1. Justine: Extroardinary year. May have been even more so if not injured in Fall and Summer. Looked vulnerable in certain matches though. Very deserving number #1.

2. Maria: Won another Slam and the most Tier 1 titles. Probably smarting over losing to Justine over the weekend. Needs to keep getting stronger and add more dimensions to an already tough game.

3. Amelie: The year of her life. Two Slams. Had some rough patches though and that probably cost her the top ranking because of it. Get the Roland Garros monkey of your back Amelie!!!

4. Svetlana: Hardest worker on tour. Damn though, she is missing something in her game to win consistently against the best. Perhaps played too much in 2006. At least she won Miami and got to another Slam final.

5. Kim: Injury woes. Has lots of problems with the top three. Definitely a step behind 2005. Hope she goes out with a bang in 07.

6. Nadia: Can anyone imagine her year had she not got injured at the French and then lost all those matches during the Summer. That about describes her year. She is still a work in progress and when she is on, is still a dangerous foe. Can't sneeze though at 5 titles. Get's to say she was Martina N's last partner in doubles.

7. Martina: Probably one of the greatest of any comebacks of any player that left the game. Didn't win a Slam like a Capriati or Seles did though. She doesn't have the game to beat the best all the time, but she's definitely a tough opponent for most players.

8.Elena: If she is happy with her career as it is, than good for her. Expect more brilliant wins and puzzling losses in 2007. But if she wants to be the great champion she could be, we all know what she has to do without mentioning it........

9. Patty: To me she is the Mary Jo Fernandez of the 2000's. Perrenial top ten player but with not enough stuff to beat the best all the time or win Slams. Still though, she was a wall in 2006. Maybe, like Sveta, overplays.

10. Nicole: Didn't match her fetes from Fall of 2005, but still got to her first Grand Slam semi. Rocket forehand and groundstrokes is gonna get her places if she gets one thing in check: her head.

11. Dinara: Kinda finished with a whimper in 2006. She had so many brilliant moments this year. Kinda like Nicole though. Tons of talent but needs to work on her nerves and mental toughness. Still think she should have beaten Martina in Rome.

12. Jelena: Became the most entertaining player of 2006. What a coming out party. Definitely adds tons of spice to the game and despite a forgettable first part of season, stepped it up big time. Still though, let tons of matches slip away because of a lack of focus she nees to work on.

13. Anna C (or T lol) Had that brilliant week in Moscow. Could use more of that in 2007. But look where she is at now!!! If she can stay injury free I think Anna will be a huge danger to the best in 07. Love that forehand.

14. Ana I: Glamour girl of the tour is loaded with talent. Needs more confidence though and probably could get stronger. Big thrill for her to power past Hingis at Montreal! A definite threat if she keeps improving.

15. Francesca: Animated player let more tournaments slip away. Consistently great year but had some injury woes. She is fun to watch but needs more consistent weeks match after match. Often loses focus in key matches. Congrats on her great doubles year. WIN YOUR FIRST SINGLES TITLE IN 07!!

16. Anastasia: Had her one shining moment almost beating Justine in the Eastbourne final. Hope she finds her focus again and gets healthy. Too much talent to not be going deep in the draw of all her tournaments.

17. Marion: At least one player on tour thinks she can win a Slam;) Consistent year and has proven she has the stuff. But does she have the stuff to beat the best? Perhaps getting a bit stronger would prove her case.

18. Daniela: Slowly but surely finder her groove again. Small setback with the rib injury. Excellent talent and she should be near the best. Hopefully, 2007 will tell a different Daniela story.

19. Anna Lena: Plays too much, loses too much (but had some great moments in 06) yet is a great gal. Always seems to be happy to be out there playing. Luckily, doesn't have the pressure of being called the next you-know-who. If she ever ends up getting her stuff together, she definitely has the makings of a champion. 2007 may tell us more.

20. Shahar: Destined to be a great player if 2006 was any indication. Looked fitter this year and of course she had some brilliant victories. Still though, lacks a lot of confidence often against the best. Needs to have that belief she can beat them week end and out.

