The tournaments generally held in USA (Charleston)

Don't know the difference with "European" clay though.....

I thought it meant the clay was green, so that's why I was a bit confused, as I've never seen a green clay court before

Green clay courts are normally made of Har-Tru, and are faster than red clay courts (which are generally made of crushed brick mixed with other materials).

lenaD is pretty close to winning a title on every surface, i can definatley see her winning a red clay tournie sometime in her career and i think she is gonna win S'hertogenbosc in one of the next few years, plus WD Vee you beat Serena on this one :p

red clay is made using crushed red bricks and green clay is made with crushed stone and other materials. green clay is slightly faster but more 'slippery'. (i think).

It's very slippery as well. Even Justine will fall on it from time to time.
I think that's one of the reasons Kim and Maria haven't played on it.
It also changes from day to day as the weather changes more than any other surface.
The bounces can be erratic. The bounces are lower on an average than on red clay or rebound ace.
The surface can play as fast as an indoor hard court and as slow as a dry red clay court depending on the weather.

It would be interesting to add in the 7th surface, Rebound Ace

You could add Davenport, Pierce, Venus, Serena, Hingis, Momo, JHH

out of my head i know for sure that zvonareva has HO, HI, RC, GR victories, she's a finalist at philly - so she too is only lacking the green clay.
schiavone lost these: indoors, hard, green, outdoors but no grass or clay, suprisingly.
shocked that safina has only 3/6 :o i remembered more finals i guess. very close as well. wait - antwerp is carpet? she had quite alot of indoor finals, hasselt too?
kuzzy has outdoors, grass, red clay
sharapova has outdoor, indoor carpet, grass, indoor hard but lacks the clays.
safarova is grass, clay, hard
patty has alot - let's see: indoors in zurich, green final in charleston, red in rome, linz/vienna, hobart hard - so she's 5/6 missing grass.

I'm pretty sure that har-tru courts could never play nearly as fast as an indoor hard court...I have one of these courts at home

does it really make any sense to divide the surfaces into 6 rather than 3?
With three there are definite undisputable differences.
are we not over doing it with splitting hard court into 3?

do you really want me to start rambling why Rome is so much better clay for momo and that's why she never won her home slam?
because every tourny is different. every court is different.
the reason we talk about the differences between sttugart and the old venue (filderstandt) is because they are that significant.
it's very sensible to be accurate and exact, and it's what makes some players do better than others.
and as someone suggested - it might be more precise to add in rebound ace as another distinc relative.

I don't think she will play those green clay tournaments anytime soon, too dangerous a surface and right after two big tournaments. But I'd love to see her make it on red clay.

Rebound Ace is missing because both Myskina and Dementieva are not impressive on these sufaces.

There is lie. Than there is terrible lie. And after that there is statistic.

Now I see, I was wondering why there was a category for green clay even though there are only two tournaments while rebound ace was grouped under OH when there is a slam played on it:rolleyes:

i think people are taking this a little too seriously.

anyway, francesca schiavone might become the first person to be a runner up on each surface and never a winner

i think she has 4 already :tape:

Just look at WTA Tour Calendar and you will see:

Abbreviations/Symbols:
HO - Hard Court Outdoors
GCO - Green Clay Outdoors
RCO - Red Clay Outdoors
GO - Grass Court Outdoors
HI - Hardcourt Indoors
SI - Supreme Indoors
CI - Carpet Indoors
GSI - Greenset Indoors

Supreme, carpet, greenset basically mean the same surface - carpet.
And there is not a word about Rebound Ace or something else. So I did not pull these surfaces out of my head.
And even if we leave only 4 surfaces (hard, clay, grass and indoors) it won’t change a thing. It will leave us with the same players plus Clijsters ‘cos Sharapova never played clay final, Kuznetsova never played final indoors etc.

So go get a life, whiners...

Don't wet the courts for a couple of days during a dry patch.
It will play fast and a good slice will stay lower than you would expect.
