Guys, try not to get too excited yet... Many things could change and no doubt all the 8 will want this title bad, especially Amelie to stay number 1... So try to take it one match at a time but HELL YEAH are we in for a good shot at that title & number 1 spot ;)

Ok, what happens if Masha wins but Justine reaches the final?
I tried to count points and it seems to me that Masha is 20 points short:

Masha - 3532
Justine - 3473
------------------------------
59

Masha needs to defend 235 SF points (if the same ammount as this year)
Justine - nothing to defend.
So Masha: 3532 + 525 - 235 = 3822
Justine: 3473 + 369 = 3842
20 points!

Masha needed to go to Hasselt and win there at least one match.
But, last year there were also bonus quality points?
So even more than 20, then.

Anybody has the exact number?

Good thing, Masha and Justine will probably be in different groups, because they are in the two top positions in the race side-by-side.
But still, Masha needs to play Justine in SF to ensure #1,
some maneuvering with the 3rd round-robin match may help, but if not,
it is just luck then.

I may be a little bit way too far ahead, though.
Masha, please win at least one match.

It's not the end of the world if she doesn't end the year as #1

Masha has had such an awesome year and a title here would cap it off awesomely. She will go in as favourite but Katie is right, we must take it one match at a time because this is an extreamly tough field.

MarkSpot,

Go to Pova's Official Site and find the Cheering Thread for the YEC. In there you will find all the info you are asking about.

BTW, the WTA Tour Rankings are used for seeding the YEC. Consequently, Ame heads Group A and Pova heads Group B.

In addition to the #1 scenarios, there is also info about VERSUS televising all the matches and how to find out if you have VERSUS.

For those who get "Versus", it looks like that network will be showing all three round robin matches each day Tuesday through Friday afternoon with a repeat of the "best match of the day" each night in the evening. Both semis on Saturday and the final on Sunday. So that's great--every match will be broadcast. Not sure who the commentators will be, though.

I tell you Masha since I come to Madrid it has not stopped doing activities, it went to the hairdresser's shop to become divine, one gave a massage to relax, went shopping to ideal shops and in the night I have dinner in a restaurant, I saw her for the TV today here and it is really charming, said in high place I like Spain before getting into the car!

msharafan
Nov 5th, 2006, 12:48 PM
tough group foe maria. i mean dementieva you just dont know and the same with svetlana i mean maria will have to beat svatlana and dementieva which will be very tough and then she can afford to lose to kim but still im worried about this draw, i would have prefered petrova and hingis but aww well what can you do elena and svetalana have better and bigger games than hingis and nadia but lets just hope maria can get to the semis and well take it from there. either way there should be some great quality matches this week! :)

Maria Croft
Nov 5th, 2006, 02:40 PM
I think it's a great group, on current form she should definitely beat Dementieva and Kuznetsova.
Kim, even though she won Hasselt is still only just back from injury, but still the toughest from her group.

Kipling
Nov 5th, 2006, 03:31 PM
YEC should be tough. If you win, you should beat the best. Maria's played alot of matches lately, but no three setters, except Hantuchova, and even though she was nowhere near her best she beat Petrova, who's been hot lately. I think she's got a great chance--if she serves as well as she has been.

I'm not too worried about Kuznetzova on this surface. Didn't Masha wipe her out a couple years ago in LA? Dementieva will be hit or miss, as usual, and Clijsters...well, certainly she's capable of playing some extraordinary tennis, but is she really back? Hasselt wasn't exactly full of challenges.

The way I see it, no one is more consistent than Maria in her results these days, and that should make her a favorite, if not the favorite, in a round robin event--particularly since she has beaten every one of the other seven in the past.

Bring it home, Maria. You can do it!

:yeah:

groups are pretty balanced...
Nadia is better than Elena or Svetlana at the moment...

Edward.
Nov 5th, 2006, 04:13 PM
I feel the group is rather good.

Elena is pretty much Maria's personal punchbag, Sveta's form is questionable, and Kim dropped sets in Hasselt against lesser players.

Confident
Nov 5th, 2006, 05:33 PM
Uhm... Masha is lucky, she's in the Red Group, red is nicer colour than yellow:D
But in serious way... She can beat Elena in straight sets. Clijsters... she had an injury but she's a dangerous opponent everytime, but after defeating her in LA, I think Maria can beat her again. I don't know Kuznetsova's game well nowdays but I believe Maria can win this match too with her confidence.

The other group is interesting as well. I think Mauresmo and Petrova can win there.