21. Na Li: Did great in the Slams this year but struggled with injuries. Definitely has the chance to be a top ten player. Huge game but can get better if she wants to. Kinda of gives off the vibe she wants to be more independent, but let's see what 2007 brings for her.

22. Tatiana Golovin: Seems to be on the cusp of greatness. Terrible luck with ankle injuries this year. Her game though seems to be getting bigger, her forehand a weapon and she is quick on court. Still, needs more confidence and stay INJURY FREE.

23. Katarina: Big forehand and in many ways, 2006 was a breakthrough year for her. Had match points against Lindsay at the U.S. Open. Doubles successes are finally carrying over to the singles court. Top 15 or even higher is not too farfetched next year for her.

24. Vera Z.: Glad to see her some of her emotional woes declined in 2006. She seems to be having tons of fun on court. Won some singles titles and with Natalie Dechy, was the surprise U.S. Open doubles champ. Her reaching the top ten and doing more damage could make Vera a great story in 2007.

25. Lindsay: She may be 30 and had a tough year because of injury, but she proved on many occasions that she still has what it takes. She won't be seen much in 2007, but that could spell danger for her opponents when she does show up.

if i am not mistaken Seles did not win Slam after her comeback, did she?
Capriati too, did not win Slam on the year she return right? i cant remember that though

She win AO in 1996, after that "accident" in Hamburg in 1993.

Monica won a Slam within five months of her comeback. Jennifer actually took a couple of years before she won in 2001.

9. Patty: To me she is the Mary Jo Fernandez of the 2000's. Perrenial top ten player but with not enough stuff to beat the best all the time or win Slams. Still though, she was a wall in 2006. Maybe, like Sveta, overplays.

I like most of what you wrote except this one. It's not right to compare Schnyder to MJF. Mary-Joe (not "Jo") was ranked as high as No.3, reached 3 slam finals (could have won 1 or 2 if her opponents were not all-time greats Graf & Seles). MJ also won slam doubles, was ranked close to No. 1 in doubles, has 2 Olympic gold medals in doubles, etc. Schnyder is ranked 8 or 7 at her best, only reached 1 slam SF. Her career really is one tier below MJF.

I only compared Patty to Mary Joe because they are so similar in how they are (were) in the rankings.

Yeah Mary Jo was ranked up there at one point but only for a brief time in her career. Outside that, she always seemed to be stagnated at the lower-end of the top ten, much like Patty.

But I definitely wasn't comparing their careers. Sorry if it seemed that way.

mary joe would fit much better in a comparison with the lovely lady in my avatar.

i will post my thoughts about each player

1. Justine: great year, showed that she is able to win the lifetime slam, and maybe even a real when she would stay healthy for at least 1 year

2. Maria: won the important 2nd slam, but need to improve her netgame and maybe learn a good slice

3. Amelie: lucky first slam, but second was really deserved. great year

4. Svetlana: i always thing she could dominate the tour one day, but maybe iīm totally wrong. we will see.

5. Kim: i already count the days

6. Nadia: great first 5 month in 2006, but then the injury, will trouble the top3 in 2007

7. Martina: great comeback, and always dangerous for the top players
but canīt see her to win another slam

8.Elena: no comment

9. Patty: i always wonder how she stay top10 since few years

10. Nicole: developed in 2006, need to go the next step(s) in 2007

11. Dinara: she is unpredictable (spelling?)

12. Jelena: Became the most entertaining player of 2006. What a coming out party. Definitely adds tons of spice to the game and despite a forgettable first part of season, stepped it up big time. Still though, let tons of matches slip away because of a lack of focus she nees to work on.

