Anna Kroulikova hits a backhand to Larissa Liashenko in a exhibition match on Sunday in Eastbourne. The event was played to raise money for the World Cancer Foundation, a charity that is important to Kroulikova's doubles teamate. The match was won by Anna 6-1, 6-7(9), 6-1.

Good friends and doubles partners, Marteena Huubere and Larisa Ferrer share a laugh during a practice session Monday

Marteena told us after their practice: "I am looking forward to Eastbourne this week. I had a suprisingly good week last week, to reach the finals at Birmingham beating some good players has really given me confidence on grass. I've never felt very comfortable on it, but i hope to play well and see what happens. I am also looking forward to playing doubles again with Larisa. We have been a little dissapointed our last few tournaments, but Larisa loves the grass and I hope to learn something about grass court tennis from her! :) "

Good Luck to everyone this week! :)

Jun 18th, 2002, 05:20 PM

"John asked me during the French Open. He wants to play tennis on his favourite grass court in Wimbledon, but only in doubles. I was surprised to hear this. Stefan is sill injured and Andre does not want to play mixed in England, so John will be my partner. This will be great and funny."

Marteena Huubere def. Linzi Paterson 7-6(2) 7-5

Jun 19th, 2002, 03:26 AM
Marteena is delighted with her win! :)

"Linzi was very very tough. She definitely went out there determined to win. I think being able to pull out the tiebreak was important. If she had won that first set, I think she would have gained in confidence. Now, I have to play Tanya. I've done well against her in the past, but we haven't played on grass, and it's no secret that grass is not my favourite surface. I hope to play well, but we will have to wait and see."

Tough luck for Jennifer Selles but congratulations to Tiffani Eggert !

Jun 19th, 2002, 04:06 PM
Kroulikova beaten by Eggert in a close match

''I am really dissapointed, I didn't take opportunity in all the match. I mean, I led 4-1 in the first, second and third set! That shows that she's a great fighter and that I chocked! I think I'm lacking match practice. I think I'll try to play lower tier events after Wimbledon and I won't try to follow Larissa everywhere because she plays higher tier tournaments. I need to get my confidence back because it's pretty low. I'm still in the doubles and we have begun to play solid doubles in the last couple of tournaments. I hope we can do well here!''

Anjelica de la Courtiere opens a can of whoop-ass in Eastbourne

Playing only the 6th match of her career on grass, Anjelica de la Courtiere moved into the second round of Eastbourne in convincing fashion with a 6-1 6-3 win over Barbara Miele.

de la Courtiere has made no secret of her distaste for the surface of Wimbledon, yet showed no signs of that today as she served and volleyed her way to what she later declared her "best win ever."

Still, de la Courtiere makes no bold predictions for this week or the next. "I don't kid myself. I'm not strong on this surface and I don't have high hopes to do well at Wimbledon. Right now I'm just playing my best and waiting for the hardcourt season. I'm definately not going to become a threat on grasscourts," said de la Courtiere.

de la Courtiere will play her second round match against Lara Miele.

'It'll be really tough shes great on grass but i'll try my best and stick to my game and hopefully win'

Lara Miele advances in first pro event

Lara Miele, a promising junior with a career dampened by serious injury, accepted a wildcard at The Britannic Asset Management International in Eastbourne to storm a comeback.

Lara, though, had no idea she would overwhelm Riana Zubir 3-6 7-5 7-5 and advance to the second round in her first professional event.

"It's cool. I'm enjoying this a lot. My life went onto a lot of ups and downs, I had some real family problems that I don't want to talk about them now, it's too soon, but you will have a surprise later. Riana is a great player, she's seeded and I'm very glad I made it. I hope I can finally turn a pro and have a consistent career."

Lara faces next Anjelica de la Courtiere, who upset lil sis Barbara Miele in breezing straight sets.

From what I know...mister, I'm the only one who post pics so even if there were 100 Hantuchova, I'm the only one who post pictures!!! But for Kournikova, there is the Miele sisters(barbara too) and Selima.

And I remember when I came to the tour, there was a thread: ''What does your player look like?'' and I said Anna Kournikova and it didn't take 2 minutes for people to tell me that Kournikova was Selima!

Jun 20th, 2002, 04:39 PM

Interesting to see a match between Larisa Ferrer and Tiffani Eggert! :)

Best of luck to, my BEST partner ever I had, Larisa Ferrer! :p

Jun 20th, 2002, 10:33 PM
straight sets win for all the players in the upper half
that means that the girls are playing some very good tennis!

Jun 20th, 2002, 10:45 PM
Tiffani Eggert in her up and down career has had a lot of trouble stringing together wins. She can defeat Sabine Graf one week and then lose to a 13 year old Anne Gambill in the next. One player, however, she manages consistent success against, of late, is top ranked Larisa Ferrer. "I don't know why I can beat her. Maybe I just like the way she plays," Eggert said discussing her upcoming quarterfinal match. Eggert has an impressive 5-6 match record against Ferrer, and was the winner of the previous 3 matches. Although this will be there first meeting on grass, Eggert at home on faster surfaces is enjoying a bit of luck on the grass this season. Ferrer will have her hands full in this match.

