What an anti-climax of a match. :( I was looking forward to this one, but it didn't even take an hour. :o
Credit to Nadia - she didn't let Shahar into the match, and played stunning tennis.

Nadia is just too good for Shahar I guess.
Not the greatest result to end the year for Shahar probably, but I forgive her because she just gave me an amazing year as her fan :hearts: :worship:

Well done Nadia :)

Just a fantastic performance by Nadya!  Absolutely stunning tennis throughout the whole match! So powerful and, at the same time, accurate play. Poor Shahar:lol: She tried her best, but could do NOTHING . I’m sure, today Petrova would beat anyone. Finally, we could see the REAL Nadya!:rocker2::rocker: Congrats once again girl, with such a great performance!:yeah:

:help:  :haha: What are you talking about? She won five titles this year, beating Henin and Mauresmo in the finals! She's a really GREAT, really solid player. And as I said, when she’s on, she definitely can beat any other player on tour.

I expected her to win but not so quickly, seemed like a nice easy start. I was quite suprised how easy it was cos Peer normally plays better than that.
Suppose everyone has their off days.

Good luck in the next round Nadia :D

When Nadia is on, she is awesome. Winner of two Tier 1's this year. If she
stays on form, she may surprise a few people at YEC in Madrid..

Petrova usually sticks close to the textbook, and when it works, it sure is impressive. A tennis lesson: "see kiddies, this is how you completely overpower a fast, tenacious opponent from the baseline; and be sure to write down the correct moments to rush the net, those being when I chose to do so on this match".

Peer's three previous indoors tournaments all ended with frustrating losses in which she played her heart out and fought to the last but still came short of beating the top ten players she was facing. It's unsurprising then that she seemed a bit deflated and didn't put that much effort once she realized that Petrova was filled with confidence and doing everything right. But overall, Peer isn't as impressive on faster surfaces as she is in clay, is 100% one-dimensional, and must have noticed by now that, against elite opposition not having an off day, running from side to side hitting quite (but not very) hard and quite (but not very) deep just doesn't cut it.

I saw several matches of Shahar this year and I disagree about being one-dimensional. Just watch the match against Nastya and Stosur and
tell me she is one-dimensional. She played so different
at times during the match.

True, Her forehands doesn't match with the Elite because she
misses them too much (and just not as good right now),
but she is still improving and working on it.
in the meanwhile she goes for 'quite' deep and hard shots.

Shahar, it was a good sign that the year needed to end.
amazing year overall :)
Start strong in 2007. :bounce: :D

Congrats Nadia. :)

After this result from Nadia..I`m afraid the biggest contenders for YEC title are Pova and Nadia.ONe of them is very likely to win it(IMO).I hope the tennis game will be once again unpredictable and Lena will win it;)

A good game for Nadia. :worship:

It seems like Shahar didn't believe at all she can win. It was really unlike her. I hope it was just a bad day...

It was a great year for Shahar. Now it's time to come back home to Israel, eat some Humus and Falafel, drink some orange juice and get ready for next year.

LINZ, Austria -- A year ago, Nadia Petrova came into Linz as the only player in the Top 10 never to have won a Sony Ericsson WTA Tour singles title. Now, she comes in as one of the most winningest women of the year. The in-form Russian began her Linz defense, and her quest for a sixth trophy of the year, with a 61 61 victory over one of the most dangerous unseeded threats in the draw, Shahar Peer. Nicole Vaidisova also won.

Petrova, seeded No.2 at the Tier II event, dominated the Israeli teen in just about every department, winning three quarters of the points on her serve, and nearly two thirds of those on the return. She never even faced a break point, and out-aced her big-hitting opponent, 7-1. The Russian just ran away with the victory against a young player that has given the Top 10 fits this season, closing it out in just 52 minutes.

"Before I came on court, I thought it was going to be tough; I decided to keep it as short as I could by trying to put pressure on her," Petrova said afterwards. "In the middle of the second set she changed her tactic with loopy balls to break the rhythm, but that was just perfect -- I took them and gave those heavy balls back. I pushed her and attacked the forehand and she started to miss from that side.

"When she shook my hand, she told me she didn't expect me to play that well."

Only Justine Henin-Hardenne has won as many titles this year as Petrova, who has taken in trophies at Doha, Amelia Island, Charleston, Berlin and Stuttgart. Coming into this event a year ago, she was the only one of the game's 10 best sans-title; but she finally got on the board at the end of the week, after a three set championship win over Patty Schnyder.

The Russian says this surface is tailored to her aggressive game.

"I don't feel I did anything spectacular; I just tried to play clean tennis, take the opportunities, keep points short and come in from time to time. This surface suits my game. You can press somebody here by coming up to the net and hitting the heavy shots I have, and my service is also very effective here."

Petrova's was the first of two second round matches on Wednesday's schedule. Vaidisova, the No.4 seed, played hers later in the day, surviving a tight opening set but demolishing unseeded Mara Santangelo in the second for a 76(4) 60 win.