13. Anna C (or T lol): havenīt seen her that much, but when i hear her name her ears come to my mind :haha:

14. Ana I: iīm a bit dissapointed about her season, expected more from her.

15. Francesca: FED-Cup is a Title too, or?

16. Anastasia: donīt look back Nastya - 2007 will be better for you

17. Marion: a smart schedule moved her to the top20, has toprove her talent on higher Tier levels in 2007

18. Daniela: the fall Daniela of 2006 could make some Damage in 2007

19. Anna Lena: great season from Acapulco to Paris, wonder how her season would have ended IF she would have not served the Double-Fault(s) as she held Matchpoint against Sveta in Eastbourne Quarterfinal. need to get a good Coach, and then she should be able to stay top20 in 2007.

20. Shahar: few great weeks, few bad weeks.

21. Na Li: havenīt seen her often, but she can trouble the big names when she is on her best.

22. Tatiana Golovin: had some great matches this year (sharapova - as she injured her ankle) need a year without injuries, and then we will see how good she really can be.

23. Katarina: i think she ended the year where she deserved to be, could become top20 once, but i think top15 or top10 are not possible for her.

24. Vera Z.: had some great tournaments on US-open series, but her fall-season wasnīt that great. we will see how she will do in 2007, up or down - both is possible IMO

25. Lindsay: isnīt she already retired? ;)

My pick:

Justine: Great year, compiling strings of wins when it really mattered most. Never really lost to the 'lower' players this year. However, there is still questions as to whether she can keep up the tempo with getting injured on a regular bases.

Maria: Similar to Justine, had a great year. For Maria's standards and age, she had an even better year than 2004. This time she captured a couple of tier ones and capped it all off with her giant killing run to the championship victory at the US.

Amelie: By far the best GS player this year. Her results say a lot, however, she only truly won one gs final - that being Wimbledon. Stepped it up this year. Would have been her year, had she not continually run into red hot youngsters at the smaller events. Wasn't as consistent as she has been previously.

Svetlana: Reminded us that she is no flash in the pan. When it really matters to Sveta, she really can match the big guns, especially on the red clay. Has the potential and experience to win a major in 2007.

Kim: Another year goes by where Kim has a 'massive' injury. Hasn't had it too easy on the health front, but given a chance she showed us what champions are really made of.

Nadia: This was her year when she really turned up the dial and put herself forward as a threat to any title. Yet, it still remains whether she can crack the slams and take the silverwear home... has the potential for greatness.

Martina: Stunning return. Is giving the tour more diversity, depth and character. Two tournament wins, one being a tier I reflects her legendary status.

Elena D: Is like a brickwall. Her groundstrokes couldn't save her this year, as she underachieved. Has the power, athleticism and mental strength to be a multiple grand slam champ. The serve imporved this year.

Patty: If you took Martina out of the frame, she would have qualified for the YEC. Is a work horse. Got slightly injured leading into the French and the US. Turned things around after the US and gave a routine solid showing from then on.

Dinara: Marat is now riding on the wave of Dinara's success. She has so much to give to the top 10, but her mental strength let her down so often, particularly in that Qf loss to Svetlana at the French. Great year for her!

Nicole: Stand out player in terms of age. Had an explosive clay court season. She shows Maria that the big girls can play on clay. However, she uncharacteristically went quiet after the US.

Jelena: Finally fulfilled potential as a massive threat. Has it all. Needs to work on the serve a little and perhaps the psychological side of the game. Letting Justine out of trouble at the US open was like extracting teeth. Top 10 in 07.

Anna C: Was rather consistent throughout the year until she hit the us open series and picked up some great victories. Her hard work paid off when she brought the Kremlin cup back to Moscow. Top 10 in 07.

Ana I: With so many other great young players, Ana was squeezed down the rankings a bit. Her lone tournament in Toronto echoed a serious warning to the top 10 that her time is soon to come.

Francesca: Another year goes by and she has no title to her credit. She might as well have played in Casablanca and won that.Like Patty, is a wall.

Anastasia M: Hmmm, well a lack of motivation and perhaps another interest in her life seemed to have taken over. In consistency cost her titles, as did that selfbelief that she actually is a top player. Needs to play more, and forget the past.

Marion B: Too many events... way too many. She'll kark-it with exhaustion related illnesses if she's not careful. Has yet to prove that she is worthy of the top 20.

