Pierce career on the line after fall
http://www.abs-cbnnews.com/storypage.aspx?StoryId=54462

LINZ, Austria (AFP) - The career of top French tennis player Mary Pierce is on the line as she faces knee surgery following a heavy fall at the WTA Linz tournament.

The 31-year-old former Australian and French Open champion fell heavily after her left knee gave way while playing Russia's Vera Zvonareva in a second round match on Thursday.

World number 29 Pierce was leading 6-4, 6-6 and had had three match points in the previous game before collapsing in the tiebreak. She cried out in pain and was shortly afterwards taken off court on a stretcher.

A spokeswoman for Linz General Hospital confirmed Pierce had come to the hospital around midnight to undergo exams, including X-rays.

Doctors found she had torn the front cruciate ligament on her left knee and recommended she be operated on but she has since left the hospital, perhaps to have surgery in France.

French radio stations were speculating on the possible end of Pierce's career early Friday.

I was hoping for a sprain or badly sprain. Torn liagaments is worst possible news. I feel really bad for Pierce and all Pierce fans cause this is obviously devestating news. I think she's done. I hope she makes a full recovery and is healthy and happy. Whether or not she plays tennis again is COMPLETELY secondary. I only watched that video once and that scream is so hard to get out of my mind. I am not a Pierce fan, but that scream brings tears to my eyes. I don't want to see anyone endure the kind of pain that Pierce was forced to endure ever.

i am sorry to say torn ligament may probably spells the end of her career at her age now... i like her since the young days... hate to see her retire... but torn ligament is a really serious injuries which has to take more than a 2 yrs(she is a professional tennis player) to fully recover having going though lots of therapy...

I had a completely blown ACL when I was 43 and was told the recovery time was two years. I had replacement surgery in early September and, with my surgeon's blessing, I was skiing in February. I worked very hard and was in good shape to begin with. If Mary has the desire to play tennis again, she can and will!
Best wishes to Mary and my condolences to her fans.

Oh no.
Poor Mary. She must be devestated. This could easily be the end. Hopefully the surgery goes well and whether or not she can return to the court hopefully her knee can be repaired enough so that she can do everyday things in the future without pain.

Even though, for some reason, I think that if anyone has the faith to soldier through something this severe, it's Mary.

Stay strong Mah-ree!

Mary is such a strong women and such a strong believer in God.
If she thinks she can go through another comeback, she will and she'll come back stronger than ever.
I know her fans will be there for her if that is the case.

I don't think Mary will leave the tour on the injury but I think it's time that her & Lindsay come together and get their Gold Exempt Emeritus Status.
I don't think it's a stretch for her to get it, she does have 3 slam wins, two in singles and one in mixed doubles.

This isn't the end of Mary.

Doctors found she had torn the front cruciate ligament on her left knee and recommended she be operated on but she has since left the hospital, perhaps to have surgery in France.

French radio stations were speculating on the possible end of Pierce's career early Friday.

The cruciate is a reconstruction isn't it and that's 6 to 10 months out if it is. Bugger I'm not a big fan of Mary's but I hope she does get to play again as no player deserves to have their career ended by an injury. Get well soon Mary.

According to the commentators @ Eurosport. Austria is one of the best place to deal with knee injury because of all the ski-related knee injury right? But I think the French is almost no less well-equipped in these kind of injury because they are also a skiing country. But Mary! PLEASE GET SURGERY ASAP!

If its a torn ACL its hard to see her making it back to the tour. In American football it typically takes about 9 months to come back from ACL injuries and well over a year to be playing again at full strength if you ever can.

At Mary's age it is unlikely that she would ever make it back to her best form.

I hope she can attempt a comeback though. Even if not at her best I'd rather see her end her career with a handshake at net after losing a match or after winning the title at her final tournament.
