I was just wondering if anyone here ever have had the opportunity and pleasure to meet Makiri in person whether it's at the practice courts, after a match, at a restaurant, autograph session, etc. She seems to have a very nice personality and is easily approachable. Please share your experiences...:)

I can't say that I've met her in person, but I doubt that she is easily approachable although I base this on a single experience.
After the victory in the doubles semi-finale at the Ordina Open with Ana Ivanovic against Dementieva/Pennetta, people came towards their seats asking for autographs. While Ana was happy to oblige the fans, Maria stayed in her chair with her back towards the crowd in spite of them calling her name. Only after Ana was done signing autographs and came towards her, she stood up and left for the exit, while in the meantime complete ignoring the fans.
There were also some people waiting at the exit of the court, and maybe she gave them some autographs. I can't tell because by that time I already left and was very distracted by Lena D almost bumping into me. And believe me, when you come suddenly face to face with Lena at less than half a meter distance, that IS very distracting...
But I must admit that I was a little disappointed with Maria's behavior at that time...

I can agree with her kinda being slightly stand offish... I think she just gets shy though....

I met her at the practice courts in Sydney this year and the was probably about 6/7 people there wanted an autograph, when she finished the practice she went down the line and signed all the stuff without saying a word to anyone or even looking at them... Mind you I was quite annoyed with my fellow Australians seeing I was the only one to say thank u to her as well which I think she didn't pay much attention too... In her credit she did get her photo taken with a fan but when they asked for it she just simplier stood behind them and didn't say a word at all... It kinda pissed me off a bit at the time coz Ana was at a court across from her, smiling and giggling and get all these photos and autographs with the fans and that was about an hour before her match with Amelie but she still managed to be relaxed and friendly with everyone (I was too shy to go over to Ana  ) & Maria was coming across as a snob... But like I said I think she is pretty shy...
She looked adorable though so that made up for it! ;)

I think Maria is a little shy maybe and not too confident talking to people in English. At the AO this year she signed many autographs at practice sessions and after Doubles matches. People asked her for towells etc as well and she gave them out. Since we saw her a few times I think she began to recognise us and then was a bit more talkative. It was pretty cool to be able wish her happy birthday in person...she was pretty happy that we knew, no-one else there did  :awww:

 Hopefully Makiri will open up and be more receptible towards her fans when 2007 comes around. She should take a page out of Ana's book on how to be more appreciative and receptive towards her fans. Hopefully, the reason IS because she's just shy. Signing autographs without making eye contact or saying anything can be a sign of this. Katie, I hope you do get the chance to give her that necklace. What a great idea! Awwwwwww! So sweet of you!:D Hopefully, it will make Makiri smile and warm up to her fans. Plus, give her the confidence like you described!:) When you see her, tell Makiri to smile more often will you???;) Does anybody else have any stories to share with us??? I'm sort of surprised that there are so few posted so far.

At the Ordina open last year after she won the doubles 1st round i believe there where about 25 people who wanted there autograph or take a picture with here and she signed them all and let people take pictures with here. She didn't say much. Maybe she is a little shy like some others here said.

Well I had a pretty good experience with her.. I'm a ballboy at Nasdaq-100 Open.. I was at her practice in the morning before her match that day against Maria Sharapova.. There was only me, my friend and this other lady.. Maria Kirilenko was practicing with James Blakes brother.. When she finished practice I asked her if she wanted to take a pic with me.. I actually forgot what she said but I know that I posed to take a pic with her after that lol.. After that I said thank you and she left with her coach.. Heres a link of the pic.. Notice that shes smiling.. She is talented and at the same time drop-dead gorgeous.. take care everybody..:)

Hey lollipop, don't give Masha the tiger eye gemstone! She doesn't need it considering she's been winning alot of tourneys lately.;) Give it Makiri instead. I think she needs it more than Masha.:D

Well, I've been fortunate enough to meet Maria on several occasions and have several talks with her. I first met her during the 2002 US Open juniors tournament which she won. Then in 2003, I got to talk with her a lot at the GHI Bronx Classic challenger. I talked to her after her matches every day of the tournament and she made it to the final. She didn't speak English very well at the time but still took the time to talk. I talked to her at the US Open in 2003 as well and each US Open since. Maria recognizes me now and always greets me with a smile and a hello. She has acknowledged me and my friend during matches at the Open for cheering for her. I gave her a gift at the 2005 US Open and she was very appreciative. Maria is a little shy at times but signs autographs all the time (well except when she loses and I can't say that I blame her). She is a very kind person who I think is sometimes overwhelmed that people want her autograph. Sometimes she gets put off when people get pushy. I find her a kind and giving person whom I love to death and would defend to anybody

