FIRST TOURNOMENT FOR SEASON 2007:

"One of the most exciting players on the WTA Tour, Serbian Ana Ivanovic will make her Gold Coast debut in 2007. The 19-year-old is ranked No.14 in the world and is coached by Optus Australian Fed Cup captain David Taylor. This year has seen her notch up wins against top ten players Amelie Mauresemo (Sydney) and Patty Schnyder (Warsaw), and defeat six players all ranked in the top 30 to win the Tier I Montreal event, including Hingis in the final."[/

Ivanovic serves Stosur praise
By Paul Malone
22dec06
TENNIS starlet Ana Ivanovic has tipped Queenslander Sam Stosur to race with her towards a top 10 spot next year.

Ivanovic, who soared more than 80 ranking places this year to reach No. 14, is rated by her coach, Australia Fed Cup captain David Taylor, as the best young woman on the tour.

The Serbian teenager could play Stosur in 2007 as early as the Mondial Australian Women's Hardcourt championships, which start at the Gold Coast on Sunday week, after they split the results of their two meetings this year.

Ivanovic has been practising in Sydney for the past week ahead of a season the 19-year-old believes can bring her a maiden grand slam title.

"She (Stosur) is a great player. She has the potential to have a better ranking, the top 20 pretty fast – the top 10, for sure, one day," said Ivanovic, who lost to Stosur at the Australian Open last January before beating her at the French Open four months later.

Stosur is training in Sydney before starting a new coaching association next week with former Australian No. 1 Nicole Bradtke at the Gold Coast.

Bradtke will coach Stosur, 22, at the hometown tournament before guiding her at the Medibank Private International in Sydney and the Australian Open later next month.

Stosur has been hitting at Sydney's White City after a conditioning program under Martina Navratilova's former trainer Giselle Tirado.

Ivanovic, who will be the third seed at the Gold Coast, had wins in 2006 over three top-10 women – world No. 2 Amelie Mauresmo, Gold Coast top seed Martina Hingis and Patty Schnyder.

The Serbian feels she is ready to win a Grand Slam.

"That's what I'm working hard to do. I'm sure quite soon I will reach my goals," Ivanovic said.

Im so nervous. Full of expectations, hopes and fears. How she will
come up?
I watched again Montreal final. How the hell she went from that to
barely winning over 200+ ranked players and tank job in Hasselt QF?
If only she could stabilise her game so i could stop fearing every second
when she will fall apart. If she manages to be kind to my health
i could maybe even forgive her Fed Cup:fiery: but just maybe.
Also thanks to MARYANGEL i revoked Zurich '05 vs Jelena.
Can anyone belive at those numbers? 71% FS and 12 UE:eek:
And i remember of even better numbers in '05.
In '06 she was not close to those stats once and if i hear one more time
"my game progresses" from her i will so smack her.
Please Ana, play well and dont make me do this.
Good post and I know exactly what you mean. I always get pretty anxious when Ana is about to play, mainly because you just donít know whatís coming. With Ana you can normally tell within the first few games whether sheís on her game or not. She has all the talent and she needs to work on her consistency. At this stage itís one great match, followed up by a poor loss. That canít continue.

Feast served for New Year’s

by Ian Burrows

The action at the Mondial Australian Women’s Hardcourts heats up on day two with international stars Ana Ivanovic and Maria Kirilenko on show, as well as local favourites Sam Stosur and Nicole Pratt.

Ivanovic, one of the genuine stars of the WTA Tour over the last two years, starts her New Year with a clash against Italian Roberta Vinci.

The Serbian star claimed one title on the tour last year and, importantly, the win was over her main threat this week, Switzerland’s Martina Hingis.

The teenaged Ivanovic finished just inside the world’s top 100 at the conclusion of 2004 and in less than two years is knocking on the door of the top 10.

Vinci, who came through qualifying, has some impressive stats of her own. The Italian has beaten players the quality of Anastasia Myskina and Vera Zvonareva in recent years and has three tour doubles titles to her name.

Too bad Ana haven't said anything yet about her 2nd match on her site, cause it's the most reliable.
I found this after Ana's victory against Sequera:

Ivanovic overtuigt in Gold Coast
***************************************
**Ana Ivanovic heeft zich overtuigend
voor de kwartfinales van het toernooi
in Gold Coast geplaatst.De Servische,
als derde geplaatst,had tegen Milagros
Sequera (Ven) in de tweede ronde aan
drie kwartier genoeg: 6-1,6-2.