Anyway, we'll se it. Good Luck!:yeah:

Maria has drawn pretty interesting group.
Her first match is against Dementieva and I think that should be no problem for her, she's been in great form recently so I'm not worried about that. Hard to say it for me as a Kim fan, but I don't think Kimmie can handle her. Well and then Sveta, IMO she'll be the toughest opponent for Maria but we'll see.
Anyway, I can't see the any of the other 7 girls who can defeat Maria in this tournament. I hope that she'll celebrate this superb year with a YEC win ;)

I think that Masha is the OVERWHELMING favorite entering the YEC.

She is the best in the world, she is playing on a surface she likes, she has won 16 straight matches ... etc.

I believe. But I just need to see it, know what I mean? :) Maria *should* win. She *should* defeat anyone she encounters. Her serve and her groundies are enough to beat pretty much anyone these days. I trust in her ability.

But I can't wait til she takes the court tomorrow.

(Though I HATE rooting against Elena. She is a good gal, beautiful, and so talented. Oh well.)

2nd set: 0 winners / 17 unforced errors, and the 1st serve % was well below 50

Still, the final point was beautiful. There is something good to say about the match!

So, Johnoo, everything looks to be perfect.
Masha played almost as badly with Dementieva as in LA,
so that is a big relief, the bad match is hopefully behind us.
its no different from early rounds at zurich and linz where she started slow,a win is a win, hard to play against Dementieva so its a good start.

The difference might be that in early rounds in zurich and linz she did not have to play top 8 players.
She was lucky today, but Kim is next who is also like Dementieva as far as running down and hitting back almost certain winners (+ splits), so it is a bit worrying.
Still, she can only play better tomorrow, she will certainly serve better, and hopefully the surface will be more familiar. It is probably lucky for Maria that she has already played here and Kim has not.

Wow is it just me or has Maria's fans doubled or even tripled in the last two months??! :) We're on the 6th page now and I'm seeing so many fairly new posters in here! Nice to see everyone here but I'm kinda shocked about how much support she's getting. It used be we could only fill two pages or so with good luck greetings before a tournament started. Gotta say I miss those times but I also love that she's getting the support and recognition she deserves. :)

Anyway, Good Luck Masha!!! You can do it! Serve and return well. Punish those second serves of Lena's. :)

Good win for Masha, despite the fact that her serve was way off in the 2nd set. She only got about 30% first serves in in that set!

I think both players were nervous, with it being the first match at the YEC, and Elena being the last player to have defeated Masha. Maria came through though, and knows she needs to improve for subsequent rounds.

Today's match was far better than the match against Dementieva, Maria didn't make so many errors and her shots were more confident. It's was a good match.
But there was too much hesitation at the net, she didn't know whether to play a

She lost you $ only if you were betting that she would win by losing less games, like 6:2 6:2.

Pova doesn't know how to tank a match! Last year against Nadia, Pova could barely lift her arm due to the rib/pec/shoulder problem.

Did anyone catch in the interview after the match with Kim that Pova was NOT happy? To me she seemed very upset that she did not succeed in closing out the match on her first service game, when Kim broke her. She complained about not having learned the lesson from the Elena match.

Well, I watched it last night after work. Masha was really in a class by herself, and Kim did not play poorly. The only blemish was getting broken in the 9th game of the 2nd set, otherwise her serve was spot on.

One of Kim's splits made me cringe though--looked very painful. I'm still amazed she can do that.

How many bad line calls were there in that match?! I lost count after six or seven.

At this point, I'm inclined to say that the only one who can beat Maria at this point is Maria.

Nov 9th, 2006, 11:52 PM
Maria is in the same position she was in the last 2 YEC will she do the same as last year or will she play with all guns blazing, we will see.

No, she is not!

Two years ago, the 3rd match meant the difference between the 1st and the 2nd place in the group
More exactly, winning it meant meeting Serena in the semifinal, losing - meeting Myskina (most likely) or Lindsay (a long shot)
That was the information already available when Masha was playing

Last year the 3rd match meant nothing at all, even losing it Masha was already the winner of the group

This year Masha may not advance to the semis AT ALL if she loses to Kuznetsova in two sets and winning herself less than 4 games, or something like that.

I'm not sure what rules are exactly, but I think that if all three have the same situation with sets, they count all games - with Dementieva too.
If Maria loses 2:6 2:6 then her numbers will be the same as Kuznetsova's
then, I'm not sure, Kuznetsova will have more games won, Masha - less lost.
But if Masha loses 2:6 3:6 - it should be enough for her to advance.

Am I right?

(I am assuming that Kim will beat Dementieva in 2 sets, of course. If not, Masha is in the semis)

markspot
Nov 9th, 2006, 11:59 PM
And of course, if Masha wants #1, she should put all on the card and try to meet Justine in the semis.
I'm not sure, has Justine already won the group?
Anyway, when Masha will be playing tomorrow, the other group will be finished, she will know whether to win or lose to capture Justine in the semifinal.
It is unfair if for winning the 3rd match she will be punished by taking #1 away from her, but by losing she can become #1. Stupid system.

