This is a look, from my perspective, at what sort of season Maria has had this year.

AO GS SF
Tokyo I SF
Dubai II F
IW I W
Miami I+ F
FO GS R16
Birm. III SF
Wimby GS SF
SD I W
LA II SF
USO GS W
Moscow I [wd]
Zurich I W
Linz II W

So, 5 Wins, 2 Finals, 5 Semis, 1 R16, and a withdrawl.

Out of 14 tourneys, Sharapova reached the SF or farther 12 times.
She won 35.7% of the tournaments she entered.
Her Win% entering the YEC is .875 (56-8).
Since the beginning of Wimbledon, her Win% is .935 (29-2).
Since the beginning of Wimbledon, her set Win% is .894 (59-7).
She is 5-2 in Finals this year.
She is 53-1 when winning the first set in 2006.
She has a set record of 112-23 (.830).
She lost to 1 non Top-10 player all year (J. Jackson).
Entering the YEC, she has won 16 straight matches, and 29 of 31.

Personally, I think it is unbelievable. 2007 is going to be Masha's year even more.

Exactly!

This has been a absolutely great year so far after the struggle and disappointment at the end of 2005. More of the same in 2007 Maria :yeah:

FO GS R16

You could count matches on clay separately, then all the statistics are way better, for this year and for the last year as well.

speaking of R16 - it looks better than R4,
but really it could be called OF - octofinal,
in other sports the term "octofinal" is often used, just google it.

Then you get something nice looking even from that disaster with Dinara:

FO - OF

Last tournament of the year, two wins so far in a round robin, sure to make the SF.

One GS (2nd of career), a couple Tier 1's (wasn't it yesterday when they said she was only good for Tier 3's and 4's?), most importantly, enjoying peaks in physical condition, form and confidence.

Best season so far. I hope there's still more like this in 3-5 years. I still prefer '04 because of the Wimbledon-YEC double, not to mention Wimbledon brought her to center of world stage. But this is a better season IMO.

It is not just this year.
The whole period from the China Open in 2004 until now is very consistent:
only semifinals or better in all non-clay tournaments, except Moscow last year, where she had no business playing in the first place.

On clay courts: QF or better in all the tournaments, again with one exception only: this year's FO where she again probably had no business playing yet.

That is the period from the middle of September of 2004 until now !!!

I repeat:
SF or better on non-clay (with one exception)
QF or better on clay (with one exception)

This amazing consistency achieved despite serious problems:
Her right shoulder injury occured in Zurich of 2004 (in the final with Molik) and lasted throughout the rest of 2004, throughout the whole 2005, especially bad in the 2nd half of 2005, and still bothered her in Melbourne in 2006.
And then that twisted ankle this year. And growing like crazy.

What about that?