Ivanovic heeft haar zinnen gezet op een
finale tegen Martina Hingis.Daartoe zal
ze eerst de IsraŽlische Shahar Peer en
daarna,vermoedelijk,Dinara Safina opzij
moeten zetten.

It's dutch so I'll translate it.

Ivanovic wants a final against Hingis. But before that will happen, she first has to beat Peer and then probably Safina. The Serbian is confident that it will happen. " I can beat all top players. I proved it more than once. I feel that my game has improved. I'm more powerful and I'm more confident on court".

Well let's hope it's true!

Still no semifinal after Montreal. And how's it possible that she lost her serve so much. I heard she was a break down in the 1st set, so that's already 1 break. At least 1 in the 2nd set. 3-0 down in the 3rd set and then losing it with 6-4 means at least 2 breaks. Of course it's earlier, but please Ana don't make it as dissapointed as 2006.

It's just that she is capable of so much more, and she just isnít delivering on her potential. 2005 was a breakthrough year, 2006 a very average year with the only good result being Montreal, and now 2007 is off to an average start. I donít know what her expectations in tournaments are but I just hope that she isn't accepting mediocre results such as what's just happened in the Gold Coast.

Dexter
Jan 4th, 2007, 10:05 AM
True. I hope she doesn't devolope into another Hantuchova and will stuck forever between #12 and #25 in the ranks. Seriously, that would be frustrating. Yeah, we can say it's early... first tournament, she's only 19, whatever. No excuses. She has to be winning those matches... I can accept when she puts up a good fight (even in 2 sets) vs a top player and ends up as the 2nd best (like vs Maria in Linz) but losing to a player ranked even slightly below her is unacceptable. Boy, I'm lacking words... such a bad day for me. First Ana, then Justine, then I went to uni after Xmas break and find out that there are no classes and of course nobody was bothered to inform us. True. I hope she doesn't devolope into another Hantuchova and will stuck forever between #12 and #25 in the ranks. Seriously, that would be frustrating. Yeah, we can say it's early... first tournament, she's only 19, whatever. No excuses. She has to be winning those matches... I think I have a jinx with picking players like that so I hope Ana breaks through and makes more of herself as well... And I've had a shitty day (turning into week) as well so lets hug

It does suck that she lost to Peer again (especially seeing she was suppose to kick Peer's arse for stealing Makiri :p) BUT every player tends to have another player who is lower then them or about the same rank, who they just can't seem to beat, or really struggle against! For sure I am pissed with her for lossing so early again, but I'm too tired emotionally to really hold it against her right now... Positive thinking instead ;)

I hope she doesn't devolope into another Hantuchova and will stuck forever between #12 and #25 in the ranks. Seriously, that would be frustrating. Yeah, we can say it's early... first tournament, she's only 19, whatever.

I've already said that more than once last year. After loses against Stosur, Kirilenko, Dementieva (IW), Chakvetadze and Myskina.

When she reached the quarterfinal at Roland Garros it all looked fine, but not many great results after that. Last year Sydney gave me some hope again after beating Mauresmo and a close loss against Kuznetsova. Then an awfull match against Stosur and it was gone again. The win over Schnyder can be called a nice one, but we all know that Schnyder sometimes was really bad days. The loss against Myskina was another dissapointment. Only 3rd round in a grandslam. With the score 6-2 6-3 which says enough.
I thought it would happen again against Safina. Ana won the first 2 rounds against 'no names' and then already losing? Gladly she fought back and beated Safina. But Mauresmo was too much.

A new coach. Well it made some changes. In San Diego she beated, Morigami and Frazier (again 'no names') and then losing to Chakvetadze. Again a non result. Los Angels went better. Douchevina, Santangelo and Groenefeld are already better names (although Groenefeld haven't played a good match for MANY months). The quarterfinal was the end again.

Well let me ask you this. What would've happend if Ana was injuried at the start of Montreal? We would be more desperate than now I would say.