YAY! :) :) :)

Marteena is in the semi's! :) This is a little suprising because of her lack of previous grass experience. She hopes to put up a good match with Larisa in the SF, but expects Larisa's grass experience to be a little too much. :(

Congrats to Sabine and Olive aswell! :)

what a shame that Tanya Hingis cant defeat me and Olive do :o

anyway congrats ;)

An upclose and personal interview with Ecuador's Nicoletta Lapentti

Reporter: First, Nicoletta, thanks for the time!

Lapentti: No problem!

Reporter: Nicoletta, tell us a little bit about yourself.

Lapentti: Ok, I'm Nicoletta Elena Lapentti and I was born on December 11th 1980 in Guayaquil. I have two brothers and a sister. Nicolas plays on the MPTA tour, Giovanni plays on the ATP tour and Juliana plays on the FWTT junior tour. My mom, Gisela is a home maker and my dad Octavio was a salesman before he died of cancer last year.

Reporter: You joined the FWTT tour last year and played very well. You then left for 11 months. Why?

Lapentti: Because of my dad. I got sick and the doctor told him that he had about a year to live. I love tennis but family is much more important and I wanted to spend the last year with him. I knew I made the best decision of my life when he said just before he died, I love you. My dad always loved me but he wasn't the kind of men to say it all the time. I'll never forget that moment.

Reporter: And then, in Madrid, you made your return. Why in Madrid?

Lapentti: No particular reason. I realized that it was the time for me to come back to play. And my good friend Larissa Liashenko convinced me to come back. She's a star. She's a girl that everyone has to learn to know. We met in the juniors one day and we just clicked! Her mom is battleling cancer at the moment and I advice her a lot and we have become a lot closer.

Reporter: After Madrid, you played in the French Open. What was the feeling of playing your first grand slam in a long time?

Lapentti: The last time I played a grand slam was in Wimbledon last year so comming back at the French was very special. I had to play qualifying but that's ok. I qualified and won my first round match before losing to #4 Eva Sorrenta. It was a very close match and I was dissapointed but you know, I told myself, you did the best you could and there is so many things worst then losing a tennis match. I also played doubles with Madonika and we lost in the first round. She is a bit special but I had fun. The funniest thing of the whole French Open was playing mixed with my brother Giovanni. We lost in the 1/4's and in a match, he got aced twice by a girl and he was so mad and I teased him a lot, so it was like 3 against 1! I had a blast.

Reporter: After the French Open, you announced that you would play doubles with Monica Gambill in Wimbledon and during the whole hardcourt season. How did that happen?

Lapentti: After my win against her in the 1st round, I went back to the hotel and got to bed and I was close to falling asleep and the phone rang. It was her and she told me how she liked my game and she congratulated me and then she asked me to play with her. I had no hesitation whatsoever.

Reporter: Now the grass court season. Are you looking forward to it?

Lapentti: Yes and no. I don't like grass that much and it showed in my first round loss to Zerene who is by the way a very nice girl and a fantastic player. The only thing I'm looking forward is Wimbledon because of the history and everything.

Reporter: Thank you very very much and best of luck the rest of the year.

Lapentti: Thank you!

Sorry this is a very emotional moment for Olive,so all she can do is sob.
Although she was very happy to have beaten World no.4 and tashkent Champion Eva Sorrenta ,and Yamada-Miyachi,she knew that she knew that beating Miss Condi would be the acid test of consistency and she's so happy to have done it.This is the happiest day of Olive's life ,especially since this comes on the worst surface of both and Tanya:D:D

Gosh I cant believe it! I was anticipating this match all evening ,and when I saw the result I screamed of joy ,and the entire lab got shaken up.Too bad Tanya couldnt reap the benefits of these points ,as I had 1st decided to have these points for Tanya and Tanya's points for Olive, but since Jennifer did some pre-tournament jinxing to Tanya, Tanya didnt want to humiliate herself against Selles (;)), so she decided to take Olive's points. But anyways I'm happy atleast one of my players made the semis ;) .Gosh the next 24 hours are going to be one glorious time for me.
Good luck to all other players, and most of all good luck to Sabine :D
May the best competitor win :D:D

Anjelica's hate affair with the grass continues. She announced at her press conference that she would not return to Eastbourne. :fiery:

But at least de la Courtiere/Sorrenta won a round.

Anjelica de la Courtiere, despite what happens at Wimbledon, will be the #1 player in the world in doubles.

Tiffani is so excited to be in her first final on grass and her 4th final of the year. Playing Olive Mozzarella will be tough, she has emerged from no where. Tiffani is also thrilled to be in the doubles final with Paula.

Too bad Eggert won the title.

Jun 23rd, 2002, 04:16 AM
too bad? excuse you.

Tiffani is having an incredible year, but too bad she can never win the singles and doubles title at the same event.

Congrats tiff :D:D
I knew I would lose to you ,as you're simply the best now.:D:D
Wimbledon definetily beckons you as a favorite now :D Good Luck :D

I'd like to clear a few things. Gisele ,I was not over-reacting,Olive was genuinely glad in making the finals amongst these champions, and still very happy .On of the best experiences of her career.:D:D

Anabel ,Tanya doesnt think the same either ;)
Really :o

I used you be nice to you, Ms. Eggert, and wish you luck in every event. You're the one that started attacking me first. I don't understand why, but since you did, I'm not going to be cheering for you from now on... that's for sure.

Two bonus points on grass in doubles for winning a tier II.

Three I think in doubles.
