovtseva had been playing mind games, Safina replied: "Maybe. I'm not sure if she had something or she may be really hurt but if it really happened then why was she still running on the court?
"Maybe she just wanted to disturb me."
Safina, 20, went on to post a resounding victory to set up a date tomorrow night with another Russian glamour girl, Maria Kirilenko.
It was a far cry from early October when Safina was forced to end her year prematurely due to her health problems, crushing her chances of breaking into the top 10.
"I had no power," she recalled.
"I was standing on the court and had to stop every three minutes just to have a break.
"I had no resistance. I couldn't run from side to side and had to stand in one place and still I was very tired."

It wasn't a bathroom break it was an injury break. It was obvious Likhovtseva wasn't injured before or after the time out. Dinara started slowly but by the middle of the first set was well on top. Likhovtseva didn't have an answer so she took an injury time out. Dinara then served a poor game and was broken but she regrouped straight away and broke Likhovtseva. I agree Dinara has to stay focused. It is all experience though & it didn't hurt Dinara to experience it in a match she was going to win, so that in a tough match at a GS if it happens she will know what to do.

I just got home:)
In the first set Dinara completely overpowered Kirilenko. Dinara was dictating play from the baseline while Kirilenko was pushed 1-2 metres behind the baseline.

In the 2nd set I think Kirilenko started to read Dinara's serves a little better & get more back into play, while Dinara started to make a few UEs. I was a bit worried for Dinara in the middle of the 2nd set when she was down a break because she looked tired & I thought she may be having problems to do with her fatigue illness. But she came back very strong and fought hard. Kirilenko deserved to go up the break but Dinara was too good in the end. I do think Dinara tired in the 2nd set and she seemed to lose some power on serve but she fought her way through it so hopefully it is just to do with lacking match play not the illness she had. It was a very good test though. The 2nd set was very high quality from both girls. imo the best set of the tournament so far. So far there has been a lot of one sided matches and Ue fests but tonight both girls played well, it was a tough draw.

Kirilenko has very good instincts at the net but unfortunately lacks power. I think she should be in or close to top 20 this season. In the first set she didn't play bad, she was just overpowered. I'm happy she came to the Gold Coast cause I'd never seen her play live before.

The crowd got behind Kirilenko in the 2nd set I guess cause they wanted to see a 3rd set and at that point she had been getting hit off the court. I don't think Dinara really liked it but it was a very good experience for her as she will play an australian in the next round.

Dinara played a great game to get the break in the last game. One point she scrmabled well and put a lob over Kirilenko's head. On match point Kirilenko was dictating the rally and Dinara came up with a BH DTL right on the paint.

Dinara plays Stosur. It will be very tough, Sam is a Gold Coast girl & the crowd loves her. The crowd will be on her side, Dinara needs to be ready for that.

H2H Dinara leads 2-0

Moscow 2005 4-6 7-6(4) 6-4
Indian Wells 2006 6-3 6-2.

How Dinara deals with the crowd & maintains her focus will be the key to the match.

No.2 seed Dinara Safina (http://www.tennis-x.com/playernews/Dinara-Safina.php) was the highest seed in action, and despite some resistance from her opponent late in the match she had few problems in dismissing countrywoman Maria Kirilenko (http://www.tennis-x.com/playernews/Maria-Kirilenko.php), 62 75. After cruising through the first set, Safina saw herself in a 4-2 second set hole; but she battled back to clinch the one-hour, 28-minute win.
"It was really high quality tennis and it a really good match for me to play in the first tournament of the season," Safina stated. "I had to fight. She has good hands and isn't scared to do anything. I think she's going to have a really good year."
Awaiting Safina in the quarterfinals on Thursday will be unseeded Gold Coast native Samantha Stosur (http://www.tennis-x.com/playernews/Samantha-Stosur.php), who crushed wildcard and fellow Australian Sophie Ferguson (http://www.tennis-x.com/playernews/Sophie-Ferguson.php), 63 64. Safina has beaten Stosur in both of their prior encounters, the first a 46 76(5) 64 nail-biter at Moscow in 2005 and the second a 63 62 rout at Indian Wells last year.
"She plays well here, the courts suit her, and the crowds like her," said Safina on Stosur. "It will be a tough match. I think who is stronger on the day will win."

Stosur had 2 set points & Dinara saved them both.
Stosur served very very well on the BPs several were saved by big serves. Dinara didn't play badly on the break points.
It was a great match tennis level wise. Both girls played well. As did Ivanovic & Peer the QFs from the other half were not near the same level.

Dinara received several bad line calls in this match. Twice the umpire overruled the linesman in Stosur's favour & the time the umpire should have overruled when Stosur's ball landed well out she didn't say anything. Dinara did very well with staying focused with the crowd heavily on Stosur's side.

The most impressive comeback victory of the new year came during the feature night semifinal, as No.2 seed Safina beat No.5 seed Shahar Peer, 46 76(1) 61. It was a match of two halves; Peer won the first set and stormed out to a 5-1 lead in the second, only to have her momentum halted one game later (after Safina held for 5-2) by a freak rainstorm that blew through the stadium then stopped play for five minutes as the court was dried. The match turned upon resumption and after two hours and 15 minutes, it was the Russian who prevailed.

"She was playing like No.1, I couldn’t believe it," Safina said. "Then, she had 64 51 and I just started going for my shots. I held serve then we had the rain break. I saw her and she seemed to be a little nervous, and I thought, this is it, I have to go for it. I suppose I was a little lucky, but my shots just started going in."

~|Naomi|~
Jan 5th, 2007, 01:36 PM
Dinara got herself into trouble early, she was too passive and wasn't serving well. Dinara was very lucky that there was a really heavy shower of rain in the change over at 2-5, it lasted only about a minute but it blew in under the sails so they had to dry the lines. It gave Peer the chance to think about the situation. Until then Peer was playing flawless, then she started to make UEs and Dinara stepped up and played aggressively, hitting winners. Dinara fought like a top 10 player today, she never gave up. Dinara has to start against Hingis like she finished with Peer, going for her shots.

Key to the final will be how fresh Dinara is. Dinara played doubles they started at 10 and finished around 11, they won 6-1 6-3 so 2 finals for Dinara. Dinara/Srebotnik are a very good team they should target making top 4 & YEC.

Safina sealed it at the first opportunity to claim her fifth career WTA Tour title. The world No.10 said her performance was well above expectations.
“Coming here I couldn’t even imagine that I could win it, I had a pretty tough draw,” she said. “I’m really happy with the way I played the whole tournament.
“Today when I was warming up I was pretty nervous inside. But I could handle my nerves and put them into the game.”
Safina said it was great to be in the winners’ circle again after she was forced out of the game late last year with fatigue.
“I was a little bit disappointed at the end of the year. I had two months off practising hard and I’m really happy that the hard work paid off.”

I finally got to see this match (the final.) Dinara was very deliberate
and measured on court; she seems to be using a lot more variety
of shots; her shot selection was very intelligent; and her court movement
was very good--very impressive.

She also gave a very cute speech during the trophy presentation!