Daniella: ... not much to say. Needs a tournament win. Big hitting wont just win matches.

Ana Lena: Where did she go after the French. Injury plagued this girl. Rather surprised that she managed to stay in the top 20 after such a disappointing European Indoor season.

Shahar: Should be top 15, but somehow isn't. Likes picking on the Russian girls. She has the complete package. Top 15 in 07.

Tatiana: How old is she? Slight imporvements, however, this was rarely shown given her injuries.

Katarina: Loves travelling. Didn't prove that she is a top 20 player, that's why I guess she isn't. Needs to beat the bigger players.

Vera Z: The other comeback queen. Hard to believe that at one stage of the year she was at risk of dropping out of the top 100. Has the game to be a top 10 player again. Needs to improve her groundstrokes and get the mworking more often.

Lindsay: When she did play, she play consistently. Her game is ageless. Played particularly well in New Haven. Should have better gs results in 07.

Justine: Obviously a great year, reached the finals of the five major events and won 2 of them and was extremely consistent during all year and in all surfaces. An incredible will but to me it seems that her mental strength is not as strong as it was in 2003...

Maria: Great year...her first half of the year was not brilliant but after Wimbledon she really stepped it up...her USOpen form was just incredible!

Amelie: Finally the year that she always expected...she started the tour on fire, winning the Australian Open and some more titles and then Wimbledon but the second half of the season was someway strange...it seems like she changed completely her career...from what it used to be a extremely consistent player during all year and in Slams and other tournaments, turned out to be a really high and low year with great highs and some really awful lows.

Svetlana: I also say that she is a hardworker but she lacks something...I really don't know what...

Kim: Serious injury that affected half of her season, although the first half was not brilliant also due to lack of will...still a major threat and obviously the 4th player in the world right now...

Nadia: She proved that she can win big titles. A really up and down season but it was definitely a great season for her...

Martina: Good comeback, her inteligence on court was enough to beat almost all the tour but she is clearly a step behind the top players.

Elena D: Her game is exactly where it was one year ago...a great all court game without serve...when she is on, she is unstopable, the problem is that these days don't come that often...

Patty: Worse year when compared to the last year...she tried hard to qualify for the YEC and to keep herself in top 10 but I really don't know how much time she will be able to maintain it...

Dinara: She has good shots but somehow I don't see her in the top league...

Nicole: Strange year for her...ups and downs but still very young and with lots of time to improve.

Jelena: A captivating player...her game is beautiful to watch she is completley crazy (just like her season)...she desperatly searched for a title this year and ended up overplaying but if she keeps this level, we may see great things from her...

Anna C: Affirmation year...she is there, present and ready to conquer the top 10.

Ana I: Disappointing year...although she won a Tier I title, she was really inconsistent...

Francesca: Like Ivanovic, Schiavone had a disappointing year in my opinion...after the great end of 2005 season, we could have expected better things from her...

Anastasia M: Did she play this year? Her year was really forgetable!

Marion B: Some nice scores and wins...she worked hard to be in the top 20 so full credti to her...

Daniella: Mental case...she has good shots but her movement is really letting her down.

Ana Lena: :help:

Shahar: Good promise...this year will answer lots of questions...

Tatiana: Really unlucky player...always seriously injured when reaching the top of her game...if she stays healthy, she is top 10 material.

Katarina: Good season for her, she seems a hardworker and that paid off...still has potential for better but seems to shrink in bigger stages.

Vera Z: Recuperation year...she started good with a final, then some not that good months and came on fire in the grass and beginning of harcourt seasons...ended up the year in a consistent way and is a expected top 20 player for next year...

Lindsay: She barely played this year so this ranking is not that surprising...I miss her...

Svetlana: I also say that she is a hardworker but she lacks something...I really don't know what...

It drives me nuts to see some of the losses she ends up with. I mean she has everything: powerful groundstrokes, great footwork, seems confident. But when she faces the top players, she seems to step down a notch.