Golovin, Zheng, Srebotnik, Safina, Hingis. A nice list and she only lost 1 set.
10 games in the last 2 matches and Hingis didn't even get a breakpoint.
Ana played great!! Why didn't she played like that before? Maybe because David Taylor wasn't there yet?!
We all had high expectations for the US Open. Ana in this form, great things can happen!
It was just all dissapointment. Already struggling in the 1st round against Duchevina. 2nd round, Nakamura, wasn't much better. And in the 3rd round against Serena she served worse than she ever served before. Was the US open just an incident?
Bali, 1st round lost. She hit nothing, she said. Then a 1st round lose against Venus in Luxembourg. After that we heard she was injuried. Is that the reason of her bad play in the last tournaments? Hope so!
Linz was the next one. I got new hope with winning Montreal. More hope than ever! But it was just followed by another dissapointment. In Linz she beated Kraijcek and Radwanska. Again 2 players she has to beat. Nothing special. In the quarterfinal Sharapova played not even at her best, but still it was enough to beat Ana. Ana was always behind and never had the chance to win the match. But gladly And did play well. Certainly better then the last tournaments. The match said A LOT about Ana's development and where she stands. Yes, Ana is getting better, but the reality says that she has a long way to go to the real top. Sharapova proved that. So I had more faith in Ana after Linz. But in Hasselt I got dissapointed AGAIN! Tough matches against number 240 and 244 and a loss in straight sets against Misa.
Still people say, she's young and her time will come. I had to believe that (do I really have a choice anyway?). A year ago people already had to tell me that and what has changed? The win in Montreal changed nothing, cause it was followed by another dissapointment.
2007 a new year, new chances. A good draw. 2 'no names'. Vinci and Sequera. She won, what else can you expect. Then the quarterfinal. The first test. Peer. It looks like that she fails 8 out of 10 tests. And now she fails again. Again just a quarterfinal.

People who know me (maybe some of you here), know that I'm a real big fan of Ana. I always wish her the best and I've faith in her. But how many dissapointments has to follow? I'll never lose faith, but I don't want to become desperate. The next 3 tournaments are Sydney, Australian Open and Tokyo. Great fields so she will be tested again! What if the results are bad again in these 3 tournaments? I don't want her to stuck between 15 and 30. I hate losing and maybe I'm not even a good loser. If I lose I'm dissapointed. If Ana lose I'm just as dissapointed as it was my own match.
For now we STILL can say she's young, but that won't stand forever. In Sydney I will support her for the full 100%, just like any other tournament, but PLEASE Ana don't waste your potential. You can do it so just show it VERDOMME!!!!! (dutch word :p )

Ok, sorry for the long story but I just had to say this.

So much potential, so many disappointments. I remember watching the famous defeat of Mauresmo at the 2005 French Open and I was just mesmerised at her ability. She played unbelievable and I agree that she was a better play then than she is now. How is that possible? How can you go backwards during a time when you should be constantly improving? So incredibly frustrating.

I wouldn't say that. Ana has improved. She moves a lot quicker and her forehand is more a weapon then at that time. Don't forget that all the other girls has improved as well. I guess even more than Ana so it will look like that Ana ain't any better than before.
In Montreal she played her best tennis ever. There will be another tournament like that, but the question is when and also how many. Once a year is not enough of course. (2004 Zurich, 2005 Roland Garros, 2006 Montreal).

Sjoerd, great post... I want to reply to lots of little bits of that but I can't really articulate what it is I want to say...However, for once I'm gonna take on the very optimistic role (which is weird coz I am usually like :shout: :fiery: ) and certainly take the "she is still young" roll...
I know women's tennis is very different to men's when it comes to peak age generally but look at players like Federer & Amelie, what did they achieve in their early years? Not much ( i think and hope to help my argument :p) they peaked later on, Fedz was about Ana's age but Amelie was certainly older... What's to say Ana can't continue to improve & in a few years shoot through everyone... Now don't get me wrong, I don't think she will ever dominant like Fedz, that's basically impossible on the women's tour, but I certainly believe she can reach the same "dominance" level as Amelie, if not do better... No doubt I certainly worry a lot sometimes that she will waste her potential and forever be stuck in the rankings between #30 & #15 as well BUT, if we all start giving up hope in her now and really believing that then Ana will too... Besides winning, all her confidence comes from us & although its important that we don't just say "You'll do better next time " after every loss, its also important to show we have faith... I don't doubt anyways fanship in Ana, I know we all love her and that won't change, but I think sometimes we do need to give her a break (and she needs to do the same for us by winning more :p) and think positively!
Sjoerd, I certainly know how huge a fan of Ana u are so I'm not attacking u (or any1) coz I think u're a great fan and really really valued too & like I said, that was a great post! :yeah:

