I've been playing tennis since I was 15 (I'm 20 now) and I'd say that this year was the most I've ever played. As of recently, I've been getting this pain in my right wrist. It's not debilitating or anything, but it hurts when I serve and hit some backhands. It's not that bad, but I noticeably wince after serving sometimes. I think it's because I've played tennis so much and I've changed my service motion. I guess I just wanted to know if you can hurt your wrist from the way you serve --- and if there's any quick remedy besides not playing. I was thinking about taping it up...but I'm not sure if it's something I can fix with a new grip or something. :confused:

Please help.

Are you using a "western" or "extreme western" grip? When I first began to play I used to have this problem, but I have since then changed my grip to an eastern grip.

I use a semi-western grip and have this problem sometimes if I play very frequently. My college team had a match last Saturday and my wrist was killing me afterward, but I haven't played since then and the pain is gone now. So... I dunno. I think trying a less extreme grip is the best thing to do.

I had a pain like that during my high school season. It only hurt after hitting multiple forehands. I taped it and it was fine. All I did was take motrin, ice the wrist, and tape it during match play and everything healed up.

Avoid muscling the ball, that can cause all kinds of injuries. I had a pain in my elbow for a little while because I was being lazy and arming my serve instead of pushing off with my legs. No matter what though, playing tennis regularly you'll always have some nagging injury...comes with the game.

i think it is western...i'm not really sure about grips.

i mean, i hit with heavy topspin on my forehand and i have a pretty flat backhand. doesnt that constitute a western grip? but it only REALLY hurts when i serve, which makes me think it's the way i serve.

and thanks for the advice about the motrin and the tape. i guess i'll have to do that.

ah. this may be it. my serve is all arm. and it's pretty fast because i muscle it, i suppose. i can't really use my legs to serve because i can't get the timing right. i guess this is something i'll have to practice.

I always ice and tape my wrist after playing tennis (and other things but thats a different story altogether!!!lol). I find it helps in relieving any pain and also enables me to recover more quickly.

Its probably tendonitis because you've been playing more this year, but you should go to your physician to make sure it isn't something more ominous.

#1. 2x Sprained Ankles [both on left ankle]
#2. Tendonitis - Achilles
#3. Tendonitis - Left Wrist [forehand]
#4. Tendonitis - Left Elbow [classic tennis elbow]
#5. Lower Back Sprain - now chronic :mad:

Ouch.
I have tendonitis of the left bicep right now. It started in August, I noticed it on my service toss and my backhand, which became useless. I thought it was just a strain. I finally went to the doctor in September and I have been treating it for a month now. I'm trying to work with it so it's taking a longer time to heal. It's been a month since I started treatment, it's getting better. Slowly. Luckily for me it's too cold to play now, so it's okay. I'll be better by spring.

I do occasionally have wrist problems, I don't think it was ever tendonitis though. I would just layoff playing for a couple of days and ice the crap out of them. My wrist problems usually flair up in the spring time (April/May) for some reason.

And we're not even going to discuss my ankles. :tape:

i have a bad left knee. i think it's because i use my left knee too much while serving. too much bend maybe. i dont know. plus, i've become ultra defensive these days and running all over the place isn't helping.

isn't tendonitis debilitating? mine isn't debilitating, but maybe i will get it checked out. i only feel pain when i rotate my wrist and as of now, the pain isn't bad at all. i hate going to the doctor...so if i can avoid it, i will :scared:

I've been playing for >7 years and been with my semi-western for a long time. I don't have any problem with my wrist. However, as stated above, do not muscle the ball. As one of the instructors in my local club say use the arm and feel your body rotate on its axle (meaning our spine). Don't try to generate power from just the arm. Also focus on the movement because sometimes awkward shots (meaning out of position), means you have to use your wrist a little more to get the ball back. Although the snapping wrist action on the serve is important, you must be careful as players tends to hurt their wrist during this motion.

I had pain in my right wrist for a while every time I hit the ball, but then I taped it and it still hurt a bit, but after I warmed up the pain is gone and now I feel no pain at all anymore.