Thanks for sharing your experiences House.:) I was wondering when you were going to post your stories about Makiri. It's great you were able to give her your gift. I'm getting the impression that she's a very private person who doesn't want her personal life get out into the open public. I guess if you're as shy as she is you would be too.;) I wonder if you could just tell her what she needs to do to turn her tennis career around in the right direction. You have posted many informitive threads about her struggles what she needs to do. I wonder if she ever reads our posts or even knows that these blogs even exist??? Maybe ask next time you see here ayt the USO.;)

Well there are a lot of things Maria needs to do to get her career turned around. First thing she needs to do is to clear her mind completely. After the French Open, the season was a complete disaster and the constant losing clearly took a toll on Maria mentally. She has to start thinking positive again.
Second, she needs to work on her serve. Her serve has always been the weakest part of her game. Her first serve can be big at times but she can't get it in consistently. She really needs to get her 1st serve because her 2nd serve isn't good. Thirdly, Maria needs to be more agressive and use more of a variety of shots. She is most successful when she serves and vollies, returns and vollies, uses her slice backhand and comes to net. She isn't powerful enough to stay at the baseline and rally with most players. Maria has to be the aggressor. Finally and maybe most importantly, Maria needs to take charge of her career. She needs to tell daddy to back off. Her downward slide started when daddy took over coaching her. We all see how that turned out. Maria will be 20 in January. She is old enough to be on her own. She can't let her dad destroy her career.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe Makiri's doubles partner was Ana Ivanovic. I'm surprised you didn't remember her because she's one of the hottest new players to come around! If they had defeated Navratilova/Sprem that day, we could have seen Makiri & Ivanovic on the USA Network, but I guess it was never meant to be. At least I saw Ana play Serena in the singles match.;)

the true is that i was too nervous too see who was playing with because when i was entering to the granstand the fpur players were getting mad because Makiri was starting to serve so like 50 people wants to get in so the game was stopped many times and Navratilovas get mad and was talking with the chair umpire so i just stay there like 20 min.

Youíre a very lucky man houseoflords! :)

I saw her play three times at the Aussie Open this year and she came across as a very shy girl. After the 1st Round singles match she signed plenty of autographs, including one for me, but she didnít say a word. She just seems to be very shy and a private person.

Well Makiri had to be difficult and pull out & not come to Sydney :ras: :p
I gave Tatiana hers personally and I also gave her Sharapova's (her reaction was funny when I asked if she spoke to her  )
I was waiting for Daniela to finish practice so I could give her's to her & also give her Ana's & MK's (which she could give to Ana to give to MK :p) but I had to leave to catch my train :awww: So a good friend of mine of wtaworld was with me and said he would try to get them to Ana or Dani the next day... I eventually got all 3 of them to Ana so its now up to her to give MK's hers ;)
I forgot to take a picture of the necklaces before I went  but yeah MK's is a dull blueish colour thing :p
I hadn't mentioned Tati's before but she got a clear one for health and thought it was great

The past few years I've gone to Miami and in 2005 I watched Maria beat Anna Chakvetadze 7-5 6-3 in the first round and after I got her autograph. :)

She was really nice, but I think she was shy because this was when she first started to become popular.

My first experience to meet her is at Hansol Korea Open, in 2006.
I worked for a translator for the players...
Her result in that tournament is bad, so, while she stayed in Korea, her feeling might not be that good.
She was kind at her fan meeting session but, not that kind to the staff...
We(staff) took a picture with her, so I have one, but I don't have web based hard disk so, I cannot upload it, hehe

I saw her last year at Eastbourne and got her autograph. She came across as a very nice girl but also extremely shy and self-effacing. She smiled and said "Thank you very much" though when I wished her luck for the rest of the tournament (she was still in doubles) and was very happy to pose for a picture with my friend. I'd always kept an eye on her results but became an instant fan there and then :)

I'm so glad to have seen her play live. I also got her to autograph a picture that a printed out of her (man are those little kids vicious when scavenging for player's autograph)

In the picture you can even see just below her right elbow/forearm and indentation in the photo, that's her fingernail and finger print. :)