She criticized herself rather than complained.
And it still may cost her dearly
6:4 instead of 6:2 may mean the difference between advancing to the semis or not.
Because if Kim wins tomorrow in two sets and Masha loses in two sets,
they will have to count games. Those two games would have come very handy. Good thing that Kuznetsova lost today 1:6 1:6,
that gives some room to advance even losing it two sets

if she loses to Justine, what's the difference, in the final or in the semifinal?
Less points to defend next year

Besides, this is not just any tournament, it is wta championships.
So perhaps even more important than the year ending #1,
but again, if you want to become the champion, you need to beat everybody.
The goal is not to go as far as possible, the goal is to win the whole thing.

So now Maria already won the red group, she won the 1st set.
And, it seems that Eurosport commentators agree with my calculations,
she needed 5 games to qualify for sure.

Maria went sleeping again in the second set, good thing she could afford it in this match.

Now she herself can stop Henin-Hardenne from making the finals :)

And also a big well done on winning all 3 of her matches here in the round robin :yeah:

Something else, has anybody noticed the behaviour of Andy_HK in the livescore threads. Well don't mind his bad rep badrep back and I gave him a PM with a warning. Though I think it's time the moderators should do something. Whatever I can handle him myself.
just keep posting. u may reach 100000 posts in 1 day Also, leave my favourites alone At least they work hard! not like ur big girls to be on the top because of their physical advantages U BRAINLESS MORON! What an insult to the players who won Tier 1's and qualified for the masters.

That was a good match of Maria, really solid performance. She has a great chance to win with Justine, the key will be the serve and her game at the net ;)

Another masterful performance by Maria today! She just keeps getting stronger. I still don't understand, though, why JHH will automatically win the #1 Ranking if she makes it to the finals, while Maria has to win the finals to get the #1 - not that I doubt she can do it. I guess it just makes it more exciting but it sounds like a stupid rule to me.

Because Maria made it to the semis last year, so she has to defend her SF points(which she has). So from this point Maria starts gaining points. JHH didn't play in this last year, so she is gaining points no matter what.

Justine sounds so confident about tomorrow's match. She said whenever she has her goals set, she always attains them! Well, if she thinks the match will depend on her will alone then she can't be more wrong! Cmon my Angel, teach that arrogant Belgian a painful lesson! Prove to her that she cannot just want to win the match and you will roll over for her! Prove to her why you deserve the #1 ranking! Teach her not to speak like this again! Destroy her pride! Make her swallow her words in agony! I am expecting nothing less than a Masha win tomorrow!

May the Siberian Angel be victorious! :armed:

Maria, it's all in your hands now! Time to bring out the big guns! :armed:

We all believe in you so Good Luck and please do everything that you can to win the semifinal and beat Justine! :D

It's so important that she serves well today and takes advantage of every chance she gets. Against Sveta, she again made it a teeny bit harder than it should have been when she failed to hold for 3-0 in the second. But we all know Maria will raise her level. Just hope she'll be mentally strong all throughout. Let's go Masha!

I hate Versus! Why couldn't they show the semi and final live????!!!! :fiery: :smash: :(...

It would be 8 am here. Not too early. They can just replay again for the people in the West Coast. Ugh!!! Now I'm so torn...I don't know if I should follow live scores or just stay away from this site all day until after I have finished watching the match which would be aired 9 hours after it's start. Stupid people! :o

But I don't think I can stay away for that long. Not when everyone on here will know about the result maybe 1,2 or 3 hours after the start of the match...I guees live scores it is. *sigh*...As long as Masha wins...;)

Maria...good luck, my Siberian tigress :bounce:

Less than 30 mins now :scared: But I do believe in her chances although JHH will do her very best to get a revenge. Just get that serves going Masha.

I do believe that if she can win over Justine, she already has one hand on the trophy because JHH is her toughest opponent in this championship...Amelie and Kim are just not up to it imo.

Gosh, I'm a nervous wreck...going to be sick right now :awww: . Come on Masha...only you can make me feel better.

COME ON!!! MASHA BOLEH

Masha lost 62 76 but she fought so hard in the second and fought off break points and came back after being down more than once and Im so proud of the way she fought today. Its been a fantastic year and one she can be so rpoud of especially with the injury problems she has had. she must be relieved in a way its finally vacation time.

Maria couldn't find her game throughout the whole match. Her serve was poor and the second serve was too slow and bad-placed to threaten JHH. JHH mixed up her shots and Maria didn't know how to answer them, especially on the sliced balls.

JHH smiled after one of Maria's UEs... I won't mention the allez things  That makes me hate her even more
