SEOUL, Nov 15 (Reuters) - Russia's world number two Maria Sharapova will play Lindsay Davenport in an exhibition match in January in South Korea, an official at Seoul's tennis association said on Wednesday.

Sharapova, 19, will face American Davenport on Jan. 1 in the South Korean port city of Inchon, the official said by telephone.

Sharapova lost a previous exhibition match in Seoul in 2005 to American Venus Williams.

Next Tuesday, South Korea will also host an exhibition match between world number one Roger Federer of Switzerland and Spain's Rafael Nadal

I can see arguing the point that exho's probably take zero preparation before hand and aren't that strenuous. But I completely agree that if they want us to believe that the season is "too long", then we shouldn't see their faces around a tennis court for two months.

Well, i don't think it's a bad time for an exo. Good warm-up before Australia. What Nadal and Roger will do, playing after TMC, that's being a money whore

I am going to the Nadal-Fed exhibition next tuesday-can't wait! Wii probably go to Dav vs Maria too. I can see why they play them: Lots of money, less pressure. Whether or not they play exhibitions, the season is too long and they have every right to moan about it. Who wouldn't take extra freelance work if the money was good enough?

1. Who is "They". Don't generalize?
2. An exhibition is akin to a tournament?
3. A "One Day" match makes the
season too long?

It's one thing to whine about someone that plays little
and is not injured, yet still compains. However, you
cannot lay any of that on either Sharapova or
Davenport as aside from injury both do play.

So, let's stop complaining, 'kay. ;)

If it's a match that can help Maria prepare for the 2007 Australian Open then I'm okay with it. If not then it's a waste of time in my book. I just hope Maria has a good offseason and can get away from tennis for about 6 weeks.

I don't think it's a waste of time. It lets tennis fans like me in Korea get a view of the stars, it promotes the sport and people will enjoy it.
And Maria and dav will get loads of cash. Hey, we all win!!!

I actually thought that Lindsay doesn't have that much appeal to tennis fans and crowds, then why the hell is she so bankable in exhibitions that she never missed any year without any offer.

Why dont they have it at the same time as the men's exibition?

who will be more pleased: the tennis fans in south korea who get to watch two great players battle it out or the players who get a huge fee to turn up and basically rig the match?

Ok, it's not ideal but it's better than nothing. Korean fans don't get a lot of opportunities to see the stars so just watching them live, rigged or not, will be satisfying.
And of course the players win. And so they should. They gave their lives to the sport!

THEY meaning Maria and Lindsay... both have said in the past that the season is too long. ... and both are my fave's ;)

Sharapova says season is too long

I can't find a quote from Lindsay but I know she has said it before..

My thing is.. it's still a tournament.... they will have to fly to another country , get hotel, do clinics for their $$, do warm-up at the location, then play the two hour match and maybe a mixed doubles match.
That's just like a tournament. They will probably have a player type party for the VIP sponsors or whatever... it's time consuming so my thing is why shorten the season if they are just going to fill the offseason w/ exo's.

I'm surprised at the negativity surrounding this match! It a marquee match that begins the season for the players, with not much pressure. It is great promotion/exposure for the sport...everybody wins!

I don't understand the big deal. It's on January 1st. Both of them are playing Hong Kong anyway, so why not have a little exhibition on the way there.

These exhibitions are NOT physically taxing anyway, at least for Lindsay. I remember Maria screaming and fist pumping during an exhibition against Angela Haynes a couple of years ago:lol:, but I doubt Lindsay really gives a shit whether or not she wins this. She's not going to kill herself. She gets to explore a new city, promote tennis, and make quite a bit of money doing so.

Agree. Maria likes going to Asia and since she is going to that side of the world anyway - why not play one extra match in January?

As far as screaming and fist-pumping goes, Maria is paid a nice sum of money for exos like this and she likes to give the crowd her best (or almost best).
