View Full Version : Justine : one of the best returners ever ?

When I watched some of Justine recent matches, especially the matches against Sharapova or Mauresmo, I was stunned to see how well she returned her opponents' serves. It was sort of scary.
She made Sharapova and Mauresmo's big serves look like nothing : in the finals, Mauresmo even had a better percentage of winning on 2nd serve than on 1st serve. And Sharapova probably had tons of DF because she was afraid of Justine's returns.

Two other names come in my mind when it's about returning serve : Serena and Venus.
I loved their way of returning powerfully their opponents' serve. But how can someone that "small" return so many big serves so powerfully ?

Any ideas ? (because I'd like to return serves like her ;) ). I've tried to analyse her returns, but I'm no specialist. :)

I think she has good anticipation and she's very fast. Also she has that one bh thing going which makes her effective returning from both sides. She has great technique; just perfect. Sorry, I can't explain the rudiments of the technique.lol.

Justine's down the line backhand return is just so unpredictable and potent when she does them. Go back to RG 2003 and she surprised S.Williams and Clijsters with this return.

2002 Serena was great at returning, but that just went away

She really has such incredible timing and technique - definately one of the best ever. She never lets an opponent relax for a second - she punishes any mistakes.

she has moments when she's good at it and other moments when she's not as good. i'd place her in the top 10 for returning ability, but not above S&V, Dementieva, Davenport, and Clijsters.

I'd easily put JHH above Clijsters and Davenport in returning. Maybe even Venus (just because she makes too many errors straight off the return alone).

As much as I love elena, she is soo erratic at crunch moments on return in important matches as well!! :o Elena definately has her moments of inconsistency throughout the match as well!! Plus lenas returns r pretty flat and hard most of times..Rarely any variety! While Justine can whack the returns or chip and charge if wanna..But both of them have their good and bad moments for sure! if only they were more consistent!!

i think that justine has had good return stats for quite sometime; if not a long time. can't remember when i first noticed, but glad to see that talent now being widely recognized.

I put her right up there, for sure. It's getting better every season.

This brutal return of serve has been a process which she has been working on for several years. Like her forehand, it's much more consistent and deep than it was in say, 2002. What's really cool is the way she's ripping the one handed backhand return with topspin, than approaching the net...a variation of the old "chip and charge" in which the backhand (or forehand, back in the day, heh) was sliced and then followed with an approach to the net.

Above Lindsay?

Lindsay does'nt have to move to create points and winners. She make it right at the first stroke which is mainly serve when ypur serving and return when your recieving.

Justine's good (great even), but I think Davenport is better, and certainly Seles is better....I would be Justine up there close to the top though

I'm rating them based on their matches together and against others. The problem with D is movement. There are some returns she should be getting to if only she moved. (same thing with Seles) which is why I put JHH above Linds.

 What kind of movement when returning are u talking about?

Returning is Timing when you hit the ball.
Returning is also anticipation wether its forehand or backhand.
I dont think there's a lot movement needed to return, specially with Lindsay with such a great arm extension due to her height and long arms.

justine and lindsay are both great returners. justine's one hander gives her arguably more reach and options than does Lindsay's two-hander. serves into the body are handled better by juju also. lindsay might handle high balls a bit better. justine's crosscourt forehand has become a total scorcher. i think i give juju the slight edge in terms of explosiveness and versatility but when Lindsay is having a good day she is also very devastating. Monica Seles and Hingis are also very tough on the return game.

Glad to see that I wasn't the only one to notice this.