Phew, I don't know where all that came from

Here is my take. Disclaimer: mish-mash, brutal and unortodox parts in it.
Watching back to back matches from different parts of her career
shows that her game is going to much more changes than it looks like
at first.
They trying to make her a complete all court player but for now it looks
like a mistake.
Net play? Is Montreal final among best matches? Watch and count successful
comings at the net and volleys. Almost none, she was flawless from baseline
and only way to lose point was at the net. She wont be good volleyer ever.
Fitness? No training will turn her into Klijsters. Needed fitness level shoud be
to play 2 1/2 sets without much moving, everything above that is not necessary.
There is pattern to her loses, she loses to players that over match her power
(Serena, Pierce) even if they are in bad form. It was funny how that US open match gave false hope to Serena fans, Ana was counter punching BH - sure way to lose that match. In matches where Ana was changing dirrections on her BH it looked like very solid shot, counter punching not. She was even able to construct points with BH in past. And to extremelly fast players that can sustain her power (JJ, Chakve, Peer, Elena). Players that are not exceptional in eighter (speed/power) but just solid are much easier for her. Only two matches im still puzzled about are Poutchkova (simply cos i never see her play and have no idea) and Misa in Hasselt. Unlike her "days off" this was pathetic, she was dominated in every point, not even top 50 level of play. And every BH slice was sure point for Misa. Ana has good offensive slice shame she does not use it more often. Defensive? Better to let that ball go like Davenport, no use.
She is changed position while returning. Kamikase style like Marion. Some WOW return winners but much more gifted points.
Her team is trying to make her better player but they should try to make her more efficient player, she is better player now but less efficient. Work on BH and serve, forget everything else. Too much things can mess her up.
And that beautiful cross court inside out FH is basically useless, she should be forbidden to use it few moths. She waits till ball goes at that part of the court and with that she loses command during points = toast. She is lethal only from middle of baseline (thats reason for beating Tati, she always feeds her there) and for DTL shots.
Strange pattern - most tournaments she did well she had Tati or Kata in her part of the draw. So probably had draw luck put Kata instead of Peer no one would be sad now here but we would dream of her winning Sidney/AUopen.
To summarise, fat Ana plays better than fit Ana. Fat Ana just kills the ball, fit
Ana thinks she can run. NO, she cant and does not need to. She was on Davenport track and somewhere made wrong turn.
Dont expect continual progress, it could all click one day. But time to do that is limited, many yesterdays hopes are fading fast. Replace her Montreal points with another 3rd round (would she beat JJ at that moment?) and you'll see where she is. I think she can pull two good runs this season even if she continues like this. I missed some more details, maybe next time.

Can anyone paraphrase this in 3-4 sentences !?

Good stuff mate, thanks for the update. :yeah:

What was her serving like? She needs to work on lifting her 1st serve %, however I guess thereís a big difference between practicing and a game situation.

Interesting draw in Sydney, and when you look at what others are up against itís not too bad. She will destroy Dellacqua in the first round, and then sheíll face Petrova. In the Hopman Cup Petrova was 2-1, and got stronger as the tournament progressed. However Ana really needs to have a big win in order to boost her confidence for the Australian Open. It really is a perfect opportunity to kick start her year.

Her serve was good he was just harping on the fact that she wasnt mixing it up enough and serving in the same direction over and over. he was also really working on her backhand returns and by the the session she was really blasting them into the corners, that shots has really improved.

Good to hear on both counts. She must work on improving her return because at this stage she gives away far too many free points. At crucial stages of matches she often gifts the point to her opposition by not even getting the ball back into play. Definitely one area where there is still a lot of work to do. Pleasing to hear Taylor is working on it.

It's a decent draw really considering the field. We couldn't really expect anything else. Ana should dominate Casey, something like a double bagel to be honest. And contrary to everyone else, I think Ana does have a decent shot against Petrova! She can win this, we just need to remain positive. Ana must not have been playing that well to actually get down a break against Casey. However, maybe she is still getting some of the rust out and is going to come out playing flawless against Nadia. Let's hope so at least. I am still hopeful. Ana's got the type of game that matches up well against someone like Nadia so we'll just need to wait and see. A Serbian semifinal match up would be wonderful!!!

katie will be there, right? we all expect some pix :p
How is 142 (or something like that) pics and 2 vids? I'll post them soon

Hey, I was at the match today. Ana is awesome live. She played really attackingly before the rain delay - Casey was always on the back foot. I was the only person cheering for Ana- people weren't really clapping most of her shots, only some of the winners, she ate a banana in the rain delay! And at the end she shook Casey's hand with a smile and said "Great match"

What a legend, really like Ana, hope she does well. She also looks really fit and has awesome groundstrokes.
:fiery: :awww: NO YOU WEREN'T :p :nerner:
I was there and I certainly was cheering for her, I didn't have the best seats to do so coz I didn't have centre court tickets to start with but then I decided I couldn't miss it and I had to get pics for u guys so I forked out the money and convinced one of my friends and we missed the 1st 3 games but that was fine... I get too nervous and shy to say "C'Mon Ana" (although I had to for Tati) so my friend who was watching her first ever match of tennis (never even seen it on tv, I had to explain what a fault was :D) yelled it out a few times for me and I just WOOHOOed and clapped (even on Casey's UEs :tape: :o) For sure the crowd was all behind Casey so that is why she was able to play REALLY well, the score line wasn't all Ana's fault, Casey did really well! Before the raindelay, like Gill said, Ana was amazing and was on a roll when the rain came, so she sat straight down in her chair and was not gonna go off court, Casey packed up and wanted to but ended up staying. When play started again Ana just was not feeling it & then she started to get cranky and she started to suck even more... At 2-4 in the 2nd my friend said to me "I guess we are going to a 3rd set" and I said "No, Ana is good enough to come back from here and win in 2 and she should do it!" and she proved me right :D I think it was a solid match but nothing special and I thought at the time if she played like that against Nadia she had no chance!
Unfortunately my mission to meet Ana and give her her necklace (& MK's) failed but Josh (Sam Mackinnon) did me the biggest favour today and got them to her, along with Daniela's as well
Ummm, I think thats all I have to say, except in all the pics I got I missed the handshakes (umpire & Casey) and also her kiss to my side of the court :sobbing:

She beat Nadia  I soooo wanted to be there too, I felt like I should have been :awww:
I really didn't think she had it in her & I realise that Nadia retired but Ana was still dominating through out & it was the same injury that Nadia had at Hopman last week & she still managed to beat Tati with it so it certainly didn't affect Nadia too much today I think (hope)
All in all :woohoo: :bounce: :D

The thing is she has to learn from this much, she hasn't got long till next week now and she needs to learn that just coz Nicole is ranked higher then her, doesn't mean that she has to go for EVERY shot and try to blast her off the court... I thought David had been working on her mental game but obviously not... That's the difference between Ana and the other big names, she rushes, can't focus, puts too much pressure on herself and overthinks her shots (especially the serve)... If he isn't gonna work on her mental game then pass her over to me, I may not have my Sports Psychology diploma yet but I will have in 4-6 years

Just watched the second set and here are a few thoughts I have on her gameÖ

Her serve, which only a year or two back was one of the biggest on tour and would be a massive strength of hers, is now a huge concern. She double faulted on two consecutive points at a crucial stage of the second set, and gave Nicole the double break. Her stance seems to have changed a little too, and I see no signs of improvement.

Her shot selection is still well below average. She tries to hit winners from terrible positions on the court and from balls that are impossible to hit winners off. Instead of trying to get back into the rally more often than not she tries to hit her opponent off the court. Her coach has to work on this aspect of her game because itís probably the main thing holding her back. Forget trying to add to your winners count and prolong the rally, itís that simple. Another major concern is her positioning; she seems to get cramped for room frequently which obviously has a detrimental affect on her ground strokes.

She is definitely in better physical shape than the last time I saw her. She looks trim which is pleasing to see. However her movement still has a fair way to go and until this improves thereís no way sheís achieving her goal which is to break into the top 10.

And lastly, every time she comes into the net I cringe. No doubt it is important for her to develop a net game and it wonít happen overnight but some people just havenít got great touch at the net. To be a successful net player itís important to be a quick mover, have good anticipation and to have good hands, and Iím not sure how many of things she possesses. Iíd be interested to see her % of points won at net because it couldnít be too high.

What I wrote might sound harsh but unless she improves the above considerably then I just struggle to see how she is going to realise her potential. She certainly has a long, long way to go.

I was at the match...so disappointed. Every time Ana won a point I would cheer really loudly and Nicole was serving right in front of me and at the end of a rally she turned around (that Ana won so I was like Yeaaaaaaah Ana!)and looked at me and frowned

But Ana's serve was really letting her down, watched her warm up before the match and she looked good. And as she walked past me after she'd packed up all her stuff I said "Good luck tonight Ana" and she smiled and said thank you. And now I am so sad she lost.

I'm really sad. Wanted to see Jankovic v Ana

Considering the way she's played in 2007, yes I would be satisfied with the 4th round. Plus she would gain some ranking points as she only made the 2R last year. I don't have much hope that she'll get past Maria, but it depends on which Ana turns up on the day.

I see it completely different, unfortunately :( . King and especially Radwanska are two really talented and ambitious players who can play much better than their current ranking tells, hadr work probably, while Zvonareva can also make every player struggle when having a good day. Yeah and then Sharapova...
